Book excerpt: Written specifically for the experienced nurse enrolled in an RN-to-BSN program, this text guides nurses through an interactive critical thinking process to become effective and confident nurse leaders. All nurses involved with direct patient care already rely on similar strategies to oversee patient safety, make care decisions, and integrate plan of care in collaboration with patients and families. This text expands upon that knowledge and provides a firm base to reach the next steps in academia and practice, enabling the BSN-prepared nurse to tackle serious issues in care delivery with a high level of self-awareness and skill. Leadership and Management Competence in Nursing Practice relies on a keen understanding of what experienced nurses already bring to the classroom. This text provides a core framework and useful skills and strategies to successfully lead nursing and healthcare forward. Clear, concise chapters cover leadership skills and personal attributes of leaders with minimal repetition of material covered in associate’s degree programs. Content builds on the framework of AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education, IOM Competencies, and QSEN KSAs. Each chapter presents case scenarios to promote critical thinking and decision-making. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first to describe women medical practitioners other than midwives in the colonial period, emphasizes that medical care was part of every woman's work. The Healer's Calling uses memorable anecdotes, engaging characters, and medical oddities to tell the fascinating story of the practice of household medicine in early America. Rebecca J. Tannenbaum points out that housewives provided much of the medical care available in the seventeenth century. Elite women cared for the indigent in their towns and used medical practice to make influential connections with powerful men; "doctresses" or "doctor women" supported themselves with their practices and competed directly with male physicians; and midwives were crucial "expert witnesses" in cases of fornication, murder, and witchcraft. Yet there were limits to the authority of women's healing communities, with consequences for those who overstepped the bounds. By setting women's practice in the context of contemporary medicine, gender roles, and community norms, Tannenbaum also reveals the relationship between women's medical practice and witchcraft accusations. Tannenbaum examines colonial America's full range of medical options—including the work of classically trained male doctors and male lay practitioners—with a keen eye to the interactions and tensions between men and women in the realm of healing.

Book excerpt: Being a nurse was a life-changing experience for me. I chose a career that gave me a new identity; but more importantly, I learned how to help people. It was a very fulfilling career, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give it a whirl. Many of the nurses and doctors I worked with over the years have passed on to the other side. I would read the news of their passing with great sadness. I remembered their voices, their faces, and the many experiences we had together. It is bittersweet to realize that I will never see them again, never share a workload with them, never hear their voice again. I miss them all and have been blessed by their all-too-brief presence in my life. This has been a most rewarding journey for me, and I sincerely hope you decide to explore a career in the health professions. Best wishes on your success in whatever career you choose.

Book excerpt: Patricia Henderson became a very talented pianist. She was taught by her maternal grandmother who was a concert pianist. Patricia also became rich since her paternal grandfather, who made it big in the Texas oil industry, endowed her with a generous trust when she turned 21. She became despondent after she was in a horrific automobile accident that left her a paraplegic. Then she met Rick. John Richard Ducheyene (pronounced du kane) and called Rick by all who knew him, was born and raised in a Central Texas farming community. He lost his parents at age 15 and was under the guardianship of an uncle who sat Rick up really well financially on his 21st birthday. Rick also took flying lessons his senior year in high school and obtained his pilot's license by the time he graduated. During his college years he studied the stock market and became a successful investor. One of his electives in college was a music appreciation class and he fell in love with classical music. He enjoyed live concerts and stage plays, especially musicals. It was at a classical music concert that he saw Patricia Henderson. Rick and Patricia met in a most unique way. From the time they first met they wanted to see more of each other and began dating. It is interesting how they overcame Patricia's handicap and amazing how they dealt with it. The novel describes their courtship, their ups and downs, and the thrilling sub-plots along the way, leading up to the dramatic climax of the story.
