Book The Loom of Language

Download or read book The Loom of Language written by Frederick Bodmer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1985 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an informative introduction to language: its origins in the past, its growth through history, and its present use for communication between peoples. It is at the same time a history of language, a guide to foreign tongues, and a method for learning them. It shows, through basic vocabularies, family resemblances of languages -- Teutonic, Romance, Greek -- helpful tricks of translation, key combinations of roots and phonetic patterns. It presents by common-sense methods the most helpful approach to the mastery of many languages; it condenses vocabulary to a minimum of essential words; it simplifies grammar in an entirely new way; and it teaches a language as it is actually used in everyday life.

Book LANGUAGE HACKING SPANISH Learn How to Speak Spanish Right Away

Download or read book LANGUAGE HACKING SPANISH Learn How to Speak Spanish Right Away written by Benny Lewis and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack the Code and Get Fluent Faster! "I had to learn [a new language] in a handful of days for a TV interview. I asked Benny for help and his advice was invaluable." - Tim Ferriss What if you could skip the years of study and jump right to speaking Spanish? Sound crazy? No, it's language hacking. It's about learning what's indispensable, skipping what's not - and using what you've learned to have real conversations in Spanish - from day one! Unlike most traditional language courses that try to teach you the rules of a language, Language Hacking Spanish, shows you how to learn and speak Spanish immediately through proven memory techniques, unconventional shortcuts and conversation strategies perfect by one of the world's greatest language learners, Benny Lewis, aka the Irish Polyglot. The Method Language Hacking takes a modern approach to language learning, blending the power of online social collaboration and the 80/20 principle of learning (Benny's ten #languagehacks show you how to achieve more with less!). It focuses on the conversations and language that learners need to master right away, rather than presenting language in the order of difficulty like most courses. This means you can start having conversations immediately. Course Features Each of the 10 units culminates with a speaking mission that you can choose to share on the italki Language Hacking learner community (www.italki.com/languagehacking) where you can give and get feedback and extend your learning beyond the pages of the book. The audio for this course is available for free on library.teachyourself.com or from the Teach Yourself Library app. You don't need to go abroad to learn a language any more.

Book Hacking Chinese

  • Author : Olle Linge
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2016-03-26
  • ISBN : 9781530334889
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Hacking Chinese written by Olle Linge and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-26 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning Chinese can be frustrating and difficult, partly because it's very different from European languages. Following a teacher, textbook or language course is not enough. They show you the characters, words and grammar you need to become proficient in Chinese, but they don't teach you how to learn them! Regardless of what program you're in (if any), you need to take responsibility for your own learning. If you don't, you will miss many important things that aren't included in the course you're taking. If you study on your own, you need to be even more aware of what you need to do, what you're doing at the moment and the difference between them. Here are some of the questions I have asked and have since been asked many times by students: How do I learn characters efficiently? How do I get the most out of my course or teacher? Which are the best learning tools and resources? How can I become fluent in Mandarin? How can I improve my pronunciation? How do I learn successfully on my own? How can I motivate myself to study more? How can I fit learning Chinese into a busy schedule? The answers I've found to these questions and many others form the core of this book. It took eight years of learning, researching, teaching and writing to figure these things out. Not everybody has the time to do that! I can't go back in time and help myself learn in a better way, but I can help you! This book is meant for normal students and independent language learners alike. While it covers all major areas of learning, you won't learn Chinese just by reading this book. It's like when someone on TV teaches you how to cook: you won't get to eat the delicious dish just by watching the program; you have to do the cooking yourself. That's true for this book as well. When you apply what you learn, it will boost your learning, making every hour you spend count for more, but you still have to do the learning yourself. This is what a few readers have said about the book: "The book had me nodding at a heap of things I'd learnt the hard way, wishing I knew them when I started, as well as highlighting areas that I'm currently missing in my study." - Geoff van der Meer, VP engineering "This publication is like a bible for anyone serious about Chinese proficiency. It's easy for anyone to read and written with scientific precision." - Zachary Danz, foreign teacher, children's theatre artist About me I started learning Chinese when I was 23 (that's more than eight years ago now) and have since studied in many different situations, including serious immersion programs abroad, high-intensity programs in Sweden, online courses, as well as on the side while working or studying other things. I have also successfully used my Chinese in a graduate program for teaching Chinese as a second language, taught entirely in Chinese mostly for native speakers (the Graduate Institute for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University). All these parts have contributed to my website, Hacking Chinese, where I write regularly about how to learn Mandarin.

  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Goldlist Method Notebook written by Crazy Polyglots and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you imagine you can learn hundreds of new words without effort? Yes, it's possible! Meet the Goldlist method! What is the Goldlist method? The Goldlist method is a simple vocabulary learning method using your long-term memory. The author of this method is the famous polyglot, David James. The basic rule of this method is that every day you write down a list of 20 words/expressions you want to learn in your notebook (we call it a headlist). Then you make 14-days break and come back to the list. You cover the expressions in your native language and translate them at loud. You sort out the expressions that you remember (you will find out you remember almost 30%!) and copy those you don't (14 expressions). This step we call 1st distillation. You wait next 14 days and repeat the process (2nd distillation). After the 2nd distillation, you sort out 10 expressions. Then after another 14 days, you make 3rd distillation, which the result is 7 expressions selected. More information you will find in our notebook. How does it work? This method uses your long-term memory. Because of that reason, it's so crucial you won't repeat the words from your headlist during the 14 days. The process of learning is making subconsciously and effortlessly. Try to not use another method to learn the vocabulary from your headlists. In that case, the words will proceed in your short-term memory and... you won't achieve the effect. With this 3-months notebook you will be able to learn 1680 new expressions! Why you should choose this notebook? It's not convenient to use standard stationery to make all processes so we decided to create the first notebook on Amazon dedicated to Goldlist practice! In this notebook you will find: introduction to Goldlist method with examples motivation page monthly learning planner 168 pages dedicated to 3 months of learning: you can create 84 different headlists, so you will be able to learn 1680 NEW EXPRESSIONS! Our notebook is printed on high-quality solid paper. Let's start your language adventure!

Book Drawing Translation Notebook Language Learning for the Visual Learner

Download or read book Drawing Translation Notebook Language Learning for the Visual Learner written by Tam Renai Ruiz and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the hardest parts of learning a language is learning vocabulary, or gaining an un-derstanding of sentences and expressions. Memorizing vocabulary on a word-by-word basis is forgettable and ineffective, as it is often learned outside of useful context. Are you trying to get out of the native language - target language translation trap? This notebook uses a tool we used when learning our first language: association. We associated words with visual input and actions. By associating words in the target language with pictures or actions, we create a direct path from the word to the object, skipping the extra step of translating into our native language. This helps us to begin to think in the target language, which is very helpful in developing fluency. Forget memorization and word definitions, and draw comprehensible input that your brain will remember. Available with blue or purple cover.

The studies draw on a wide range of contexts, from North and South America to Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Each provides principled links between theory, research and practice. While out-of-class learning will not replace the classroom, ultimately all successful learners take control of their own learning.
