Book Novatian s Theology of the Father and Son

Download or read book Novatian s Theology of the Father and Son written by Daniel Lloyd and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christian theologian Novatian’s (c. 200-258) work begins with the topic of the unique and supreme Father. The categories he uses to describe the Father include both traditions from Christian sources and articulations of negative theology, especially as seen in Middle Platonism. After establishing the limitations set by philosophical and theological language, Daniel Lloyd turns to the positive categories Novatian chooses for describing the Father, highlighting Novatian’s emphasis on revelation, evaluating the parameters of the uniqueness of the Father, and showing that his theology presents the Father as distinct in attributes such as incomprehensibility, eternality, and inability to change. Having presented Novatian’s theology of the Father as the center point of his thought, Lloyd next assesses Novatian’s theology of the Son, showing that his categories and terminology, even to the point of calling the Son “God,” do not function against his theology of the unique Father. Novatian has many resources for speaking about the Son’s divinity in a way that does not contradict his theology of the Father. Lloyd presents and analyzes these resources to demonstrate that the Son’s status as ontologically subordinate to the Father is the best reading of De Trinitate.

Book The Son Is Truly Son

Download or read book The Son Is Truly Son written by Adam Renberg and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology in the early fourth century was engrossed with questions about the nature of the Son of God in relation to the Father. How was he 'from the essence' of the Father? Was there a time when he was not? While generally treated as a minor footnote in the development of trinitarian and christological theology by most modern scholars, Eusebius of Caesarea provides a rich and original contribution to these debates about the trinity and theology in the midst of the Arian controversy. This project explores the theological framework of Eusebius, focusing specifically on his understanding of the Son of God. Therein, it proposes and employs an underutilized lens to view the bishop - according to his exegetical strategies and his explicitly theological works. In doing so, Eusebius' primary understanding of the nature and role of the second person of the Trinity comes to the fore: the Son is truly Son. By focusing on his theology of the Son in multiple facets - trinitarianism, cosmology, soteriology, and Christology - his unique theological contribution to the church becomes clear. Eusebius is an important transmitter of Origenian theology and a foundational thinker for the later fourth and early fifth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While there have been recent, fine studies on aspects of John's doctrine of God, it is surprising that none summarizes and synthesizes what John has to say about God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In order to fill this gap, Kostenberger and Swain offer a fresh examination of John's trinitarian vision." "Part One situates John's trinitarian teaching within the context of Second Temple Jewish monotheism. Part Two examines the Gospel narrative in order to trace the characterization of God as Father, Son and Spirit, followed by a brief synthesis. Part Three deals more fully with major trinitarian themes in the Fourth Gospel, including its account of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and mission. A final chapter discusses the significance of John's Gospel for the church's doctrine of the Trinity, and a brief conclusion summarizes some practical implications." "For those who want to know what they ought to believe ... out of God's self-disclosure in Scripture, this book will be a stimulating delight' (D. A. Carson)."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this challenging book, rising New Testament scholar Simon Gathercole contradicts a commonly held view among biblical scholars -- that the Gospel of John is the only Gospel to give evidence for Jesus' heavenly identity and preexistence. The Preexistent Son demonstrates that Matthew, Mark, and Luke were also well aware that the Son of God existed with the Father prior to his earthly ministry. Gathercole supports his argument by considering the "I have come" sayings of Jesus and strikingly similar angelic sayings discovered in Second Temple and Rabbinic literature. Further, he considers related topics such as Wisdom Christology and the titles applied to Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels. Gathercole's carefully researched work should spark debate among Synoptic scholars and extend the understanding of anyone interested in this New Testament question.

Book excerpt: Although it is a foundational confession for all Christians, much of the theological significance of Jesus’s identity as “the Son of God” is often overlooked or misunderstood. Moreover, this Christological concept stands at the center of today’s Bible translation debates and increased ministry efforts to Muslims. New Testament scholar D. A. Carson thus sheds light on this important issue with his usual exegetical clarity and theological insight, first by broadly surveying Jesus’s biblical name as “the Son of God”, and then by focusing on two key texts that speak of Christ’s sonship. The book concludes with the implications of Jesus’s divine sonship for how modern Christians think and speak about Christ, especially in relation to Bible translation and missionary engagement with Muslims across the globe.

Book The Trinitarian Theology of Hilary of Poitiers

Download or read book The Trinitarian Theology of Hilary of Poitiers written by Mark Weedman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hilary of Poitiers was exiled from his native Poitiers in Gaul to Cappadocia, his entire theological sensibility changed. The Latin bishop, schooled in the tradition of Tertullian and Novatian, became a full-throated participant in the Trinitarian controversies of his time. This book offers a new reading of Hilary’s Trinitarian theology that takes into account the historical context of Hilary’s thought. It first examines this context and the course of Hilary’s engagement with his Homoian opponents. It then turns to the key themes of Hilary’s theology as he worked them out in that context. The result is a work that not only helps clarify Hilary’s theology, but that offers new insight into the Trinitarian controversies as a whole.
