Book excerpt: This new edition of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all organisms living in the world-largest biogeographical area. The present volume is an updated edition of the first issue in 2003 but restricted to data published before the year 2000. It contains information about 33,914 taxa (together with synonyms), and increases the number of included species and other taxa by almost 5,000. In addition, thousands of species have their distributional data completed, and their ranks, systematic positions and nomenclature corrected. Almost two hundred new acts fix systematics and nomenclature, and numerous problems are discussed. Even such well known genera as Calosoma and Carabus, or tribes as Bembidiini and Panagaeini, are completely reorganized compared to the previously published catalogues. Thus, the work is a scaffold for biotic surveys, ecological studies, and nature conservation. It responds to the urgent need of an assessment of the still remaining forms of life, threatened by the on-going destruction of habitats. Taxonomy provides the basic building blocks of our understanding of the diversity of life. It stems from innate human curiosity: confronted with an unknown species we ask first “what is it”? Taxonomists recognize species and other systematic entities (taxa), define them and place them within the framework of known organisms, providing means for their subsequent identification. Fourteen new synonymies are established together with 44 new combinations and 8 reversions to original combinations of genus group and species group names. Six generic and 7 species group names are removed from synonymy and re-established as valid names. One name has been changed in status from species to subspecies, and another the reverse. The diagnostic features of each genus are presented and a brief summary is given of species that are probably wrongly placed generically. The male genitalia of type species of most genera are illustrated by half-tone photographs and the whole moth by colour photographs. Twenty genera have been removed from the Arctiidae and placed in the families Noctuidae, Lymantriidae or Geometridae. One species has been transferred to the Notodontidae.

Volume 2 appeared in 2009 and had four regularly submitted papers and the Proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on the Chrysomelidae (held 6-8 July, 2008 at Durban, South Africa) with nine papers based on presentations to this meeting. The present volume also combines a number of regular papers with the proceedings of a symposium. In 2010, the European Symposium on the Biology of the Chrysomelidae was held within the frame of the IXth European Congress of Entomology (ECE) at Budapest, Hungary, on August 23. Hungary ? as the host country of the congress - has a long tradition of entomological research and always had a marked bridging role in the social life of entomologists of Europe. The ECE has been co-organized by the Hungarian Entomological Society which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. The Hungarian Entomological Society is one of the oldest scientific societies in Hungary with continuous activity, including the 1950s, when most Hungarian societies were dissolved by the communist government. This congress offered an important opportunity for entomologist to exchange ideas, results, and social matters. On top of all, the city of Budapest provided a beautiful background to this memorable scientific and social event. We, the organisers of the Symposium on Chrysomelidae, are proud and happy to see our conference represented by five papers based on contributions to it in vol. 157 of ZooKeys (Research on Chrysomelidae vol. 3). Four more papers on leaf beetles complete this volume. We thank authors and publishers for helping to make research on leaf beetles more visible and easier to access.
