The contributions cover several aspects of this discipline, from mathematical analysis, numerical simulation and modeling viewpoints, including motion of rigid and elastic bodies in a viscous liquid, particulate flow and hemodynamic.

Book Fluid Structure Interaction II

Download or read book Fluid Structure Interaction II written by Hans-Joachim Bungartz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), i.e., the interplay of some moveable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid, are among the most widespread and most challenging coupled or multi-physics problems. Although much has been accomplished in developing good computational FSI methods and despite convincing solutions to a number of classes of problems including those presented in this book, there is a need for more comprehensive studies showing that the computational methods proposed are reliable, robust, and efficient beyond the classes of problems they have successfully been applied to.This volume of LNCSE, a sequel to vol. 53, which contained, among others, the first numerical benchmark for FSI problems and has received considerable attention since then, presents a collection of papers from the "First International Workshop on Computational Engineering - special focus FSI," held in Herrsching in October 2009 and organized by three DFG-funded consortia. The papers address all relevant aspects of FSI simulation and discuss FSI from the mathematical, informatical, and engineering perspective.

Book A Fluid structure Interaction Model Capturing Longitudinal Displacement in Arteries

Download or read book A Fluid structure Interaction Model Capturing Longitudinal Displacement in Arteries written by Martina Bukac and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this thesis is on numerical modeling of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with application to hemodynamics. Recent in vivo studies, utilizing ultrasound contour and speckle tracking methods, have identified significant longitudinal wall displacements and viscoelastic arterial wall properties over a cardiac cycle. Existing computational models that use thin structure approximations of arterial walls have so far been limited to elastic models that capture only radial wall displacements. In this thesis, we present a new model and a novel loosely coupled partitioned numerical scheme modeling fluid-structure interaction (FSI) in blood flow allowing non-zero longitudinal displacement.

Book Numerical Simulation of Fluid structure Interaction for Tilting disk Mechanical Heart Valves

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Fluid structure Interaction for Tilting disk Mechanical Heart Valves written by Ardavan Aliabadi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, 27.1 million non-institutionalized adults were diagnosed with heart disease in 2010. The number of deaths associated with heart disease in 2009 was reported to be 599,413, claiming the lives of 195 out of every 100,000 people, which makes heart disease the number one killer in the U.S. Even though mechanical heart valves (MHVs) have proven to save lives in many of these cases, they are still not perfect, and complications arising from their design have reduced their application. To better understand the important factors and pursue remedies, numerous experimental investigations have been conducted; however, despite impressive improvements, small-scale studies suffer from lower levels of accuracy and sometimes are very costly to conduct. As in many other areas of research, numerical simulations can be helpful in reducing costs and supplementing such experimental work. The computational effort in this thesis focused on the numerical analysis of current tilting-disk MHVs. In this work, an implicit fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation of the Bjork-Shiley design was carried out using in-house codes implemented in the commercial code software FLUENT. In-house codes in the form of journal files, schemes, and user-defined functions (UDFs) were integrated to automate the inner iterations and enable communication between the fluid and the moving disk at the interfaces. Based on the investigation of the current simulations, a new design aiming at improving the hemodynamic performance is suggested. The hemodynamics of flow in current tilting-disk valves was compared with the suggested design, and it is concluded that the suggested design has a better hemodynamic performance in terms of shear stress values and residence times.

Book Fluid Structure Interaction

Download or read book Fluid Structure Interaction written by Henri J.-P. Morand and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1995-08-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to describe the methods leading to mechanical and numerical modelling of the linear vibrations of elastic structures coupled with internal fluids (sloshing, hydroelasticity and structural acoustics). It is characteristic of the problems under consideration that they are multidisciplinary involving structural and fluid representation and related numerical aspects. The problems are solved by direct resolution of the coupled systems by finite element methods and modal reduction procedures using the eigenmodes of ?elementary subsystems?. The numerical methods described in this book have applications in various engineering disciplines such as the automotive and aerospace industries, civil engineering, nuclear engineering and bioengineering.

Book Numerical Simulation of Fluid Structure Interaction Problems

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Fluid Structure Interaction Problems written by Huidong Yang and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-structure interaction problems arise in many application fields such as flows around elastic structures or blood flow problems in arteries. One method for solving such a problem is based on a reduction to an equation at the interface, involving the so-called Steklov-Poincare operators. This interface equation is solved by a Newton iteration for which directional derivatives with respect to the interface perturbation have to be evaluated appropriately. One step of the Newton iteration requires the solution of several decoupled linear sub-problems in the structure and the fluid domains. These sub-problems are spatially discretized by a finite element method on hybrid meshes containing different types of elements. For the time discretization implicit first order methods are used. The discretized equations are solved by algebraic multigrid methods for which a stabilized coarsening hierarchy is constructed in a proper way.

Book Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian and Fluid Structure Interaction

Download or read book Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian and Fluid Structure Interaction written by M'hamed Souli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the fundamental basics for solving fluid structure interaction problems, and describes different algorithms and numerical methods used to solve problems where fluid and structure can be weakly or strongly coupled. These approaches are illustrated with examples arising from industrial or academic applications. Each of these approaches has its own performance and limitations. The added mass technique is described first. Following this, for general coupling problems involving large deformation of the structure, the Navier-Stokes equations need to be solved in a moving mesh using an ALE formulation. The main aspects of the fluid structure coupling are then developed. The first and by far simplest coupling method is explicit partitioned coupling. In order to preserve the flexibility and modularity that are inherent in the partitioned coupling, we also describe the implicit partitioned coupling using an iterative process. In order to reduce computational time for large-scale problems, an introduction to the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) technique applied to FSI problems is also presented. To extend the application of coupling problems, mathematical descriptions and numerical simulations of multiphase problems using level set techniques for interface tracking are presented and illustrated using specific coupling problems. Given the book's comprehensive coverage, engineers, graduate students and researchers involved in the simulation of practical fluid structure interaction problems will find this book extremely useful.
