Book excerpt: A thoughtful consideration of the current level of development of multigrid methods, this volume is a carefully edited collection of papers that addresses its topic on several levels. The first three chapters orient the reader who is familiar with standard numerical techniques to multigrid methods, first by discussing multigrid in the context of standard techniques, second by detailing the mechanics of use of the method, and third by applying the basic method to some current problems in fluid dynamics. The fourth chapter provides a unified development, complete with theory, of algebraic multigrid (AMG), which is a linear equation solver based on multigrid principles. The last chapter is an ambitious development of a very general theory of multigrid methods for variationally posed problems. Included as an appendix is the latest edition of the Multigrid Bibliography, an attempted compilation of all existing research publications on multigrid.

Book Parallel Computing in Science and Engineering

Download or read book Parallel Computing in Science and Engineering written by Rüdiger Dierstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-05-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the aim of the conference to present issues in parallel computing to a community of potential engineering/scientific users. An overview of the state-of-the-art in several important research areas is given by leading scientists in their field. The classification question is taken up at various points, ranging from parametric characterizations, communication structure, and memory distribution to control and execution schemes. Central issues in multiprocessing hardware and operation, such as scalability, techniques of overcoming memory latency and synchronization overhead, as well as fault tolerance of communication networks are discussed. The problem of designing and debugging parallel programs in a user-friendly environment is addressed and a number of program transformations for enhancing vectorization and parallelization in a variety of program situations are described. Two different algorithmic techniques for the solution of certain classes of partial differential equations are discussed. The properties of domain-decomposition algorithms and their mapping onto a CRAY-XMP-type architecture are investigated and an overview is given of the merit of various approaches to exploiting the acceleration potential of multigrid methods. Finally, an abstract performance modeling technique for the behavior of applications on parallel and vector architectures is described.

Book Experiments and Numerical Simulations of Diluted Spray Turbulent Combustion

Download or read book Experiments and Numerical Simulations of Diluted Spray Turbulent Combustion written by Bart Merci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the outcome of the 1st International Workshop on Turbulent Spray Combustion held in 2009 in Corsica (France). The focus is on reporting the progress of experimental and numerical techniques in two-phase flows, with emphasis on spray combustion. The motivation for studies in this area is that knowledge of the dominant phenomena and their interactions in such flow systems is essential for the development of predictive models and their use in combustor and gas turbine design. This necessitates the development of accurate experimental methods and numerical modelling techniques. The workshop aimed at providing an opportunity for experts and young researchers to present the state-of-the-art, discuss new developments or techniques and exchange ideas in the areas of experimentations, modelling and simulation of reactive multiphase flows. The first two papers reflect the contents of the invited lectures, given by experts in the field of turbulent spray combustion. The first concerns computational issues, while the second deals with experiments. These lectures initiated very interesting and interactive discussions among the researchers, further pursued in contributed poster presentations. Contributions 3 and 4 focus on some aspects of the impact of the interaction between fuel evaporation and combustion on spray combustion in the context of gas turbines, while the final article deals with the interaction between evaporation and turbulence.

Book Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flow Inside the Cylinder of a New Two stroke Grail Engine Design

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flow Inside the Cylinder of a New Two stroke Grail Engine Design written by Shoeb Ahmed Syed and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a novel way of implementing Autodesk computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software for internal combustion (IC) engine application. The main objective of this research is to develop a high fidelity simulation methodology for a state of art hybrid two-stroke Grail engine and to investigate the complex motion of piston and intake valve of the engine. Grail engine design is unique due to presence of single intake valve within the piston itself. Thus, the intake valve moves with the piston which makes the motion much more complex to study in the present work. Since the efficiency of combustion and the production of pollutants in the internal combustion engine are strongly dependent on the turbulent flow field in the engine cylinder. The focus is put in the analysis of the in-cylinder flow field dynamics and turbulence within the cylinder and through the complete engine cycle in the initial stages of development of the Grail engine. Finally, the scavenging process of the Grail engine with mixing and scavenging efficiency was also numerically investigated. In most engines, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is almost exclusively generated during the intake stroke and enhances greatly the mixing of air and fuel to give better mixing during compression stoke. The 3-D simulation of the flow through the engine is performed by using finite element method. Autodesk Reynold's-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) K ?? model is used to perform the calculations of the flow. The performance and possibilities that Autodesk CFD gives for this kind of application is evaluated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of this work, we have developed a new numerical method for the integration of the unaveraged, time-dependent, high-Reynolds number Navier-Stokes equations governing a reacting flow. This method, which we called the transport element, is a grid free Langrangian field method which has been developed for the simulation of reacting flow, and to describe mechanisms of shear flow-combustion interaction which have been revealed using these methods.
