This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Proceedings of the Nineteenth Session of the Hague Conference on Private International Law encompasses all preparatory work and records of meetings which led to the adoption of the Hague Convention on the Law Applicable to Certain Rights in Respect of Securities held with an Intermediary (the Hague Securities Convention). The signing of this Convention on 5 July 2006 by two of the world's major financial markets, the United States and Switzerland, shows the relevance of the new treaty. Traditional rules, based on physical transfers and direct holdings, are too diverse and inadequate to deal with securities which are nowadays transferred and pledged by electronic entries to accounts with clearing and settlement systems and other intermediaries. By identifying specific conflict rules, the Hague Securities Convention provides a means to remedy this lack of legal certainty which has characterized for too long the field of security transactions. The Proceedings will enable the financial world, but also legal practitioners and academics to grasp the background and full objectives of this very innovative international instrument.

Book excerpt: Spanning the Strait: Studies in Unity in the Western Mediterranean brings together a multidisciplinary collection of essays that examines the deep connections that bound together the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghrib in the medieval and early modern periods. Six articles on topics ranging from the eighth-century slave trade to sixteenth-century apocalypticism trace and analyze movement, mutual influence and patterns shared in the face of political, religious, and cultural difference. By transcending traditional disciplinary and temporal divisions, this collection of essays highlights the long history of contact and exchange that united the two sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. A comprehensive introduction by the editors contextualizes the articles within the last half-century of scholarship and salient contemporary trends. Contributors are Adam Gaiser, Linda G. Jones, Hussein Fancy, S.J. Pearce, David Coleman, and Marya T. Green-Mercado.
Download or read book Medieval Studies and the Computer written by Anne Gilmour-Bryson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Studies and the Computer focuses on the use of computers in medieval studies and humanities research. Topics covered range from encoding and concording texts to the use of conceptual glossaries by medievalists, as well as the use of computers for compiling Middle English lexicography and the Wisconsin Dictionary of the Old Spanish Language. A computer analysis of metrical patterns in the epic Beowulf and of Notker Labeo's Old High German is also presented. Comprised of 26 chapters, this volume begins by discussing "contexts" in concordances and the set of conventions employed in text encoding. The reader is then introduced to the series of initiatives undertaken in Belgium to study Latin literature and linguistics; the use of conceptual glossaries by medieval scholars; and the use of the computer to make a word list of the Decretum Gratiani and to study Geoffrey Chaucer's vocabulary. Subsequent chapters discuss a computer program called KLIC (Key Letter In Context) for graphological analysis; a set of routines written in SAIL (Stanford Artificial Intelligence Language) for use by social historians in quantitative analysis or text processing; and the use of Mark IV, a general-purpose file management system, to analyze medieval charters. This book will be of interest to medievalists, social historians, students and scholars of humanities, and computer scientists.

Download or read book Gregory of Nyssa The Minor Treatises on Trinitarian Theology and Apollinarism written by Volker Henning Drecoll and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings present the results of the 11th International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa held in Tübingen in 2008. The Trinitarian thought of Gregory deserves special attention because of its importance for the ending of the Trinitarian controversy in the late fourth century, paving the way for the widely accepted Trinitarian theology in the fifth century. This volume (which does not include Contra Eunomium) offers a contribution to the research on Gregory's Trinitarian theology as it is present notably in his so-called minor treatises. It provides a German translation of Ad Eustathium, Ad Graecos, Ad Ablabium, Ad Simplicium, Adversus Macedonianos, and De deitate filii. Detailed analysis of each treatise is accompanied by supporting studies on related theological and philosophical themes, followed by contributions which take into consideration the link between Gregory's Trinitarian thought and the christological question (In illud tunc et ipse filius, the anti-Apollinarist works).
