Book Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow

Download or read book Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow written by Alexander G Kuz'min and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transonic flow occurs around moving objects as they approach and cross the sound barrier. Serious problems can occur at this point, such as shock-induced flow separation which can cause the aircraft to spin out of control. Another important practical problem is the achievement of higher aerodynamic performance of aircraft at cruise conditions, which leads to considerable fuel savings. The success in application of numerical methods for simulation of transonic flow and aircraft design depends on developments in the underlying mathematical theory. This book presents a breakthrough in the solvability analysis of boundary value problems, which makes it possible to establish convergence of finite element approximations for shock-free flow and to provide a framework for putting the existing numerical methods on a more sound basis. Also, physical aspects concerned with patterns of formation and propagation of weak shock waves are analysed. This contributes to the understanding of the extreme sensitivity of transonic flow to perturbation of freestream conditions. The developed theoretical knowledge base yields promising concepts of the airfoil design and active flow control by airfoil/wing shape modifications or suction/blowing through a perforated surface. Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow * Focuses on Computational Fluid Dynamics. * Addresses practical problems, such as airfoil design and flow control. * Presents developments made in the last two decades. In essence this is a much needed monograph for researchers and engineers in applied mathematics and numerical analysis applied to aerodynamics and for algorithm developers in Computational Fluid Dynamics in the aircraft industry. It gives design engineers the underlying mathematical theory necessary for developing new concepts for airfoil/wing design and flow control.

Book Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 In 2 Volumes

Download or read book Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 In 2 Volumes written by Mohamed M Hafez and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-11-20 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of CFD Review was published in 1995. The purpose of this new publication is to present comprehensive surveys and review articles which provide up-to-date information about recent progress in computational fluid dynamics, on a regular basis. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of CFD, it is difficult to cope with all the important developments in related areas. There are at least ten regular international conferences dealing with different aspects of CFD.It is a real challenge to keep up with all these activities and to be aware of essential and fundamental contributions in these areas. It is hoped that CFD Review will help in this regard by covering the state-of-the-art in this field. The present book contains sixty-two articles written by authors from the US, Europe, Japan and China, covering the main aspects of CFD. There are five sections: general topics, numerical methods, flow physics, interdisciplinary applications, parallel computation and flow visualization. The section on numerical methods includes grids, schemes and solvers, while that on flow physics includes incompressible and compressible flows, hypersonics and gas kinetics as well as transition and turbulence. This book should be useful to all researchers in this fast-developing field.

It includes contributions from many distinguished mathematicians and engineers and, as always, the standard of papers is high. The main themes of the book are algorithms and algorithmic needs arising from applications, Navier-Stokes on flexible grids, and environmental computational fluid dynamics. Graduate students of numerical analysis will find the up-to-date coverage of research in this book very useful.

Book Study of Unstructured Finite Volume Methods for the Solution of the Euler Equations

Download or read book Study of Unstructured Finite Volume Methods for the Solution of the Euler Equations written by Ivan Padilla Montero and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work deals with the numerical solution of inviscid compressible flows by means of the Euler equations. It focuses on the description of an unstructured finite volume method for these equations and its numerical application to solve external, two-dimensional steady problems. On first place, the standard formulation of the Euler equations is presented, reviewing the most important properties that characterize their mathematical behavior. The hyperbolic nature of the system is discussed, emphasizing the fundamental importance of taking into account the propagation of information in the flow field in order to obtain physically meaningful solutions, which also leads to a description of how the boundary conditions should be treated to avoid undesirable behaviors. To complete this presentation, a dimensionless form of the equations is derived, which provides substantial advantages to the numerical solution. The attention is then focused on the unstructured finite volume formulation, which is based on a central approximation of the fluxes at the volume interfaces. According to the need of properly accounting for the propagation of characteristic variables, the requirement to add artificial dissipation terms to the central discretization is justified. Then, two classical forms of artificial dissipation are defined, namely, the first-order upwind scheme and the Jameson-Schmidt-Turkel high-order model, detailing how to adapt the formulation of the dissipation terms to an unstructured mesh. Eventually, the time integration of the spatially discretized equations is assessed. With the objective of performing a practical implementation of the theoretical concepts studied, the development of a numerical solver is presented next, briefly describing the program structure and characteristics. After that, five different test cases are solved with the purpose of validating the code, consisting on two transonic flows around a NACA0012 airfoil and three supersonic examples, respectively around a NACA0012 airfoil, a double wedge airfoil and circular cylinder. The results obtained for each case are then analyzed and compared against reference solutions, showing an overall satisfactory performance of the solver developed.

Book Grid Generation and Flow Solution Method for Euler Equations on Unstructured Grids

Download or read book Grid Generation and Flow Solution Method for Euler Equations on Unstructured Grids written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A grid generation and flow solution algorithm for the Euler equations on unstructured grids is presented. The grid generation scheme, which uses Delaunay triangulation, generates the field points for the mesh based on cell aspect ratios and allows clustering of grid points near solid surfaces. The flow solution method is an implicit algorithm in which the linear set of equations arising at each time step is solved using a Gauss-Seidel procedure that is completely vectorizable. Also, a study is conducted to examine the number of subiterations required for good convergence of the overall algorithm. Grid generation results are shown in two dimensions for an NACA 0012 airfoil as well as a two element configuration. Flow solution results are shown for a two dimensional flow over the NACA 0012 airfoil and for a two element configuration in which the solution was obtained through an adaptation procedure and compared with an exact solution. Preliminary three dimensional results also are shown in which the subsonic flow over a business jet is computed. Anderson, W. Book The Upwind Control Volume Scheme for Unstructured Triangular Grids

Download or read book The Upwind Control Volume Scheme for Unstructured Triangular Grids written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new algorithm for the numerical solution of the Euler equations is presented. This algorithm is particularly suited to the use of unstructured triangular meshes, allowing geometric flexibility. Solutions are second-order accurate in the steady state. Implementation of the algorithm requires minimal grid connectivity information, resulting in modest storage requirements, and should enhance the implementation of the scheme on massively parallel computers. A novel form of upwind differencing is developed, and is shown to yield sharp resolution of shocks. Two new artificial viscosity models are introduced that enhance the performance of the new scheme. Numerical results for transonic airfoil flows are presented, which demonstrate the performance of the algorithm. Giles, Michael and Anderson, W. Kyle and Roberts, Thomas W.
