Book Explorations in Nominal Inflection

Download or read book Explorations in Nominal Inflection written by Gereon Müller and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorations in Nominal Inflection is a collection of new articles that focus on nominal inflection markers in different languages. The studies are concerned with the morphological inventories of markers, their syntactic distribution, and, importantly, the interaction between the two. As a result, the contributions shed new light on the morphology/syntax interface, and on the role of morpho-syntactic features in mediating between the two components. Issues that feature prominently throughout are inflection class, case, gender, number, animacy, syncretism, iconicity, agreement, the status of paradigms, the nature of morpho-syntactic features, and the structure of nominal projections. Recurrent analytical tools involve the concepts of competition (optimality, specificity), underspecification, and economy, in various theoretical frameworks. James P. Book Form and Meaning of Pronouns in the English German and Russian Language

Download or read book Form and Meaning of Pronouns in the English German and Russian Language written by Elena Dubodelova and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 1,7, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Englische Philologie), course: HS Understanding English-German Contrasts, language: English, abstract: Since pronouns are the main grammatical devices by which acts of speaking are tied to the persons who are engaged in the conversation, many linguists investigate how pronouns are employed as a means of coming to understand the ways that speech and society are related. The expression ‘central pronouns’ for personal , reflexive and possessive pronouns suggests that these subclasses have a number of features in common and that other, more peripheral pronominal subclasses can be characterized by properties not shared by all members. It appears that the class of pronouns is conceptualized by Quirk et al. and other authors as something like a ‘cluster’ or ‘radial category’ with a prototypical core represented by personal pronouns. With regard to their referential functions, those pronouns are traditionally described in terms of deixis and anaphora. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the pronominal systems of English, German and Russian and to compare them. The special focus of comparison is the reflexive pronouns due to their complexity and in some aspects controversy.

Book Child Language Acquisition

Download or read book Child Language Acquisition written by Ben Ambridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is children's language acquisition based on innate linguistic structures or built from cognitive and communicative skills? This book summarises the major theoretical debates in all of the core domains of child language acquisition research (phonology, word-learning, inflectional morphology, syntax and binding) and includes a complete introduction to the two major contrasting theoretical approaches: generativist and constructivist. For each debate, the predictions of the competing accounts are closely and even-handedly evaluated against the empirical data. The result is an evidence-based review of the central issues in language acquisition research that will constitute a valuable resource for students, teachers, course-builders and researchers alike.

Book The Genitive

Download or read book The Genitive written by Anne Carlier and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the fifth in the series Case and Grammatical Relations across Languages, is devoted to genitive constructions in a range of Indo-European languages (Russian, French, Romanian, German and Swedish), as well as Finnish, Bantu languages and Northern Akhvakh (Northeast Caucasian). Definitions of genitives typically start out from the notion of an inflectional marker, often suffixal, that marks dependency relations of a noun phrase with respect to another noun phrase and conveys possessive meaning. The contributions in this volume demonstrate a huge range of variation in genitives, semantically (from possessive meaning to generalized dependency), morphologically (from affixes to different types of clitics) and syntactically (from adnominal uses to argument relations and adjunct uses). The volume contains both general surveys of genitives and case studies of the semantics, pragmatics and historical development of specific genitive constructions. It will be of interest to scholars and students in syntax, semantics, morphology, typology, and historical linguistics.

Book Linguistic Changes of Strong and Weak Verbs Noun Plurals and Personal Pronouns from the Old English to the Middle English Period

Download or read book Linguistic Changes of Strong and Weak Verbs Noun Plurals and Personal Pronouns from the Old English to the Middle English Period written by Dörte Ridder and published by . This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,1, University of Sunderland (English Department), course: English Past and Present, 13 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Passage of time is a contributory factor to linguistic change (Pyles 78). Language change cannot be considered without its context in time. Developments take place daily but can best be recognized by categorizing the changes into the existing period classifications and comparing them to the changes in a different period in the evolution of the English language. The following essay will examine linguistic features of the Old English period, which can be dated from 450 to 1150 and compare and contrast them to the Middle English period, which can typically be dated from 1150 to 1500. These two periods have been chosen because they follow successively and therefore show direct linguistic changes. The most important one to be scrutinized will be the fact that Old English has been a synthetic language, "one that indicates the relation of words in a sentence largely by means of inflections" (Baugh and Cable 54). Especially endings of the noun and pronoun, the adjective and the verb are concerned. In the course of the Middle English period, English changed to an analytic language that did not depend on inflectional endings, but rather on prepositions, auxiliary verbs and word order to show relationships. In a first step essentials of the Old English and the Middle English period and a short historical categorisation shall be outlined. Subsequently by analysing strong and weak verbs, noun plurals and personal pronouns it shall be shown how Old English changed from a highly inflected language to an extremely analytic one in Middle English. Book Pronouns Clitics and Empty Nouns

Download or read book Pronouns Clitics and Empty Nouns written by Phoevos Panagiotidis and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two issues little discussed in the generative literature are the internal structure of pronouns and what it is in Syntax that triggers pronominal reference. This monograph treats these two topics in detail and investigates whether pronominal (strong, weak and clitic pronouns) and related elliptical expressions can be given a unified syntactic representation. The answer, derived from a wealth of cross-linguistic evidence, is largely affirmative: pronominals include a semantically empty noun as part of their internal structure. The case of null subjects in 'pro-drop' languages is also examined and it is argued that they are not empty pronominal categories but, rather, the reflex of a 'verbal determiner'. Finally, using the internal structure of pronouns as a sort of 'litmus paper', the book explores the relationship between functional and lexical heads as well as the notions of selection and licensing in syntax, and offers new insights into the categorial status of functional categories.
