Book Teaching and Learning in Nursing

Download or read book Teaching and Learning in Nursing written by Gregor Stiglic and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant body of knowledge is the basis for a holistic, caring and scientific evidence-based nursing education in practice for professional development. Quality teaching leads to good learning and both aspects are two of the main issues of quality assurance in nursing education today. To begin with, not all nursing students have the same levels of motivation or learning abilities. It is with cognisance of providing quality care for patients that the role of the nurse educator has to be to enhance nursing students' learning using scientific evidence based teaching. Research around teaching and learning processes is an important part of the delivery of quality education, which in turn impacts on students' learning results and experiences, thereby, ensuring holistic biopsychosocial care to patients. The main aim of teaching and learning in nursing, at all levels, is to enhance the nurses' contribution to assist the individuals, families and communities in promoting and preserving health, well-being and to efficiently respond to illnesses. We hope that this book can be used as a resource to increase the body of knowledge in teaching and learning in nursing, thereby enhancing the role and contribution of health care professionals to clinical practice.

Book A Comparison of Instructor Audio video with Text based Feedback Versus Text based Feedback Alone on Students Perceptions of Community of Inquiry Among RN to BSN Online Students

Download or read book A Comparison of Instructor Audio video with Text based Feedback Versus Text based Feedback Alone on Students Perceptions of Community of Inquiry Among RN to BSN Online Students written by Marie Kelly Lindley and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to meet the healthcare needs of the US population, Registered Nurses (RNs), with Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees, are needed. This descriptive posttest study, with independent samples, examined the use of audio-video with textbased feedback versus text-based only feedback on student's perceptions of the community of inquiry (COI) among RN-BSN online students (n=125), enrolled in one course at one university. The COI survey performed reliably with Cronbach's alpha .94 on the pretest and .98 on the posttest. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups on the pretest for teaching presence (p=.31), social presence (p=.40) or cognitive presence (p=.38). On the posttest, statistically significant difference between the groups was found for each COI presence: teaching (p=.00, control M=3.84 , intervention M =4.45), social (p=.03, control M= 3.84, intervention M=4.31), and cognitive (p=.00, control M= 3.88, intervention M= 4.46). Students who report higher levels of cognitive presence are more likely to reenroll in subsequent semesters. Nurse educators and students may benefit from the use of AV feedback or other technologies to enhance COI presences in online courses and to promote student reenrollment. Further research is needed to explore student and faculty perceptions of the AV feedback's usefulness and relationship to course outcomes.

Book excerpt: About: To prepare you for real world practice, this book will highlight content areas most relevant to the bedside and why they must be mastered and understood. To help visualize the professional development that is needed as you transition to the responsibilities of the professional nurse, I use the metaphor of building a house; not a static structure, but a unique, vibrant "living" house that is a reflection of how you choose to build and add to it over time. Nursing is a living and vibrant practice that requires your personal involvement and engagement to promote the well-being of those you care for. The components of this "living" home include: Foundation: A house must have a firm and stable foundation. The ethical comportment or the art of nursing is this foundation for every nurse. Caring behaviors, nurse engagement, and professionalism in practice must be present or your nursing practice could be on shaky ground before it even begins! Walls: The applied sciences of nursing: pharmacology, fluid and electrolytes, and anatomy and physiology. I contextualize these sciences to the bedside so the relevance of mastering this content becomes apparent. Roof: Critical thinking and clinical reasoning, which is the thinking that is required by the nurse that completes the house and ties everything together. Skeletons in the closet: Every house has closets and some have a few skeletons in them! Incivility and men in nursing will be explored in detail!

Book Nursing Students Perceptions of Working with Staff Nurses

Download or read book Nursing Students Perceptions of Working with Staff Nurses written by Sharon Holly Jones and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to examine the perceptions of nursing students working with staff nurses during their clinical experiences. Based on this information, a resource for staff nurses was developed to assist them in mentoring students. A limited review of the literature identified helpful and hindering practices in the education of nursing students. Nursing schools and faculty are charged with theoretical and clinical education of nursing students so they may enter into the nursing profession as competent and safe nurses. Staff nurses play integral roles in the formative development of students. Data from a previous study were examined. The variables of friendliness, approachability, availability and willingness of staff nurses were evaluated. Students consistently ranked the ability of nurses to teach lowest and friendliness of nurses highest. Student comments were organized qualitatively utilizing retrospective analysis. Two themes were identified from the qualitative data which added to the veracity of the research. Positive reported nurse behaviors towards students were then utilized as a basis for a mentoring guide. Limitations for this project, as well as implications and topics of future research were identified and discussed. A resource guide was developed for distribution to staff nurses to assist them when mentoring nursing students.
