Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Book of Exodus IN manuscript and proof sheets, we have been travelling over a deeply-instructive and most interesting portion of the word of God the book OF exodus. Redemption by blood occupies a prominent place therein. It characterizes the book. God's many mercies to His redeemed, in the display of His power, the patience of His love, and the riches of His grace, flow from it. The great question of Israel's relationship to God is settled by the blood of the lamb. It changes their condition entirely. Israel within the blood-sprinkled door-posts was God's redeemed, blood-bought people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Critical and Practical, on the Book of Exodus, Vol. 2 of 2: Designed as a General Help to Biblical Reading and Instruction The form of government which prevailed among the descendants of Abraham, prior to the time of Moses, was the patriarchal. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, governed their respective families in virtue of that paternal authority which was, in the early ages of the world, universally conceded to the fathers and heads of households. The families thus governed were the natural germs of tribes, every one of which obeyed its own prince (nan: nasi), who was originally the first born of the founder of the tribe, but in progress of time appears to have been elected. Ip proportion as the numbers of the tribes were argmented their heads or plriarclu became powerful chieftains, and under the title of princes, elders, and heads of tribes, answered very nearly to the MM: and mire of the Bedouin Arabs and other nomads races of modern times spread over the regions of the East. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exodus: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes I have explained in the previous volume the purpose of this series of the Modern Reader's Bible the History of Israel as presented by themselves. I have also explained the mode by which I propose, without altering the order of the Scriptural paragraphs, to bring this Bible History into the form familiar to us in modern books: separating in type arrangement between narrative and such matter as a modern historian would express by notes and appendices, separating again between the main historic narrative and the incidents told with epic fulness, and dividing the whole into what appear to be its logical sections. Book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus

Download or read book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus written by Austin Surls and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The obvious riddles and difficulties in Exod 3:13–15 and Exod 6:2–8 have attracted an overwhelming amount of attention and comment. These texts make important theological statements about the divine name YHWH and the contours of the divine character. From the enigmatic statements in Exod 3:13–15, most scholars reconstruct the original form of the name as “Yahweh,” which is thought to describe YHWH’s creative power or self-existence. Similarly, Exod 6:3 has become a classic proof-text for the Documentary Hypothesis and an indication of different aspects of God’s character as shown in history. Despite their seeming importance for “defining” the divine name, these texts are ancillary to and preparatory for the true revelation of the divine name in the book of Exodus. This book attempts to move beyond atomistic readings of individual texts and etymological studies of the divine name toward a holistic reading of the book of Exodus. Surls centers his argument around in-depth analyses of Exod 3:13–15, 6:2–8 and Exod 33:12–23 and 34:5–8. Consequently, the definitive proclamation of YHWH’s character is not given at the burning bush but in response to Moses’ later intercession (Exod 33:12–23). YHWH proclaimed his name in a formulaic manner that Israel could appropriate (Exod 34:6–7), and the Hebrew Bible quotes or alludes to this text in many genres. This demonstrates the centrality of Exod 34:6–7 to Old Testament Theology. The character of God cannot be discerned from an etymological analysis of the word yhwh but from a close study of YHWH’s deliberate ascriptions made progressively in the book of Exodus.

These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Notes on the book of Exodus: Look inside the book: You have God's own word for it—'When I see the blood, I will pass over you.'—'We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.'—'But now, in Christ Jesus, ye who sometimes were far off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ.'—'Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood.' ...'By faith Moses, when he was come24 to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. ...Hence, though we read, in Exodus, that 'Moses looked this way and that way'—that 'he feared and said, 'Surely this thing is known,'' and, finally, 'Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh;' yet we are taught, in Hebrews, that what he did, he did 'by faith'—that he did not fear 'the wrath of the king'—that 'he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.'

Book Exodus a Commentary

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 1962
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Exodus a Commentary written by Martin Noth and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1962 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exodus is seen in its relation to the preceding Genesis and to the succeeding three books of the Pentateuch. Unlike Genesis, which dealt with individuals, Exodus is primarily concerned with Israel collectively and with the basic elements of Israel's faith. The author shows that the central motifs are the flight from Egypt, especially the crossing of "the sea", and the theophany and covenant at Sinai. The exegesis deals with the narrative as it appears in its final form but, in order to clarify the story, the author makes constant references to the successive stages in its literary development, and throughout the commentary he distinguishes the literary strands -- notably those know as J, E, and P -- that are woven into the fabric of the book.
