Book Study Guide and Lecture Notebook

Download or read book Study Guide and Lecture Notebook written by Dawn Boyer and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study Guide and Lecture NotebookCORNELL Notes, T.H.I.E.V.E.S. study method, College & High School Lecture Notes, Study Skills, Workbooks, Test Preparation, Instruction Methods, Subject Notebooks This academic STUDY GUIDE AND LECTURE NOTEBOOK provides an academically-based organizational layout for the high school or university student to write vital information about the course topic, keep track of point of contact information for the instructor and class peers, as well as to study using a blend of proven study methodologies, including the following systems: The Cornell Notes method provides a system to condense / organize lecture notes by dividing the note-taking into two columns (pages): the note-taking column (usually on the right) with notes for summarizing lecture notes pages on the left-hand side (page). The summarization page allows the student to quickly summarize key points from the lecture notes on the right page to bullet points on the left page. The Textbook review section uses the T.H.I.E.V.E.S. study strategy, where the student / learner reviews and summarizes the information in the course textbook, with notes broken out into: T - title H - headings I - introduction E - every paragraph (first sentence) V - visuals / vocabulary - summarizing what the graphics are representing E - end of chapter questions S - summarize the entire chapter's content How to Use the Study NotebookThe student will take notes on the right hand pages marked Lecture notes in class. It is best to not try to write word-for-word, but to note the high-points of the important topics of the lecture. When finished, during a study session, the student will go back to the notes and using the left-hand page, summarize important points by listing points that may have been missed in class, but are present in the textbook or the instructor's worksheets from class. Before or after the class lecture, the student will use the T.H.I.E.V.E.S. system to summarize the information in the textbook, writing out vocabulary words and definitions, and answering the questions in the back of the chapter, rewriting the questions incorporated into the answer. If the student has any questions from the textbook or lecture notes they need to ask the instructor to expand upon in the next lecture, they can write those in the specific page for that purpose. If the instructor provides specific sources, references, or citations in class, the student can note those on the same page. The pages are placed 'oddly' in the layout of the book. This enables the student to open the notebook and have in-class lecture notes face the summary page to avoid having to flip the pages back and forth for information. Textbook study pages are marked with a dark triangle in the top right hand side of the page to help students quickly find textbook-specific note pages in the notebook. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How honeybees make collective decisions—and what we can learn from this amazing democratic process Honeybees make decisions collectively—and democratically. Every year, faced with the life-or-death problem of choosing and traveling to a new home, honeybees stake everything on a process that includes collective fact-finding, vigorous debate, and consensus building. In fact, as world-renowned animal behaviorist Thomas Seeley reveals, these incredible insects have much to teach us when it comes to collective wisdom and effective decision making. A remarkable and richly illustrated account of scientific discovery, Honeybee Democracy brings together, for the first time, decades of Seeley's pioneering research to tell the amazing story of house hunting and democratic debate among the honeybees. In the late spring and early summer, as a bee colony becomes overcrowded, a third of the hive stays behind and rears a new queen, while a swarm of thousands departs with the old queen to produce a daughter colony. Seeley describes how these bees evaluate potential nest sites, advertise their discoveries to one another, engage in open deliberation, choose a final site, and navigate together—as a swirling cloud of bees—to their new home. Seeley investigates how evolution has honed the decision-making methods of honeybees over millions of years, and he considers similarities between the ways that bee swarms and primate brains process information. He concludes that what works well for bees can also work well for people: any decision-making group should consist of individuals with shared interests and mutual respect, a leader's influence should be minimized, debate should be relied upon, diverse solutions should be sought, and the majority should be counted on for a dependable resolution. An impressive exploration of animal behavior, Honeybee Democracy shows that decision-making groups, whether honeybee or human, can be smarter than even the smartest individuals in them.

Book Darwin Darwinism and Conservation in the Galapagos Islands

Download or read book Darwin Darwinism and Conservation in the Galapagos Islands written by Diego Quiroga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores how Darwin ́s legendary and mythologized visit to the Galapagos affected the socioecosystems of the Islands, as well as the cultural and intellectual traditions of Ecuador and Latin America. It highlights in what way the connection between Darwin and the Galapagos has had real, enduring and paradoxical effects in the Archipelago. This Twenty Century construct of the Galapagos as the cradle of Darwin’s theory and insights triggered not only the definition of the Galapagos as a living natural laboratory but also the production of a series of conservation practices and the reshaping of the Galapagos as a tourism destination with an increasingly important flow of tourists that potentially threaten its fragile ecosystems. The book argues that the idea of a Darwinian living laboratory has been limited by the success of the very same constructs that promote its conservation. It suggests critical interpretations of this paradox by questioning many of the dichotomies that have been created to understand nature and its conservation. We also explore some possible ways in which Darwin's ideas can be used to better understand the social and natural threats facing the Islands and to develop sustainable and successful management practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All organisms and species are transitory, yet life endures. The origin, extinction, and evolution of species—interconnected in the web of life as "eternal ephemera"—are the concern of evolutionary biology. In this riveting work, renowned paleontologist Niles Eldredge follows leading thinkers as they have wrestled for more than two hundred years with the eternal skein of life composed of ephemeral beings, revitalizing evolutionary science with their own, more resilient findings. Eldredge begins in France with the naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, who in 1801 first framed the overarching question about the emergence of new species. The Italian geologist Giambattista Brocchi followed, bringing in geology and paleontology to expand the question. In 1825, at the University of Edinburgh, Robert Grant and Robert Jameson introduced the astounding ideas formulated by Lamarck and Brocchi to a young medical student named Charles Darwin. Who can doubt that Darwin left for his voyage on the Beagle in 1831 filled with thoughts about these daring new explanations for the "transmutation" of species. Eldredge revisits Darwin's early insights into evolution in South America and his later synthesis of knowledge into a theory of the origin of species. He then considers the ideas of more recent evolutionary thinkers, such as George Gaylord Simpson, Ernst Mayr, and Theodosius Dobzhansky, as well as the young and brash Niles Eldredge and Steven Jay Gould, who set science afire with their concept of punctuated equilibria. Filled with insights into evolutionary biology and told with a rich affection for the scientific arena, this book celebrates the organic, vital relationship between scientific thinking and its subjects.

Book Daybooks and Notebooks

Download or read book Daybooks and Notebooks written by Walt Whitman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Series Editors: Gay Wilson Allen and Sculley Bradley Originally published between 1961 and 1984, and now available in paperback for the first time, the critically acclaimed Collected Writings of Walt Whitman captures every facet of one of America's most important poets. Daybooks and Notebooks is an invaluable source for reference on Whitman’s daily activities. This sixteen-year record supplements the biographical information provided in the six volumes of Whitman's Correspondence, functioning as an account book, diary, journal, commonplace book, and notebook all in one. When Whitman began to keep them, the Daybooks were a personal record of predominantly business matters. As William White wrote in the introduction, “He was not only the author but the publisher of his works: he was likewise his own business manager, ship, and promoter. Whatever records he kept, of his sales and distribution, of printing and binding figures, of poetry and prose he sent to newspapers and magazines . . . he entered on the right-hand pages.” Volume II thus offers a rare look at Whitman as a businessman, tending as much to practical matters as to art.
