Download or read book The Frankenstein Notebooks written by Charles Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is arguably the best known work of the English Romantic period. First published in 1996, this edition of The Frankenstein Notebooks contains not only facsimiles and transcriptions of all of surviving manuscripts related to the novel and a corrected, critical text of Frankenstein (or The Modern Prometheus) but also a full range of factual information, drawn from Shelley’s and William Godwin’s letters and journals, from newspaper ads of the day, and from other available scholarship about the conception, gestation, and birth of Mary Shelley’s monster. This two volume set contains a wealth of information vital to the creation and reception of Frankenstein. It will enable scholars, critics and students to see for themselves the exact extent of P. B. Shelley’s editorial contributions and trace the artistic and ideological development of the novel at various stages in its formation. It will also enable the reader to explore the text itself to test and evaluate their own theses. Part one contains the draft notebook A, which was written between August or September and December 1816. This set will be of keen interest to those studying Frankenstein, the Romantics and 19th century literature.

Book Journals and Miscellaneous Notebooks of Ralph Waldo Emerson Volume III 1826 1832

Download or read book Journals and Miscellaneous Notebooks of Ralph Waldo Emerson Volume III 1826 1832 written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson's life from 1826 to 1832 has a classic dramatic structure, beginning with his approbation to preach in October 1826, continuing with his courtship, his brief marriage to Ellen Tucker, and his misery after her death, and concluding with his departure from the ministry. The journals and notebooks of these years are far fewer than those in the preceding six years. Emerson noted down many ideas for sermons in his journals, but as time went on he wrote the sermons independently. Occasionally he wrote openly about family matters, but except for the passionate response to Ellen and her death the journals tell little about the impact upon him of other people and outside events. The pattern is consistent with the earlier journals: Emerson used them mainly to record his thought, to develop and express his ideas. His religious and intellectual interests were undergoing significant changes in orientation or emphasis. He was less concerned with the existence of God than with the nature and influence of Christ. He continued to reassert the truth of Christianity, but in his growing unorthodoxy he came to show less and less sympathy with the church, with forms and ritual, with convention. And he began to wonder whether it is not the worst part of the man that is the minister. During these years, Emerson read more in Madame de Sta l, Wordsworth, G rando, and Coleridge, less in Milton, the Augustans, Dugald Stewart, and Scott. In style, he moved from a rambling, bookish rhetoric to the tautness and the cadences that mark his later Essays.

Book James Joyce s Manuscripts and Letters at the University of Buffalo

Download or read book James Joyce s Manuscripts and Letters at the University of Buffalo written by Peter Spielberg and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1962-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approximately 20,000 pages of Joyce manuscripts and letters in the Lockwood Memorial Library of the University of Buffalo here catalogued by Dr. Spielberg offer scholars and critics much unpublished and unsifted material for the explication and examination of Joyce's individual works, as well as the raw material necessary for a detailed exploration of James Joyce's creative process. The scope of the Buffalo Joyce Collection is vast, spanning the full range of Joyce's writing career from 1900 to 1940, from his Epiphanies to possible revisions for Finnegans Wake. Dr. Spielberg's work in compiling the present catalogue of Joyce's own writings and letters in the collection now provides for Joyceans a guide to what up until now has been mainly uncharted territory. The manuscripts--workbooks, notebooks, sketches, schemas, notes, early and late drafts, fair copies, typescripts, galley and page proofs, errata, translations, and letters--have been divided into ten major categories: "Epiphanies," "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," "Exiles," "Verses," "Ulysses," "Finnegans Wake," "Criticism," "Notebooks," "Miscellaneous Manuscripts," and "Letters from Joyce." Each item has been described and identified, following a uniform format for the pertaining facts: title, collation, pagination, contents, other markings, dating, publication, and notes. In his introduction to the catalogue, the author describes the Buffalo Joyce Collection itself, giving the history of its growth, its extent, and holdings. In discussing the manuscripts, he calls particular attention to the "Finnegans Wake Workbooks" (MSS. VI. A., B., C., and D.), which, he comments, "are probably the strangest manuscripts in existence--even for so strange a book as Finnegans Wake ... The apparent disorder and lock of organization of these workbooks is a false impression. Where the reader of the workbooks stumbles and bombinates through what seems to be utter blackness, Joyce danced and skipped with ease. What to us seems chaos was neatness and method to Joyce." It is Dr. Spielberg's hope that the manuscripts he has catalogued will, when examined in detail, "offer a key to the better understanding of the 'hides and hints and misses in prints' in the writings of the most controversial figure of twentieth-century literature."

Book Orpheus Descending and Suddenly Last Summer

Download or read book Orpheus Descending and Suddenly Last Summer written by Tennessee Williams and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of Tennessee Williams's most revered dramas in a single paperback edition for the first time. Orpheus Descending is a love story, a plea for spiritual and artistic freedom, as well as a portrait of racism and intolerance. When charismatic drifter Valentine Xavier arrives in a Mississippi Delta town with his guitar and snakeskin jacket, he becomes a trigger for hatred and a magnet for three outcast souls: storekeeper Lady Torrance, “lewd vagrant” Carol Cutrere, and religious visionary Vee Talbot. Suddenly Last Summer, described by its author as a “short morality play,” has become one of his most notorious works due in no small part to the film version starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift that shocked audiences in 1959. A menacing tale of madness, jealousy, and denial, the horrors in Suddenly Last Summer build to a heart-stopping conclusion. With perceptive new introductions by playwright Martin Sherman — he reframes Orpheus Descending in a political context and explores the psychology and sensationalism surrounding Suddenly Last Summer — this volume also offers Williams’s related essay, “The Past, the Present, and the Perhaps,” and a chronology of the playwright’s life and works.

