In the simulations, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the Reynolds stress model for turbulence closure. The overall solution strategy is the SIMPLER algorithm, and the power-law scheme is used to discretise the convection and diffusion terms in the governing equations. The Reynolds stress model is applied to rectangular open-channel flows, partly-vegetated open-channel flows, and compound open-channel flows. The simulated mean flow and turbulence structures including streamwise mean velocity, secondary currents, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress, are provided and compared with measure data in the literature. As shown in this book, these comparisons reveal that the proposed Reynolds stress model successfully predicts the mean flow and turbulence statistics of turbulent open-channel flows.

Book excerpt: Both laminar and turbulent flows in strongly curved ducts, channels, and pipes are studied by numerical methods. The study concentrates on the curved square-duct geometry and flow conditions for which detailed measurements have been obtained recently by Taylor, Whitelaw, and Yianneskis. The solution methodology encompasses solution of the compressible ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations at low Mach number using a split linearized block implicit (LBI) scheme, and rapid convergence on the order of 80 noniterative time steps is obtained. The treatment of turbulent flows includes resolution of the viscous sublayer region. A series of solutions for both laminar and turbulent flow and for both two- and three-dimensional geometries of the same curvature are presented. The accuracy of these solutions is explored by mesh refinement and by comparison with experiment. In summary, good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement between solution and experiment is obtained. Collectively, this sequence of results serves to clarify the physical structure of these flows and hence how grid selection procedures might be adjusted to improve the numerical accuracy and experimental agreement. For a three-dimensional flow of considerable complexity, the relatively good agreement with experiment obtained for the turbulent flow case despite a coarse grid must be regarded as encouraging. It is evident that a lot of work (and a very significant increase in available computing power) is required before such methods can be adopted in daily's engineering practice. I hope to l"Cport on all these topics in a near future. The book is divided into six chapters, each· chapter in subchapters, sections and subsections. The first part is introduced by Chapter 1 which summarizes the equations of fluid mechanies, it is developed in C~apters 2 to 4 devoted to the construction of turbulence models. What has been called "engineering methods" is considered in Chapter 2 where the Reynolds averaged equations al"C established and the closure problem studied (§1-3). A first detailed study of homogeneous turbulent flows follows (§4). It includes a review of available experimental data and their modeling. The eddy viscosity concept is analyzed in §5 with the l"Csulting ~alar-transport equation models such as the famous K-e model. Reynolds stl"Css models (Chapter 4) require a preliminary consideration of two-point turbulence concepts which are developed in Chapter 3 devoted to homogeneous turbulence. We review the two-point moments of velocity fields and their spectral transforms (§ 1), their general dynamics (§2) with the particular case of homogeneous, isotropie turbulence (§3) whel"C the so-called Kolmogorov's assumptions are discussed at length.

Book excerpt: A low Reynolds number k-epsilon turbulence model was presented which yields accurate predictions of the kinetic energy near the wall. The model is validated with the experimental channel flow data of Kreplin and Eckelmann. The predictions are also compared with earlier results from direct simulation of turbulent channel flow. The model is especially useful for internal flows where the inflow boundary condition of epsilon is not easily prescribed. The model partly derives from some observations based on earlier direct simulation results of near-wall turbulence. The low Reynolds number turbulence model together with an existing curvature correction appropriate to spinning cylinder flows was used to simulate the flow in a U-bend with the same radius of curvature as the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) Turn-Around Duct (TAD). The present computations indicate a space varying curvature correction parameter as opposed to a constant parameter as used in the spinning cylinder flows. Comparison with limited available experimental data is made. The comparison is favorable, but detailed experimental data is needed to further improve the curvature model. Kaul, Upender K.
