Download or read book Bending Genre written by Margot Singer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the term "creative nonfiction" first came into widespread use, memoirists and journalists, essayists and fiction writers have faced off over where the border between fact and fiction lies. This debate over ethics, however, has sidelined important questions of literary form. Bending Genre does not ask where the boundaries between genres should be drawn, but what happens when you push the line. Written for writers and students of creative writing, this collection brings together perspectives from today’s leading writers of creative nonfiction, including Michael Martone, Brenda Miller, Ander Monson, and David Shields. Each writer’s innovative essay probes our notions of genre and investigates how creative nonfiction is shaped, modeling the forms of writing being discussed. Like creative nonfiction itself, Bending Genre is an exciting hybrid that breaks new ground.

Part 1 of this book follows Annie Burnes’s journey as a divorced woman trying to find her way in a life she no longer recognizes. Part 2 will finally answer the truth behind the disappearance of Evie Burnes. (Part 2 was previously published as What’s Left of Her.) Moments of You: Part 1 Annie Burnes believes in love, family, and happily-ever-after. For someone whose mother disappeared when she was a child, she’s determined to fulfill this dream. Too bad the man she married didn’t feel the same way. At thirty-two, the husband is gone, there are no children, and Annie’s soulmate is a four-legged rescue dog. Definitely not the life she’d imagined. Gallery owner Ian Debenidos grew up in a household with an authoritative father who did not tolerate weakness. No doubt this is why Ian refuses to let down his guard with anyone. But there’s something about Annie Burnes that makes him think about taking a risk… When Annie agrees to help Ian teach art classes to “kids in need,” they appear to have nothing in common. She says whatever lands in her brain, detests formal exercise, and doesn’t care if her clothes aren’t the latest style. He chooses his words with precision, runs five miles a day, and has a personal tailor. But the more time they spend together, the more they realize that opposites really do attract… Can Annie and Ian open their hearts and risk getting hurt for a chance at forever? Moments of You: Part 2 How could a mother walk away from her family? This is the question many readers asked after finishing Pieces of You, Book One of The Betrayed Trilogy. They wanted to know the real story behind the disappearance of Evie Burnes. This story offers an intimate glimpse into Evie’s life before her disappearance—and after. Included in this e-book is the first chapter of Strangers Like Us, a small town contemporary romance.

She's in danger and the only thing that can save her is reclaiming the identity she shunned years ago. He thinks she's a blue-blooded, orphaned sophisticate with a fat trust fund. However, lies have a way of catching up and causing their own damage. Fate forces Ash to perform the first selfless act of his life to protect Arianna from being blackmailed about her past. The price? He must walk away and forget about her. Two years later, the threat is gone and Ash returns, determined to win back the woman he's never forgotten and even more determined to get her to admit what she's been hiding. He reveals his true identity and pledges a future built on trust and honesty. But Ash expects the truth from her, too. Can Arianna open up to him when the last thirteen years have been built on a lie? And if she doesn't, will she risk losing him again--this time for good? How could a mother walk away from her family? - What’s Left of Her This is the question many readers asked after finishing Pieces of You, Book One of The Betrayed Trilogy. They wanted to know the real story behind the disappearance of Evie Burnes. What's Left of Her offers an intimate glimpse into Evie Burnes's life before her disappearance--and after. Note: While Pieces of You and Secrets of You are romances, What's Left of Her is not.
Download or read book Human Matter written by Rodrigo Rey Rosa and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This prizewinning Guatemalan author’s meta-novel delves into the secret police records and history of political violence in his homeland. In 2005, novelist Rodrigo Rey Rosa started visiting the Historical Archive of the Guatemala National Police, where millions of previously hidden records were being cataloged, bringing to light detailed evidence of crimes against humanity. In response, Rey Rosa crafted a meta-novel that weaves the language of arrest records and surveillance reports with the contemporary journal entries of a novelist (named Rodrigo) who is attempting to synthesize the stories of political activists, indigenous people, and others ensnared in a deadly web of state-sponsored terrorism. When Rodrigo’s access to the archive is suspended, he proceeds to the General Archives of Central America and the Library of Congress, also collaborating with the son of the Identification Bureau's former head in a relentless pursuit of understanding. Human Matter is both a tour de force of fiction and a sobering meditation on the realities of collective memory, raising timely questions about how our history is recorded and retold.