Book excerpt: This stunning and powerfully relevant book tells the history of Antarctica through 100 varied and fascinating objects drawn from collections around the world. Retracing the history of Antarctica through 100 varied and fascinating objects drawn from collections across the world, this beautiful and absorbing book is published to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the first crossing into the Antarctic Circle by James Cook aboard Resolution, on 17th January 1773. It presents a gloriously visual history of Antarctica, from Terra Incognita to the legendary expeditions of Shackleton and Scott, to the frontline of climate change. One of the wildest and most beautiful places on the planet, Antarctica has no indigenous population or proprietor. Its awe-inspiring landscapes – unknown until just two centuries ago – have been the backdrop to feats of human endurance and tragedy, scientific discovery, and environmental research. Sourced from polar institutions and collections around the world, the objects that tell the story of this remarkable continent range from the iconic to the exotic, from the refreshingly mundane to the indispensable: - snow goggles adopted from Inuit technology by Amundsen - the lifeboat used by Shackleton and his crew - a bust of Lenin installed by the 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition - the Polar Star aircraft used in the first trans-Antarctic flight - a sealing club made from the penis bone of an elephant seal - the frozen beard as a symbol of Antarctic heroism and masculinity - ice cores containing up to 800,000 years of climate history This stunning book is both endlessly fascinating and a powerful demonstration of the extent to which Antarctic history is human history, and human future too.

Book Mark Twain s Notebooks and Journals Volume III

Download or read book Mark Twain s Notebooks and Journals Volume III written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume III of Mark Twain's notebooks spans the years 1883 to 1891, a period during which Mark Twain's personal fortunes reached their zenith, as he emerged as one of the most successful authors and publishers in American literary history. During these years Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court appeared, revealing the diversity, depth, and vitality of Mark Twain's literary talents. With his speeches, his public performances, and his lecture tour of 1884/1885, he became the most recognizable of national figures. At the same time, Mark Twain's growing fame and prosperity allowed him to plunge deeply into the business world, a sphere not suited to his erratic energies. He created the subscription publish firm of Charles L. Webster & Company, Which published the most profitable book of its time, the Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. And he became the primary financial support for the ingenious but imperfectible Paige typesetter. Within a few years both the publishing company and the typesetter had taxed Mark Twain's patience, and pocket, beyond endurance. The near bankruptcy of the publishing firm and the debacle of the typesetter scheme finally resulted in 1891 in a drastic decision--to leave the house in Hartford, Connecticut, which had long been the symbol of Mark Twain's rising fortunes and idyllic family life, and move to Europe for an indefinite period in the hope of reducing the family's living expenses. The Clemens family would never return to the Hartford house, and the European stay would lengthen into an almost unbroken nine years of exile. Mark Twain's notebooks permit an intimate view of this turbulent period, whose triumphs were tempered by intimations of financial disaster and personal bitterness.

Book Mark Twain s Notebooks Journals Volume I

Download or read book Mark Twain s Notebooks Journals Volume I written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1976-01-14 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1855, when the nineteen-year-old Sam Clements traveled from Saint Louis to Hannibal, Paris, and Florida, Missouri, and then to Keokuk, Iowa, he carried with him a notebook in which he entered French lessons, phrenological information, miscellaneous observations, and reminders about errands to be performed. This first notebook thus took the random form which would characterize most of those to follow. About the text: In order to avoid editorial misrepresentation and to preserve the texture of autograph documents, the entries are presented in their original, often unfinished, form with most of Clemens' irregularities, inconsistencies, errors, and cancellations unchanged. Clemens' cancellations are included in the text enclosed in angle brackets, thus ; editorially-supplied conjectural readings are in square brackets, thus [word]; hyphens within square brackets stand for unreadable letters, thus [--]; and editorial remarks are italicized and enclosed in square brackets, thus [blank page}- A slash separates alternative readings which Clemens left unresolved, thus word/word. The separation of entries is indicated on the printed page by extra space between lines; when the end of a manuscript entry coincides with the end of a page of the printed text, the symbol [#] follows the entry. A full discussion of textual procedures accompanies the tables of emendation and details of inscription in the Textual Apparatus at the end of each volume; specific textual problems are explained in headnotes or footnotes when unusual situations warrant.

Book Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts

Download or read book Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts written by Walt Whitman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Series Editors: Gay Wilson Allen and Sculley Bradley Originally published between 1961 and 1984, and now available in paperback for the first time, the critically acclaimed Collected Writings of Walt Whitman captures every facet of one of America’s most important poets. Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts gathers Whitman’s autobiographical notes, his views on contemporary politics, and the writings he made as he educated himself in ancient history, religion and mythology, health (including phrenology), and word-study. Included is material on his Civil War experiences, his love of Abraham Lincoln, his descriptions of various trips to the West and South and of the cities in which he resided, his generally pessimistic view of America’s prospects in the Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, and his reminiscences during his final years and his preoccupation with the increasing ailments that came with old age. Many of these notes served as sources for his poetry—first drafts of some of the poems are included as they appear in the notes—and as the basis for his lectures.
