Book Numerical Simulation of Mechanical Behavior of Composite Materials

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Mechanical Behavior of Composite Materials written by Sergio Oller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original mechanical formulation to treat nonlinear orthotropic behavior of composite materials is presented in this book. It also examines different formulations that allow us to evaluate the behavior of composite materials through the composition of its components, obtaining a new composite material. Also two multiple scale homogenization methods are given, one based on the analytical study of the cells (Ad-hoc homogenization) and other one, more general based on the finite element procedure applied on the macro scale (upper-scale) and in the micro scale (sub-scale). A very general formulation to simulate the mechanical behavior for traditional composite structures (plywood, reinforced concrete, masonry, etc.), as well as the new composite materials reinforced with long and short fibers, nanotubes, etc., are also shown in this work. Typical phenomena occurring in composite materials are also described in this work, including fiber-matrix debonding, local buckling of fibers and its coupling with the overall buckling of the structure. Finally, several numerical examples that evaluates the qualities and capabilities of the general model formulated are offered in this book. This book is intended for graduate engineering students who want to expand their knowledge of composite structures behavior.

Book Simulation of Composite Material Response Under Dynamic Compressive Loading

Download or read book Simulation of Composite Material Response Under Dynamic Compressive Loading written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realistic computer prediction of high-velocity impact and penetration events involving composite materials requires a knowledge of the material behavior under large compressive stresses at high rates of deformation. As an aid to the development of constitutive models for composites under these conditions, methods for numerical simulation of the material response at the microstructural level are being developed. At present, the study is confined to glass fiber/epoxy composites. The technique uses a numerical model of a representative sample of the microstructure with randomly distributed fibers. By subjecting the boundary of this numerical sample to prescribed loading histories, a statistical interpretation allows prediction of the global material response. Because the events at the microstructural scale involve locally large deformation, and because of the constantly changing picture with regard to contact between the fibers, the Eulerian code CTH is used for these calculations. Certain aspects of material failure can also be investigated using this approach. The method allows the mechanical behavior of composite materials to be studied with fewer assumptions about constituent behavior and morphology than typically required in analytical efforts.

Book The Macro Microscopic Numerical Simulation of the Mechanical Behavior of CFCC with Matrix Anisotropic Damage by Homogenization Method

Download or read book The Macro Microscopic Numerical Simulation of the Mechanical Behavior of CFCC with Matrix Anisotropic Damage by Homogenization Method written by D. Luo and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, a damage constitutive model based on a micro-mechanical approach is established and used to predict the macro-microscopic elastic-brittle mechanical behavior of continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CFCC). Anisotropic damage is applied to describe the matrix phase damage which reflects all types of damage such as nucleation and coalescence of voids and micro-cracks that the matrix material undergoes. The asymptotic expansion homogenization method is used to obtain the effective mechanical properties of composites and to derive the homogenized damage elastic concentration factor and the gross stiffness matrix of unidirectional and cross-ply laminate composite materials. Internal variables are introduced to describe the evolution of the damage state and the degradation of the material stiffness. Using the proposed theory, the unidirectional composite and the cross-ply laminate composites with /03/90/03/, /03/902/03/, and /03/903/03/ stacking sequences are analyzed, and the numerical results are consistent with those of the experiments.

Book Mechanical Response of Composites

Download or read book Mechanical Response of Composites written by Pedro P. Camanho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themethodologyfordesigninghigh-performancecompositestructuresisstill evo- ing. The complexity of the response of composite materials and the dif?culties in predicting the composite material properties from the basic properties of the c- stituents result in the need for a well-planned and exhaustive test program. The recommended practice to mitigate the technological risks associated with advanced composite materials is to substantiate the performance and durability of the design in a sequence of steps known as the Building Block Approach. The Building Block Approach ensures that cost and performance objectives are met by testing greater numbers of smaller, less expensive specimens. In this way, technology risks are assessed early in the program. In addition, the knowledge acquired at a given level of structural complexity is built up before progressing to a level of increased complexity. Achieving substantiation of structural performance by testing alone can be p- hibitively expensive because of the number of specimens and components required to characterize all material systems, loading scenarios and boundary conditions. Building Block Approachprogramscan achieve signi?cant cost reductionsby se- ing a synergy between testing and analysis. The more the development relies on analysis, the less expensive it becomes. The use of advanced computational models for the prediction of the mechanical response of composite structures can replace some of the mechanical tests and can signi?cantly reduce the cost of designing with composites while providing to the engineers the information necessary to achieve an optimized design.

Book Effects of Water Absorption on the Behavior of Composite Materials Reinforced with Natural Fibers

Download or read book Effects of Water Absorption on the Behavior of Composite Materials Reinforced with Natural Fibers written by Ziad El hachem and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural fibers are perceived as good substitutes to glass fibers but have been found to have strong hydrophilic behavior that can lead to the poor mechanical performance of the composite. Therefore, the understanding of the behavior of the bio-based composites when exposed to wet environment is crucial in order to evaluate their efficient use. The present thesis is devoted to study the diffusive behavior of biobased PP/flax composites when exposed to wet environments. The objective is to analyze more precisely the repercussions of moisture absorption, specifically the swelling of the materials and the evolution of their mechanical properties with water absorption. The effects of fiber content, coupling agent and environmental relative humidity conditions on the aforementioned behaviors were investigated. Multi-scale approaches were tested to try to predict the diffusive behavior and the swelling at saturation of the composite based on the properties of its constituents. Additionally, a Finite Element Model was elaborated in order to simulate the obtained experimental results, which led to the determination of the diffusion parameters, the evolution of the hygroscopic expansion coefficient and the obtention of the stress distribution along the thickness of the material.
