To see months of training culminate in a spectacular run, and finally see the rabbit coming full throttle straight for you. And to see him almost frozen in an instant of time as the shot connects and he tumbles into three inches of fresh snow; that is what rabbit hunting is all about." It's hard not to agree. Book excerpt: Revered as a symbol of fertility, sexuality, purity and childhood, beloved as a children's pet and widely represented in the myths, art and collectibles of almost every culture, the rabbit is one of the most popular animals known to humans. Ironically, it has also been one of the most misunderstood and abused. Indeed, the rabbit is the only animal that our culture adores as a pet, idolizes as a storybook hero and slaughters for commercial purposes. Stories Rabbits Tell takes a comprehensive look at the rabbit as a wild animal, ancient symbol, pop culture icon, commercial "product" and domesticated pet. In so doing, the book explores how one species can be simultaneously adored as a symbol of childhood (think Peter Rabbit), revered as a symbol of female sexuality (e.g., Playboy Bunnies), dismissed as a "dumb bunny" in domesticity and loathed as a pest in the wild. The authors counter these stereotypes with engaging analyses of real rabbit behavior, drawn both from the authors' own experience and from academic studies, and place those behaviors in the context of current debates about animal consciousness. In a detailed investigative section, the authors also describe conditions in the rabbit meat, fur, pet and vivisection industries, and raise important questions about the ethics of treating rabbits as we do. The first book of its kind, Stories Rabbits Tell provides invaluable information and insight into the life and history of an animal whom many love, but whom most of us barely know. As such, it is a key addition to the current thinking on animal emotions, intelligences and welfare, and the way that human perceptions influence the treatment of individual species.

Book The Genetics and Genomics of the Rabbit

Download or read book The Genetics and Genomics of the Rabbit written by Luca Fontanesi and published by CABI. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabbits have many uses - as well as being cherished pets, they are bred for their meat and fur, and as laboratory animals. Understanding their genetics and genomics is key to their production and, equally, to their care, welfare and health. Beginning with an introduction to the rabbit, including key information on their evolution, domestication and breed types, this book then concentrates on the genetics and genomics of this valuable animal. Concluding with practical applications such as creating transgenic and genome edited rabbits, biotechnical applications and the rabbit as a biomedical model, this book brings this important topic fully up-to-date. It provides an indispensable resource for animal and veterinary researchers and students, as well as rabbit breeders and laboratory scientists.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: 22 CHAPTER III. THE DEMAND FOR BABBITS AS AN ARTICLE OF FOOD. If it does not pay the farmer to produce rabbits, it is certainly not because the demand is limited or the price unre- munerative. As an article of food, the rabbit is esteemed by all classes, ?is relished by the invalid as much as by persons in robust health, served by the expert cook in a dozen dainty ways, and regarded almost as a luxury by the poor, to whom the rabbit often affords a means of making a savoury dinner, withthe aid of food-scraps, such as could not be easily procured in any other way. In all towns and populous districts the demand is practically unlimited, and has increased since the Ground Game Act came into force. It might be supposed that the market would be glutted when the shooting season is in full swing, and thousands of rabbits are disposed of daily from many estates; but that is not the case, and game-dealers compete keenly with each other for the chance of securing the rabbits at shootings, and will attend and remove them the day they are shot, and pay cash down if required. The dealers find ready buyers at from 2s. 6d. to 3s. 6d. per couple, and a little less for the smallest and worst shot; but a considerably better price can be got for hand-killed rabbits than for shot ones.A rabbit-farmer who raises rabbits exclusively for the market, who catches and kills them in the easy and ready way described in another chapter, and sends by regular instalments to the market, can make a much better bargain than the sportsman who keeps his rabbits on the ground longer for sport. The rabbit- farmer, as prices have been for a long period, may safely reckon on from 1s. to 1s. 3d., on an average, per rabbit of fair size and condition, and in every warren the rabbits are usually pretty uniform in t..
