This book was released on 1963 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson's life from 1826 to 1832 has a classic dramatic structure, beginning with his approbation to preach in October 1826, continuing with his courtship, his brief marriage to Ellen Tucker, and his misery after her death, and concluding with his departure from the ministry. The journals and notebooks of these years are far fewer than those in the preceding six years. Emerson noted down many ideas for sermons in his journals, but as time went on he wrote the sermons independently. Occasionally he wrote openly about family matters, but except for the passionate response to Ellen and her death the journals tell little about the impact upon him of other people and outside events. The pattern is consistent with the earlier journals: Emerson used them mainly to record his thought, to develop and express his ideas. His religious and intellectual interests were undergoing significant changes in orientation or emphasis. He was less concerned with the existence of God than with the nature and influence of Christ. He continued to reassert the truth of Christianity, but in his growing unorthodoxy he came to show less and less sympathy with the church, with forms and ritual, with convention. And he began to wonder whether it is not the worst part of the man that is the minister. During these years, Emerson read more in Madame de Sta l, Wordsworth, G rando, and Coleridge, less in Milton, the Augustans, Dugald Stewart, and Scott. In style, he moved from a rambling, bookish rhetoric to the tautness and the cadences that mark his later Essays.

Download or read book Kierkegaard s Journals and Notebooks Volume 4 written by Søren Kierkegaard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55) has been at the center of a number of important discussions, concerning not only philosophy and theology, but also, more recently, fields such as social thought, psychology, and contemporary aesthetics, especially literary theory. Despite his relatively short life, Kierkegaard was an extraordinarily prolific writer, as attested to by the 26-volume Princeton University Press edition of all of his published writings. But Kierkegaard left behind nearly as much unpublished writing, most of which consists of what are called his "journals and notebooks." Kierkegaard has long been recognized as one of history's great journal keepers, but only rather small portions of his journals and notebooks are what we usually understand by the term "diaries." By far the greater part of Kierkegaard's journals and notebooks consists of reflections on a myriad of subjects--philosophical, religious, political, personal. Studying his journals and notebooks takes us into his workshop, where we can see his entire universe of thought. We can witness the genesis of his published works, to be sure--but we can also see whole galaxies of concepts, new insights, and fragments, large and small, of partially (or almost entirely) completed but unpublished works. Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks enables us to see the thinker in dialogue with his times and with himself. Volume 4 of this 11-volume series includes the first five of Kierkegaard's well-known "NB" journals, which contain, in addition to a great many reflections on his own life, a wealth of thoughts on theological matters, as well as on Kierkegaard's times, including political developments and the daily press. Kierkegaard wrote his journals in a two-column format, one for his initial entries and the second for the extensive marginal comments that he added later. This edition of the journals reproduces this format, includes several photographs of original manuscript pages, and contains extensive scholarly commentary on the various entries and on the history of the manuscripts being reproduced.
Download or read book Coleridge Notebooks V1 Notes written by Kathleen Coburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002. Volume 1 of the notes on the Notebooks of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, spanning from 1794 to 1804. The volume is in two parts, text and notes. During his adult life until his death in 1834, Coleridge made entries in more than sixty notebooks. Neither commonplace books nor diaries, but something of both, they contain notes on literary, theological, philosophical, scientific, social and psychological matters, plans for and fragments of works and many other items of great interest. Shortly after World War II, Kathleen Coburn, formerly of Victoria College in Toronto, rediscovered this great collection of unpublished manuscripts. With the support of the Coleridge estate, she embarked on a career of editing and publishing these volumes and was awarded with many honours for her work, including: a Leverhulme Award (1948), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1953), a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (1958), the Order of Canada (1974) and an honorary doctorate from her own university. Originally projected as a five volume set (each volume consisting of a book of text and a book of notes).

Book excerpt: The City is teaming with activity as usual and it’s a warm day. This correlates closely with the average weather conditions for the season. We are proud, quite rightly, of our standing in the LOCE League (Law and Order, Comfort and Efficiency). We are usually in the Top 10 and that is quite an achievement. But nothing is perfect. Indeed, that very statement is one of the City’s slogans to keep us on our toes! We are also proud that our City is run on democratic principles (when possible), managed by our fine team of DM5’s (when necessary, but usually our parliamentarians are perfectly capable), and backed by what is colloquially known as Central Computer. But what was discovered by DCI Cody was shocking! I was instructed to write an account in this old language, an official language of the Archive Mountain. If you are reading this, you must be a real scholar! See if you can figure out what’s going on, but don’t skip to the end and then claim you’re clever! If you cheat, we’ll know. “The writing style is quite hypnotic… it makes the reader with the characters grope towards meaning… the writing is intriguing and gives the City a terrible reality.” Alan Samson (publisher, Weidenfeld & Nicholson).
