Book excerpt: In the near future, a large fusion experiment will be performed at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow by implosion of a cylindrical metallic linear surrounding a plasma and its confining magnetic field. In this scheme, a megagauss field is created by compressing an initial kilogauss field, the plasma is compressed to densities on the order of 10 to the 19th power/cc. The Lawson time for such dense plasmas is reduced to tens of microseconds. Since the system can be contained on this time scale by the inertia at the liner, breakeven can theoretically be achieved. An important limiting factor here, as in all straight theta pinches, is the amount of energy lost out the ends: The longer the theta pinch, the smaller the losses. The minimum length necessary for breakeven is determined by losses due to electron thermal conduction, plasma flow to the ends (convection) and Bremsstrahlung radiation. The losses can, in theory, be partially or totally compensated for by the heating caused by electron collisions with the 3.5 MeV alpha particle from the D-T reaction. The purpose of the work reported here is to study numerically the scaling of these losses with system size and other parameters when the losses are integrated over the compression cycle.

Book excerpt: HE ninth Scottish Universities' Summer School in Physics, sponsored T jointly by the Scottish Universities and NATO was held at Newbattle Abbey from 28th July to 16th August 1968. This was the first Scottish Summer School to be devoted to plasma physics, the exact title for the School being the Physics of Hot Plasmas. Forty-three students were accepted, fourteen of these being resident in the United Kingdom. In addition there were eleven lecturers and seven other participants. The choice of lecturers, particularly in experimental plasma physics, was limited to some extent by the fact that an international conference on con trolled fusion was held at Novosibirsk during the first week in August. Not withstanding this, it was possible to arrange a programme of lectures reasonably well balanced between theoretical and experimental plasma physics. The topics chosen included kinetic theory, waves and oscillations, instabilities, turbulence, collisionless shocks, computational methods, laser scattering and laser generated plasmas, plasma production and containment. Several semi nars on special topics were given by invited speakers and by students.

Subsequent chapters explore the compression and kink instabilities of reversed field pinches; self-inductance changes in a plasma focus; interactions of high-energy plasma clusters with a longitudinal magnetic field; and electromagnetic implosion of large-diameter liners. The linear theta pinch as a 14-neutron source is also described. This monograph will be a valuable source of information for physicists.
