Book excerpt: Polyhedra have cropped up in many different guises throughout recorded history. In modern times, polyhedra and their symmetries have been cast in a new light by combinatorics an d group theory. This book comprehensively documents the many and varied ways that polyhedra have come to the fore throughout the development of mathematics. The author strikes a balance between covering the historical development of the theory surrounding polyhedra, and presenting a rigorous treatment of the mathematics involved. It is attractively illustrated with dozens of diagrams to illustrate ideas that might otherwise prove difficult to grasp. Historians of mathematics, as well as those more interested in the mathematics itself, will find this unique book fascinating.

Download or read book Geometry and Symmetry written by L. Christine Kinsey and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-04-19 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book for mathematics and mathematics education majors helps students gain an appreciation of geometry and its importance in the history and development of mathematics. The material is presented in three parts. The first is devoted to a rigorous introduction of Euclidean geometry, the second covers various noneuclidean geometries, and the last part delves into symmetry and polyhedra. Historical contexts accompany each topic. Exercises and activities are interwoven with the text to enable the students to explore geometry. Some of the activities take advantage of geometric software so students - in particular, future teachers - gain a better understanding of its capabilities. Others explore the construction of simple models or use manipulatives allowing students to experience the hands-on, creative side of mathematics. While this text contains a rigorous mathematical presentation, key design features and activities allow it to be used successfully in mathematics for teachers courses as well.

Book Polyhedra Primer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Pearce
  • Publisher : Van Nostrand Reinhold Company
  • Release : 1978
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book Polyhedra Primer written by Peter Pearce and published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company. This book was released on 1978 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a lucid, thoughtful guide to understanding the structure and organization of three-dimensional space. In 250 captioned drawings this book brilliantly communicates the beauty and geometry of polyhedra. Beginning with polygons and tessellations, it proceeds in a logical sequence to finite polyhedra, dual polyhedra, space filling, and open packings. Important considerations of symmetry, periodic and uniform patterns, and regular and semi-regular forms are presented. Because the understanding of polyhedra is enhanced by the manipulation of models, a chapter of both two- and three-dimensional constructions is included.

Book From Summetria to Symmetry The Making of a Revolutionary Scientific Concept

Download or read book From Summetria to Symmetry The Making of a Revolutionary Scientific Concept written by Giora Hon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many literary critics seem to think that an hypothesis about obscure and remote questions of history can be refuted by a simple demand for the production of more evidence than in fact exists. The demand is as easy to make as it is impossible to satisfy. But the true test of an hypothesis, if it cannot be shown to con?ict with known truths, is the number of facts that it correlates and explains. Francis M. Cornford [1914] 1934, 220. It was in the autumn of 1997 that the research project leading to this publication began. One of us [GH], while a visiting fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science (University of Pittsburgh), gave a talk entitled, “Proportions and Identity: The Aesthetic Aspect of Symmetry”. The presentation focused on a confusion s- rounding the concept of symmetry: it exhibits unity, yet it is often claimed to reveal a form of beauty, namely, harmony, which requires a variety of elements. In the audience was the co-author of this book [BRG] who responded with enthusiasm, seeking to extend the discussion of this issue to historical sources in earlier periods. A preliminary search of the literature persuaded us that the history of symmetry was rich in possibilities for new insights into the making of concepts. John Roche’s brief essay (1987), in which he sketched the broad outlines of the history of this concept, was particularly helpful, and led us to conclude that the subject was worthy of monographic treatment.

Book Rigidity and Symmetry

Download or read book Rigidity and Symmetry written by Robert Connelly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains recent contributions to the fields of rigidity and symmetry with two primary focuses: to present the mathematically rigorous treatment of rigidity of structures and to explore the interaction of geometry, algebra and combinatorics. Contributions present recent trends and advances in discrete geometry, particularly in the theory of polytopes. The rapid development of abstract polytope theory has resulted in a rich theory featuring an attractive interplay of methods and tools from discrete geometry, group theory, classical geometry, hyperbolic geometry and topology. Overall, the book shows how researchers from diverse backgrounds explore connections among the various discrete structures with symmetry as the unifying theme. The volume will be a valuable source as an introduction to the ideas of both combinatorial and geometric rigidity theory and its applications, incorporating the surprising impact of symmetry. It will appeal to students at both the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as post docs, structural engineers and chemists.
