Book excerpt: Truehart gives us a real inside peak at her work and the devotion and skills of those who work alongside her. But most important, she takes the scary out of hospice. She makes it clear that choosing hospice creates the best possible world for the dying and the people who love themthat terminal illness does not necessitate living every day as though it is your last. Rather hospice can create a world of possibilities for each and every day that is left to usjust like in real life. Kay Degenhardt, KDI When I was first diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma over three years ago, it had the face of my mortality on itI was blessed to come across a copy of Cathys manuscript of her lifes work in hospice [which] made me laugh while I cried, but more importantly, Cathys compassion and her patients courage gave me hope and inspiration when I needed it most. I recommend that anyoneread this! Joan Rose Ellsworth

Book The Nurses

Download or read book The Nurses written by Alexandra Robbins and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller. “A funny, intimate, and often jaw-dropping account of life behind the scenes.”—People Nurses is the compelling story of the year in the life of four nurses, and the drama, unsung heroism, and unique sisterhood of nursing—one of the world’s most important professions (nurses save lives every day), and one of the world’s most dangerous, filled with violence, trauma, and PTSD. In following four nurses, Alexandra Robbins creates sympathetic characters while diving deep into their world of controlled chaos. It’s a world of hazing—“nurses eat their young.” Sex—not exactly like on TV, but surprising just the same. Drug abuse—disproportionately a problem among the best and the brightest, and a constant temptation. And bullying—by peers, by patients, by hospital bureaucrats, and especially by doctors, an epidemic described as lurking in the “shadowy, dark corners of our profession.” The result is a page-turning, shocking look at our health-care system.

  • Pages : 64 pages

Download or read book Daily Miracles written by Alan Briskin and published by Nursing Knowledge International. This book was released on 2006 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do caring and compassion show up in the demanding, often chaotic experience of health care practice? This book, in full-color and supported by magnificent photography, seeks to answer that question and put caring and compassion back at the center of excellent health care in spite of the time-pressured, cost-conscious, high-tech focus of modern health care. Authors Alan Briskin and Jan Boller met with 20 registered nurses for a sustained dialogue at a California community hospital to work toward an answer to this very question. Telling stories and discussing key principles of caring, the group engaged in conversations that revealed the inner landscape of both caring and caretaker. Using principles of appreciative inquiry, reflective practice, generative dialogue, and the power of speaking in circle, the work was an affirmation that when people are ill, they need a team to care for them. Likewise, caregivers need to be part of a group that cares together. Illustrated with original photography by one of the authors, the book has a beauty and spaciousness that is reflective of the book's message and perfect for anyone who wishes to experience relationship-centered care as a lived experience.

Book excerpt: THE PICNICKERS A BLANKET BENEDICTION MIRACLE DOWNS With the Picnickers, South Dakota born author, Floy Timmerman, began what grew to be a trilogy. In a pioneer saga of the Dakota Territory Hesseman family, the reader received an invitation to join the tables of a reunion where relatives merge information, piecing together events that shaped the fabric of their present-day family. The story chronicles Elizabeth, who with her one time circus performer husband Tabor, leaves verdant Iowa and migrate to the newly opened Rosebud reservation land in South Dakota. Readers became so emotionally involved with the eleven young Hessemans that A Blanket Benediction was written to lead one step forward and two steps back to the origin of an Indian blanket that had survived into the next generation. In A Blanket Benediction, Callie, daughter of the youngest Hesseman, Maureen, persists in following the blanket’s trail across Dakota and north into Canada. Clint, whose own ancestry designates him a dubious choice of traveling companion, devotedly supports her in unearthing the root of her mother’s curiosity. Roman, a Canadian Native American, gifts Callie with his endearing enlightenment and Friar Lucas, the last remaining monk in an abandoned monastery, latches onto the young couple’s potential for preserving his own hope and dream. Now Miracle Downs continues as Callie complements Clint in realizing his life-long ambition and tempts us all to fall in love with their challenging – yet gifted – special daughter.

Book Communication in Palliative Nursing

Download or read book Communication in Palliative Nursing written by Elaine Wittenberg and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first edition of Communication in Palliative Nursing was published in 2012 and became the market leader for nurses wanting to learn more about how to improve and teach palliative care communication. For the last 8 years, it has remained the only text solely focused on the vital role of nurses in palliative care. During this time, the COMFORT model was taught to nurses nationwide who brought the curriculum back to their own institutions and taught components of the model to more than 10,000 healthcare providers across the United States (Wittenberg, Ferrell, Goldsmith, Ragan, & Buller, 2017). Numerous journal articles and research studies have been produced to highlight the principle components of the COMFORT model and test its effectiveness among healthcare audiences across a variety of clinical and educational settings. Through this all, as the model was disseminated to clinical audiences of bedside nurses, nurse leaders, nursing students, and interprofessional learners, feedback was captured about COMFORT. Comments revealed major components of the model that were working and weren't working for the nurses and other healthcare providers who utilized the strategies with patients and families, and began using curriculum tools for teaching and integrating palliative care communication instruction. So, much like the model's grounding in a transactional communication approach, which relies on the co-created interaction between parties, it was clear that the COMFORT model was also ebbing and flowing and had to change. More importantly, palliative care has been growing, changing, expanding, and becoming more sophisticated, more wide-spread! Now more than ever before, palliative care is provided in the home, clinic, or inpatient setting and serves patients who are seriously or chronically ill and their families. It became evident that in order to continue improvements to the model and to keep up with the changing landscape of palliative care and palliative patient populations, a new edition was necessary. Before we highlight the changes, it is never too early to overstate our steadfast commitment to the following principles: We believe that communication research and theory can shape palliative care practices, providing tools for a variety of contexts. We believe that palliative care, offering compassionate, holistic treatment for patients and their families, will not be possible without caring for the entire person (body and mind). We believe that communicating about palliative care must begin at diagnosis of serious illness, not just at end-stages. We believe in a patient-centered approach to communication that emphasizes the role of the family caregiver in the illness trajectory. We believe that intentional communication emphasizing team processes among physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other healthcare professionals improves palliative care practice. We believe that palliative care should be introduced early in the communication education of all health professionals. We believe that education about palliative care and communication must extend to patients and families who can then advocate for and partner more productively in such services. We believe that communication with the family caregiver is essential for the treatment of pain and symptom management. We believe that frequent conversations are needed across the disease/care trajectory, as patients and families encounter ongoing points of decision-making"--
