Download or read book Pour une nouvelle critique de l conomie politique written by Bernard Stiegler and published by Editions Galilée. This book was released on 2009 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book For a New Critique of Political Economy

Download or read book For a New Critique of Political Economy written by Bernard Stiegler and published by Polity. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catastrophic economic, social and political crisis of our time calls for a new and original critique of political economy Ð a rethinking of Marx’s project in the very different conditions of twenty-first century capitalism. Stiegler argues that today the proletarian must be reconceptualized as the economic agent whose knowledge and memory are confiscated by machines. This new sense of the term ‘proletarian’ is best understood by reference to Plato’s critique of exteriorized memory. By bringing together Plato and Marx, Stiegler can show how a generalized proletarianization now encompasses not only the muscular system, as Marx saw it, but also the nervous system of the so-called creative workers in the information industries. The proletarians of the former are deprived of their practical know-how, whereas the latter are shorn of their theoretical practice, and both suffer from a confiscation of the very possibility of a genuine art of living. But the mechanisms at work in this new and accentuated form of proletarianization are the very mechanisms that may spur a reversal of the process. Such a reversal would imply a crucial distinction between one’s life work, originating in otium (leisure devoted to the techniques of the self), and the job, consisting in a negotium (the negotiation and calculation, increasingly restricted to short-term expectations), leading to the necessity of a new conception of economic value. This short text offers an excellent introduction to Stiegler’s work while at the same time representing a political call to arms in the face of a deepening economic and social crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What I love, and those whom I love, you, that is to say us in so far as we are capable of forming a we, all this I love, and I love them, and I love you infinitely" (Bernard Steigler April 1952- August 2020). When Bernard Stiegler writes "I love you" in the quote above, he openly provokes us to question or experience the meaning or contact of these words. He also invites us to question the relationship between a thinker's life and their thought. For Stiegler, they were inextricable. His life was one that focused on friendship but not friendships at a purely social level but ones that produced philosophy, politics, and existential truths. Bringing together scholars who knew Stiegler, including Shaj Mohan, Achille Mbembe, Divya Dwivedi, Peter Szendy, and Emily Apter, this volume provides an original - and personal - insight into his life and philosophy. Each piece gives a sense of the wide range of Stiegler's work and how it affected the praxis of the philosopher in different parts of the world.

Book The New French Philosophy

Download or read book The New French Philosophy written by Ian James and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a critical assessment of key developments in contemporary French philosophy, highlighting the diverse ways in which recent French thought has moved beyond the philosophical positions and arguments which have been widely associated with the terms 'post-structuralism' and 'postmodernism'. These developments are assessed through a close comparative reading of the work of seven contemporary thinkers: Jean-Luc Marion, Jean-Luc Nancy, Bernard Stiegler, Catherine Malabou, Jacques Rancière, Alain Badiou and François Laruelle. The book situates the writing of each philosopher in relation to earlier traditions of French thought. In differing ways, these philosophers decisively distance themselves from the linguistic paradigm which dominated so much twentieth-century thought in order to rethink philosophical conceptions of materiality, worldliness, shared embodied existence and human agency or subjectivity. They thereby open the way for a radical renewal of the claims, possibilities and transformative power of philosophical thinking itself. This book will be an indispensable text for students of philosophy and for anyone interested in current developments in philosophy and social thought.

Book A Philosophy of Catastrophes or a Catastrophe of Philosophies

Download or read book A Philosophy of Catastrophes or a Catastrophe of Philosophies written by Jacques Richard and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many currents in philosophical writings, that deal with today's serious ecological problems and the catastrophes they engender. The aim of this book is to show the diversity of these currents and to judge them on the basis of their ability to provide us with concrete tools for getting out of the ecological impasse in which we find ourselves today, notably the urgency to find new types of ecological and human management. Some of these currents are hopeless: they only offer the prospect of a mental adaptation to these catastrophes, or invite us to leave planet earth and take refuge on other planets. Others, of a cynical bent, openly support the forces that have led to the current situation of 'ecological bankruptcy', arguing that the same economic system that has led us to the current ecological impasse will be able to provide us with miraculous technical solutions for our salvation. Still others, the vast majority, are so cut off from the realities of today's economic world, and in particular from the problems of practical business management, that their very general views offer very few operational solutions for changing the situation. And yet there are some philosophies, admittedly very few in number, that seem appropriate to the radical transformation that is needed of the management of capitalist firms: the philosophy of catastrophes is not necessarily synonymous with a catastrophe of philosophies. The author draws on philosophy , economics, accounting, and history to address what many consider humanity’s most serious challenge.