Download or read book The Accidental Possibilities of the City written by Katherine Smith and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claes Oldenburg’s commitment to familiar objects has shaped accounts of his career, but his associations with Pop art and postwar consumerism have overshadowed another crucial aspect of his work. In this revealing reassessment, Katherine Smith traces Oldenburg’s profound responses to shifting urban conditions, framing his enduring relationship with the city as a critical perspective and conceiving his art as urban theory. Smith argues that Oldenburg adapted lessons of context, gleaned from New York’s changing cityscape in the late 1950s, to large-scale objects and architectural plans. By examining disparate projects from New York to Los Angeles, she situates Oldenburg’s innovations in local geographies and national debates. In doing so, Smith illuminates patterns of urbanization through the important contributions of one of the leading artists in the United States.

Download or read book Composition in Black and White written by Kathryn Talalay and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-24 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Schuyler, a renowned and controversial black journalist of the Harlem Renaissance, and Josephine Cogdell, a blond, blue-eyed Texas heiress and granddaughter of slave owners, believed that intermarriage would "invigorate" the races, thereby producing extraordinary offspring. Their daughter, Philippa Duke Schuyler, became the embodiment of this theory, and they hoped she would prove that interracial children represented the final solution to America's race problems. Able to read and write at the age of two and a half, a pianist at four, and a composer by five, Philippa was often compared to Mozart. During the 1930s and 40s she graced the pages of Time and Look magazines, the New York Herald Tribune, and The New Yorker. Philippa grew up under the adoring and inquisitive eyes of an entire nation and soon became the role model and inspiration for a generation of African-American children. But as an adult she mysteriously dropped out of sight, leaving America to wonder what had happened to the "little Harlem genius." Suffering the double sting of racism and gender bias, Philippa had been rejected by the elite classical music milieu in the United States and forced to find an audience abroad, where she flourished as a world-class performer and composer. She traveled throughout South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia performing for kings, queens, and presidents. By then Philippa had added a second career as an author and foreign correspondent reporting on events around the globe--from Albert Schweitzer's leper colony in Lamberéné to the turbulent Asian theater of the 1960s. She would give a command performance for Queen Elisabeth of Belgium one day, and hide from the Viet Cong among the ancient graves of the Annam kings another. But behind the scrim of adventure, glamour, and intrigue was an American outcast, a woman constantly searching for home and self. "I am a beauty--but I'm half colored...so I'm always destined to be an outsider," she wrote in her diary. Philippa tried to define herself through love affairs, but found only disappointment and scandal. In a last attempt to reclaim an identity, she began to "pass" as Caucasian. Adopting an Iberian-American heritage, she reinvented herself as Felipa Monterro, an ultra-right conservative who wrote and lectured for the John Birch Society. Her experiment failed, as had her parents' dream of smashing America's racial barriers. But at the age of thirty five, Philippa finally began to embark on a racial catharsis: She was just beginning to find herself when on May 9, 1967, while on an unauthorized mission of mercy, her life was cut short in a helicopter crash over the waters of war-torn Vietnam. The first authorized biography of Philippa Schuyler, Composition in Black and White draws on previously unpublished letters and diaries to reveal an extraordinary and complex personality. Extensive research and personal interviews from around the world make this book not only the definitive chronicle of Schuyler's restless and haunting life, but also a vivid history of the tumultuous times she lived through, from the Great Depression, through the Civil Rights movement, to the Vietnam war. Talalay has created a highly perceptive and provocative portrait of a fascinating woman.
Download or read book Sandpiper Court Journal written by David A. Bragen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandpiper Court Journal is a fictional account of the second civil war, which bears witness to the racial strife and struggle that thrusts itself upon an unprepared and unsuspecting United States of America. Having elected its first African-American president with an overwhelming majority, the country appeared finally to have become the great melting pot that it was often called. Felled by an assassin's bullet during the inauguration, the president-elect's death causes that great melting pot to bubble over as the two sides, separated by the colors of their skin, wage war in their struggle to survive. Master Sergeant Franklin B. Pierce and Anthony Joseph (TJ) Bender are two middle class, average Americans who happen to end up on opposite sides of the conflict. Pierce, following orders and waging war against his fellow Americans, is conflicted by the insanity of it all. His disciplined training invokes the fierceness of a seasoned warrior. But, his Christian underpinnings tell him to treat his fellow man with love and respect. TJ, a suburban homeowner in the Midwest, is simply trying to survive, fighting a rearguard action with his fellow neighbors as the enemy first attacks their suburb, and then, their subdivision.
