Book The Economic Potentials of Natural Gas Production Stimulation by Nuclear Explosions

Download or read book The Economic Potentials of Natural Gas Production Stimulation by Nuclear Explosions written by Klaus-Peter Heiss and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present report describes the technical and economic potentials of gas stimulation by nuclear explosives. It is part of a larger study of Plowshare whose principal aim is to analyze, on the basis of all available technological information, the economic consequences which various Plowshare projects would entail. The present report shows that there exists a sufficiently firm body of information which will have to be enlarged and improved by experiments specifically related to gas stimulation to confirm the statement that gas stimulation can become one of the first technically and economically feasible applications of the peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. From this study it appears that gas stimulation can be applied with profit in existing tight gas fields which can not be exploited with conventional techniques. The study further states that if the existing body of information is confirmed, the peaceful application of nuclear explosives would increase the United States recoverable natural gas resources by amounts greatly in excess of known supplies. Specifically, it appears that the increase would extend the present supply of gas by adding a supply of at least 18 years. The true figure might in fact exceed 55 years additional supplies, even allowing for a substantial annual increase in demand by the United States economy.

Book excerpt: From National Technical Canadian Gas Association; Calgary, Alberta, Canada (17 Oct 1973). The technical bases of the emerging technology of nuclear stimulation of natural gas fields, the potential of this method for increasing the gas supply of the US, and public issues related to this technology are discussed. A technical appendix is provided with information on: reservoir producing characteristics; explosive design, availability, and cost; firing and space of explosives; economic parameters; and tabulated statistics on past and current projects on nuclear stimulation. (LCL).

Book Potential of Nuclear Explosives for Producing Hydrocarbons from Deposits of Oil Natural Gas Oil Shale and Tar Sands in the United States

Download or read book Potential of Nuclear Explosives for Producing Hydrocarbons from Deposits of Oil Natural Gas Oil Shale and Tar Sands in the United States written by J. Wade Watkins and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appreciable difference between producible proved reserves and ultimate reserves and resources of hydrocarbon deposits is of such magnitude that much petroleum, natural gas, shale oil, and bitumen will not be produced unless significant technological progress is made in production techniques. The shattering effect of contained nuclear explosives and, to a lesser extent, the heat produced, have been considered as stimulative forces when the thickness, depth, and nature of such deposits permit considering the use of nuclear devices. The technical feasibility of using nuclear explosives cannot be evaluated fully at present. Additional information is needed on the effects of pressure, heat, and radioactivity on the solids and fluids of hydrocarbon deposits, the nature and extent of induced fractures in different rock media, and the possibility of isolating and confining or removing radioactive contaminants. Final technical feasibility can only be determined by a field test. If technical feasibility is established, economic feasibility will depend upon the comparative cost of producing hydrocarbons by nuclear explosives and by conventional means. It is probable that an economic comparison would favor nuclear stimulation only where devices of relatively high yield could be used practicably and safely. (Author).

Book General Report on the Economics of the Peaceful Uses of Underground Nuclear Explosions

Download or read book General Report on the Economics of the Peaceful Uses of Underground Nuclear Explosions written by Oskar Morgenstern and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plowshare program of the Atomic Energy Commission sets forth to put nuclear explosives to peaceful, economic use. The present report evaluates the major fields of application proposed up to now for such explosives. They are the stimulation of gas and oil reservoirs, production of shale oil, applications to mining, cratering, and a list of various other projects, among them storage of natural gas, waste disposal and water resource management.

Book Cost and Feasibility of Stimulating Tight Gas Reservoirs with Chemical Explosives

Download or read book Cost and Feasibility of Stimulating Tight Gas Reservoirs with Chemical Explosives written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long, continuous, cylindrical charges of high explosives are considered as alternatives to nuclear explosives or massive hydraulic fracturing for the stimulation of gas production in tight gas formations. The calculational method was that used previously for nuclear stimulation; it was verified by comparison of the calculated and observed gas production from Rulison. The calculations indicate that charges of high explosives 24 inches in diameter and 2000 feet in length (the height assumed for the gas-bearing sands) detonated in four wells per section would be comparable in cost and effectiveness to estimates for one well stimulated by three 100-kiloton nuclear explosions. Stimulation by high explosives would require special development of the explosives (probably with ammonium nitrate as the base) to be suitably sensitive, temperature-resistant, and compatible with the gas-reservoir rocks; the required work appears to be straightforward, however. Comparative field testing is required to determine the optimum method (chemical or nuclear explosives or hydraulic fracturing) for a given region and to confirm that gas can be produced profitably for between 25 nd 80 er Mcf.