Book Machinic Assemblages of Desire

Download or read book Machinic Assemblages of Desire written by Paulo de Assis and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of assemblage has emerged in recent decades as a central tool for describing, analysing, and transforming dynamic systems in a variety of disciplines. Coined by Deleuze and Guattari in relation to different fields of knowledge, human practices, and nonhuman arrangements, “assemblage” is variously applied today in the arts, philosophy, and human and social sciences, forming links not only between disciplines but also between critical thought and artistic practice. Machinic Assemblages focuses on the concept’s uses, transpositions, and appropriations in the arts, bringing together the voices of artists and philosophers that have been working on and with this topic for many years with those of emerging scholar-practitioners. The volume embraces exciting new and reconceived artistic practices that discuss and challenge existing assemblages, propose new practices within given assemblages, and seek to invent totally unprecedented assemblages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honouring the memory of the late Bernard Stiegler, this edited collection presents a broad spectrum of contributions that provide a complex and coherently articulated image of Stiegler's thought which reached beyond the boundaries of academic, artistic and experimental techno-scientific enclaves where it had been originally received. Stiegler's philosophical work encompassed theorization, social diagnosis, planning, practical and territorial experimentation, politics, and aesthetics. In its wake, the essays in this volume celebrate and explore the wealth of this multi-dimensional legacy. They examine the conditions of human life in general, its foundational intermittence, and carry forward Stiegler's post-phenomenological unfolding of the distinctive spatio-temporalities that weave together the epoch we call 'present'. Engaging closely with Stiegler's original impetus for the creation of technologies of care, as well as of communities of knowledge and artistic practice,

Book Une critique de l conomie politique 2 L tat l imp rialisme la crise

Download or read book Une critique de l conomie politique 2 L tat l imp rialisme la crise written by Jacques Valier and published by FeniXX. This book was released on 1982-01-01T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Metamodernism

Download or read book Metamodernism written by Jason Ananda Josephson Storm and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, scholars have been calling into question the universality of disciplinary objects and categories. The coherence of defined autonomous categories—such as religion, science, and art—has collapsed under the weight of postmodern critiques, calling into question the possibility of progress and even the value of knowledge. Jason Ananda Josephson Storm aims to radicalize and move beyond these deconstructive projects to offer a path forward for the humanities and social sciences using a new model for theory he calls metamodernism. Metamodernism works through the postmodern critiques and uncovers the mechanisms that produce and maintain concepts and social categories. In so doing, Storm provides a new, radical account of society’s ever-changing nature—what he calls a “Process Social Ontology”—and its materialization in temporary zones of stability or “social kinds.” Storm then formulates a fresh approach to philosophy of language by looking beyond the typical theorizing that focuses solely on human language production, showing us instead how our own sign-making is actually on a continuum with animal and plant communication. Storm also considers fundamental issues of the relationship between knowledge and value, promoting a turn toward humble, emancipatory knowledge that recognizes the existence of multiple modes of the real. Metamodernism is a revolutionary manifesto for research in the human sciences that offers a new way through postmodern skepticism to envision a more inclusive future of theory in which new forms of both progress and knowledge can be realized.

Book The Sacred and the Political

Download or read book The Sacred and the Political written by Elisabetta Brighi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between the sacred and the political, transcendence and immanence, religion and violence? And how has this complex relation affected the history of Western political reason? In this volume an international group of scholars explore these questions in light of mimetic theory as formulated by René Girard (1923-2015), one of the most original thinkers of our time. From Aristotle and his idea of tragedy, passing through Machiavelli and political modernity, up to contemporary biopolitics, this work provides an indispensable guide to those who want to assess the thorny interconnections of sacrality and politics in Western political thought and follow an unexplored yet critical path from ancient Greece to our post-secular condition. While looking at the past, this volume also seeks to illuminate the future relevance of the sacred/secular divide in the so-called 'age of globalization'.
