Book Women in the History of Linguistics

Download or read book Women in the History of Linguistics written by Wendy Ayres-Bennett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the History of Linguistics is a ground-breaking investigation into women's contribution to the description, analysis, and codification of languages across a wide range of different linguistic and cultural traditions. Notably, the volume looks beyond Europe to Africa, Australia, Asia, and North America, offering a systematic and comparative approach to a subject that has not yet received the scholarly attention it deserves. In view of women's often limited educational opportunities in the past, their impact is examined not only within traditional and institutional contexts, but also in more domestic and less public realms. The chapters explore a variety of spheres of activity, including the production of grammars, dictionaries, philological studies, critical editions, and notes and reflections on the nature of language and writing systems, as well as women's contribution to the documentation and maintenance of indigenous languages, language teaching and acquisition methods, language debates, and language use and policy. Attitudes towards women's language-both positive and negative-that regularly shape linguistic description and analysis are explored, alongside metalinguistic texts specifically addressed to them as readers. Women in the History of Linguistics is intended for all scholars and students interested in the history of linguistics, women's studies, social and cultural history, and the intersection between language and gender

Book Romagnol Language and Literature

Download or read book Romagnol Language and Literature written by Douglas Bartlett Gregor and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the personality of a region. The reader will never again move eastwards from Bologna without the sensation of crossing a frontier. Romagnol: Language and Literature This book aims to put Romagnol squarely on the literary map of Europe, and in so doing to suggest that the secret backwaters of dialect contain treasures which deserve to be more widely known. Everyone has heard of Mistral: but who outside Romagna knows the name of Aldo Spallici? Yet his poetry and example entitle him to be called the Mistral of Romagna. He and such poets as Vincenzo Strocchi, Enzo Guerra, and Cino Pedrelli have made of Romagnol a dialect which the reader of poetry will quickly appreciate. After all, it was also the mother-tongue of Pascoli. Not only poets, however, will find Romagnol of interest. The linguist will find a Grammar and the philologist an Etymology. There is something for the student of folklore: and a map will enable the tourist to find the places that have excited his curiosity. This is the personality of a region. The reader will never again move eastwards from Bologna without the sensation of crossing a frontier. D.B. Gregor was a professional teacher of Classics and Romance languages, whose wife was from Romagna. He is also the author of "Friulan: Language and Literature" (9780902675391) and "Romontsch: Language and Literature (9780900891397)." Part of the Oleander Classics series, this title has been reproduced using the highest-quality modern scanning technology. This is done in order to keep important works from the Press's 50-year history from going out of print. In this way, the invaluable resources provided by this and other books in the series remain available for general readers, academics and other interested parties.

Book Towards a New Standard

Download or read book Towards a New Standard written by Massimo Cerruti and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many European languages the National Standard Variety is converging with spoken, informal, and socially marked varieties. In Italian this process is giving rise to a new standard variety called Neo-standard Italian, which partly consists of regional features. This book contributes to current research on standardization in Europe by offering a comprehensive overview of the re-standardization dynamics in Italian. Each chapter investigates a specific dynamic shaping the emergence of Neo-standard Italian and Regional Standard Varieties, such as the acceptance of previously non-standard features, the reception of Old Italian features excluded from the standard variety, the changing standard language ideology, the retention of features from Italo-Romance dialects, the standardization of patterns borrowed from English, and the developmental tendencies of standard Italian in Switzerland. The contributions investigate phonetic/phonological, prosodic, morphosyntactic, and lexical phenomena, addressed by several empirical methodologies and theoretical vantage points. This work is of interest to scholars and students working on language variation and change, especially those focusing on standard languages and standardization dynamics.
