Book excerpt: The delivery of high quality and equitable care for both mothers and newborns is complex and requires efforts across many sectors. The United States spends more on childbirth than any other country in the world, yet outcomes are worse than other high-resource countries, and even worse for Black and Native American women. There are a variety of factors that influence childbirth, including social determinants such as income, educational levels, access to care, financing, transportation, structural racism and geographic variability in birth settings. It is important to reevaluate the United States' approach to maternal and newborn care through the lens of these factors across multiple disciplines. Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access, and Choice reviews and evaluates maternal and newborn care in the United States, the epidemiology of social and clinical risks in pregnancy and childbirth, birth settings research, and access to and choice of birth settings.

Book Evaluation of a Nurse Practitioner Developed Toolkit on Health Care Provider Knowledge of Perinatal Depression

Download or read book Evaluation of a Nurse Practitioner Developed Toolkit on Health Care Provider Knowledge of Perinatal Depression written by Valerie M. Kading and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is a global health burden and a leading cause of disability (WHO, 2012a). Depression during pregnancy has been associated with poor maternal and birth outcomes (Kingston, Tough & Whitfield, 2012; Letourneau et al., 2012; Muzik & Borovska, 2010). Despite the prevalence and consequences of perinatal depression, it is often unrecognized and undertreated by health care providers (HCP) (Breedlove & Fryzelka, 2011). Health care provider education on perinatal depression is needed. The purpose of this scholarly project is to create a web-based resource toolkit for HCPs aimed at evaluating its effectiveness on health care provider knowledge of perinatal depression, including treatment and referral options, and acceptability of the resource toolkit. An online educational toolkit with imbedded pre and postpresentation surveys was collected and disseminated via Nurse Practitioner listserv and by word of mouth. There was no statistical difference between pre and postpresentation surveys. The majority of participants were knowledgeable on how to manage perinatal depression, were currently treating and screening for perinatal depression and indicated high acceptance to the toolkit presentation. While the data did not yield statistical significance, it captures the hallmarks of the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, contributes to the knowledge base for perinatal depression and serves as a study to support the benefit and use of online educational formats. Keywords: perinatal depression, barriers to perinatal care, health care provider knowledge, knowledge gained, web-based education, health care provider toolkit.

Book The Perinatal Nurse s Guide to Avoiding a Lawsuit

Download or read book The Perinatal Nurse s Guide to Avoiding a Lawsuit written by Patricia M. Connors and published by PHC Publishing Group. This book was released on 2009 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Perinatal Nurse's Guide to Avoiding a Lawsuit, Pat Connors shares her 10 years of experience and the expertise she acquired working as a legal nurse consultant and nurse expert. Working with both plaintiff and defense attorneys, combined with 40 years as a perinatal nurse, affords her a unique ability to educate perinatal nurses as to factors that might lead them to become involved in the dreaded LAWSUIT. At one time, physicians were considered the "captain of the ship" and nurses were expected to do little more than take and follow orders. Today's nurses, well educated, autonomous and expected to possess critical thinking skills, now often find themselves responsible for many tasks once assigned to physicians. The complexity of maternal-child nursing has placed higher demands for assessment and vigilance. This book targets those areas that make perinatal nurses vulnerable to and prime targets for a lawsuit. The Perinatal Nurse's Guide to Avoiding a Lawsuit is replete with case studies and resources highlighting areas of litigation for which perinatal nurses are at greatest risk and addresses strategies to reduce those risks.
