This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Sites of Huron Villages in the Township of Tiny (Simcoe County) And Adjacent Parts: Prepared With a View to the Identification of Those Villages Visited and Described by Champlain and the Early Missionaries To the Honorable G. W. Ross, LL.D. In accordance with the desire of various persons interested in the history and archaeology of our Province, and more particularly of the country of the old Hurons, I submit herewith my notes on Huron remains in the Township of Tiny, which you have been kind enough to undertake to print. While engaged in other pursuits, I devoted considerable attention during the past twelve years to the collection of information regarding the Huron predecessors of the white men in this district, the results of which are partly included in the following notes. By your making provision for the publication of these notes, my work becomes in some degree a part of the more elaborate system carried on by Mr. Boyle of your department for the examination and collection of aboriginal remains throughout the Province. In the elucidation of this particular field, therefore, I trust these notes will prove of value and interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North America's museums are treasured for their collections of Aboriginal ethnographic and archaeological objects. Yet stories of how these artifacts were acquired often reveal unethical acts and troubling chains of possession, as well as unexpected instances of collaboration. For instance, archaeological excavation of Aboriginal graves was so prevalent in the late-eighteenth century that the government of Upper Canada legislated against it, although this did little to stop the practice. Many objects were collected by non-Native outsiders to preserve cultures perceived to be nearing extinction, while other objects were donated or sold by the same Native communities that later demanded their return. Some Native people collected for museums and even created their own.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Sites of Huron Villages in the Township of Oro: Simcoe County In the south half of the township the land is gently undu lating and does not reach a height of more than 250 feet above Lake Simcoe, which is 720 feet above sea level. The ground in this half was wet in many places when forested, and except in its easterly parts it contains but few Huron village-sites. It was too swampy for them. Book Children of Aataentsic

Download or read book Children of Aataentsic written by Bruce G. Trigger and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988-09-01 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trigger's work integrates insights from archaeology, history, ethnology, linguistics, and geography. This wide knowledge allows him to show that, far from being a static prehistoric society quickly torn apart by European contact and the fur trade, almost every facet of Iroquoian culture had undergone significant change in the centuries preceding European contact. He argues convincingly that the European impact upon native cultures cannot be correctly assessed unless the nature and extent of precontact change is understood. His study not only stands Euro-American stereotypes and fictions on their heads, but forcefully and consistently interprets European and Indian actions, thoughts, and motives from the perspective of the Huron culture. The Children of Aataentsic revises widely accepted interpretations of Indian behaviour and challenges cherished myths about the actions of some celebrated Europeans during the "heroic age" of Canadian history. In a new preface, Trigger describes and evaluates contemporary controversies over the ethnohistory of eastern Canada.
