Book Research Methods in Applied Settings

Download or read book Research Methods in Applied Settings written by Jeffrey A. Gliner and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2000-02 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this unique text found that while most students can "crunch" the numbers quite easily and accurately with a calculator or computer, many have trouble seeing the "big picture" or seeing how research questions and design influence data analysis. As a result, the authors developed a semantically consistent framework that integrates traditional research approaches (experimental, quasi-experimental, comparative) into three basic kinds of research questions (difference, associational, and descriptive), which, in turn, lead to three kinds or groups of statistics with the same names. This text: *helps students become good consumers of research by demonstrating how to analyze and evaluate research articles; *offers a number of summarizing diagrams and tables that clarify confusing or difficult to learn topics; *points out the value of qualitative research and how it should lead quantitative researchers to be more flexible; *divides all quantitative research questions into five logically consistent categories that help students select appropriate statistics and understand their cause and effect; and *classifies design into three major types: between groups, within subjects, and mixed groups and shows that, although these three types use the same general type of statistics (e.g., ANOVA), the specific statistics in between-groups design are different from those in within-subjects and mixed groups.

Book Abstracts and Abstracting

Download or read book Abstracts and Abstracting written by Tibor Koltay and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their changing role, abstracts remain useful in the digital world. Highly beneficial to information professionals and researchers who work and publish in different fields, this book summarizes the most important and up-to-date theory of abstracting, as well as giving advice and examples for the practice of writing different kinds of abstracts. The book discusses the length, the functions and basic structure of abstracts, outlining a new approach to informative and indicative abstracts. The abstractors’ personality, their linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge and skills are also discussed with special attention. Despite the relatively large number of textbooks on the topic there is no up-to-date book on abstracting in the English language In addition to providing a comprehensive coverage of the topic, the proposed book contains novel views - especially on informative and indicative abstracts The discussion is based on an interdisciplinary approach, blending the methods of library and information science and linguistics

Book Abstract Film and Beyond

Download or read book Abstract Film and Beyond written by Malcolm Le Grice and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1981 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Malcolm Le Grice, an important experimental filmmaker from England, film journalist for Studio International, and teacher ... gives us a lucid account, both historical and theoretical, of the main preoccupations of abstract filmmakers.... "Le Grice begins with a painter, Cezanne, to show how his preoccupation with pictorial space is a key to any understanding of the notion of abstraction. He goes on to discuss the Futurists' cinema, the early abstract film experiments by Eggeling, Duchamp and others in Germany and France of the '20s, the West Coast filmmakers of the '40s, and a stimulating view of the experimental film movement after WW II, including the works of Brakhage, Snow, Gidal and Sharits." - Art Direction "Whether or not one agrees with Le Grice's valuation of an alternate cinema, Abstract Film and Beyond clearly demonstrates that the cinema, that great twentieth-century art, is no mere entertainment, but an event of tremendous importance and implication." - The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism

Book Sets Groups and Mappings An Introduction to Abstract Mathematics

Download or read book Sets Groups and Mappings An Introduction to Abstract Mathematics written by Andrew D. Hwang and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces students to the world of advanced mathematics using algebraic structures as a unifying theme. Having no prerequisites beyond precalculus and an interest in abstract reasoning, the book is suitable for students of math education, computer science or physics who are looking for an easy-going entry into discrete mathematics, induction and recursion, groups and symmetry, and plane geometry. In its presentation, the book takes special care to forge linguistic and conceptual links between formal precision and underlying intuition, tending toward the concrete, but continually aiming to extend students' comfort with abstraction, experimentation, and non-trivial computation. The main part of the book can be used as the basis for a transition-to-proofs course that balances theory with examples, logical care with intuitive plausibility, and has sufficient informality to be accessible to students with disparate backgrounds. For students and instructors who wish to go further, the book also explores the Sylow theorems, classification of finitely-generated Abelian groups, and discrete groups of Euclidean plane transformations.

Book Dupuytren Disease and Related Diseases The Cutting Edge

Download or read book Dupuytren Disease and Related Diseases The Cutting Edge written by Paul M. N. Werker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, leading international experts showcase the latest advances in research into Dupuytren disease and its clinical management. The coverage spans all relevant specialties, including cell biology, biomechanics, genomics, surgery, pharmacotherapy, and radiotherapy. The opening sections address epidemiology, cellular and extracellular events, and genetics. Treatment by means of collagenase injection, percutaneous needle fasciotomy, and other surgical and minimally invasive approaches is then extensively discussed. Comparative studies of different approaches are reviewed, and aspects of patient assessment, examined. The prevention and treatment of disease recurrences are also addressed. Further sections consider related conditions, other treatment options, and future pathways for research. This book should be read by all who treat or conduct research into Dupuytren disease. It is based on presentations delivered at the 2015 International Conference on Dupuytren Disease, held in Groningen, the Netherlands, which was designed to promote a coordinated global response to the disease involving patients, scientists, and clinicians.
