Book Wage Differentials Across Sectors in Europe

Download or read book Wage Differentials Across Sectors in Europe written by Iga Magda and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a unique harmonized linked employer-employee dataset, this paper analyses the structure and determinants of inter-industry wage differentials in Central and Eastern European countries (Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland) and compares them to those observed in Western European states. Findings show substantial differences in earnings across sectors in all countries, even when controlling for a wide range of employee, job and employer characteristics. The hierarchy of sectors in terms of wages appears to be quite similar in Eastern and Western European countries, although the former tend to have higher levels of dispersion of inter-industry wage differentials.

Book nter Industry Wage Differentials in EU Countries

Download or read book nter Industry Wage Differentials in EU Countries written by Daphne Nicolitsas and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper documents the existence and main patterns of inter-industry wage differentials across a large number of industries for 8 EU countries at two points in time and explores possible explanations for these. The analysis uses the European Structure of Earnings Survey (SES), an internationally harmonised matched employer-employee dataset, to estimate inter-industry wage differentials conditional on a set of employee, employer and job characteristics. After investigating the possibility that unobservable employee characteristics lie behind the conditional wage differentials, a hypothesis which cannot be accepted, the paper investigates the role of institutional, industry structure and performance characteristics in explaining inter-industry wage differentials. The results suggest that inter-industry wage differentials are consistent with rent sharing mechanisms and that rent sharing is more likely in industries with firm-level collective agreements and with higher collective agreement coverage.

Book Migration and the Inter Industry Wage Structure in Germany

Download or read book Migration and the Inter Industry Wage Structure in Germany written by John Haisken-De New and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the issue of migration has received substantial attention in public debate in most countries of the West, only moderately satisfactory attention has been given in the economic literature. This book analyses the case of Germany from an economic point of view. It examines questions such as: Are there substantial negative side-effects of migration, faced by native workers, as sometimes publicly claimed? Do highly skilled and unskilled natives experience different effects? Do certain foreigner national groups affect natives differently? How important is the level of education of these incoming foreigners in determining wage impacts on natives? Do native workers in some industries profit from migration, while others suffer? How is the industrial wage structure affected by migration, if at all?

Book Interindustry Wage Differentials and Unobserved Ability

Download or read book Interindustry Wage Differentials and Unobserved Ability written by Anders Bjorklund and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the role of unobserved ability in explaining interindustry wage differentials. By using data on brothers, we account for unmeasured abilities shared by siblings. The data came from four Nordic countries and the United States. In the Nordic countries, only a moderate proportion of the variability in industry wages can be attributed to unobserved ability, while unmeasured factors explain as much as half of the U.S. industry-wage variation. Accounting for such differences, we show that the U.S. interindustry wage dispersion is similar with that in the Nordic countries.
