Book Not Just Black and White

Download or read book Not Just Black and White written by Nancy Foner and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2004-04-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration is one of the driving forces behind social change in the United States, continually reshaping the way Americans think about race and ethnicity. How have various racial and ethnic groups—including immigrants from around the globe, indigenous racial minorities, and African Americans—related to each other both historically and today? How have these groups been formed and transformed in the context of the continuous influx of new arrivals to this country? In Not Just Black and White, editors Nancy Foner and George M. Fredrickson bring together a distinguished group of social scientists and historians to consider the relationship between immigration and the ways in which concepts of race and ethnicity have evolved in the United States from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. Not Just Black and White opens with an examination of historical and theoretical perspectives on race and ethnicity. The late John Higham, in the last scholarly contribution of his distinguished career, defines ethnicity broadly as a sense of community based on shared historical memories, using this concept to shed new light on the main contours of American history. The volume also considers the shifting role of state policy with regard to the construction of race and ethnicity. Former U.S. census director Kenneth Prewitt provides a definitive account of how racial and ethnic classifications in the census developed over time and how they operate today. Other contributors address the concept of panethnicity in relation to whites, Latinos, and Asian Americans, and explore socioeconomic trends that have affected, and continue to affect, the development of ethno-racial identities and relations. Joel Perlmann and Mary Waters offer a revealing comparison of patterns of intermarriage among ethnic groups in the early twentieth century and those today. The book concludes with a look at the nature of intergroup relations, both past and present, with special emphasis on how America's principal non-immigrant minority—African Americans—fits into this mosaic. With its attention to contemporary and historical scholarship, Not Just Black and White provides a wealth of new insights about immigration, race, and ethnicity that are fundamental to our understanding of how American society has developed thus far, and what it may look like in the future.

Book excerpt: A white man married to a black woman, spurred by a racist joke to feel 'fear and anguish' for children, Washington Post Magazine writer Harrington decided to 'go out and travel America's parallel black world' to explore the nation's racial conundrums. As he traverses the North, South and West, Harrington deftly paints vivid, brief scenes: a black businessman visits prison inmates, a worker in a road crew lights up at meeting Jesse Jackson, students at a small college in southern Illinois discuss interracial dating. He meets 'hard cop' Charleston police chief Reuben Greenberg, filmmaker Spike Lee and novelist James Alan McPherson, who says, 'I'm not a great man, but I'm not just a race person.' Reflecting on his own relationships with blacks, Harrington revisits relatives and former college classmates. While the insight 'racism still rages, but it is for too many blacks also an excuse' hardly merits its presentation as a revelation, Harrington rightly observes that America's racial conflicts also involve culture and class. 'Blacks and whites in America are the same and different,' he concludes, and his thoughtful mosaic should encourage fresh dialogue.

Book The White Womans Guide to Loving a Black Man

Download or read book The White Womans Guide to Loving a Black Man written by Makeba Cavette and published by Second Time Media. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The White Woman's Guide to Loving a Black Man is a woman to woman conversation written for the white women who found themselves in love with a Black American man, but were lost when it came to including the black culture into their lives and their inter-racial children's lives. Not because they didn't want to, but because either they didn't know or didn't understand the impact of not including it when raising their children. "I wrote this book because I felt like the white woman that had very little interaction with the Black community or only had television's depiction of Black America as their guide may miss some of the most important parts of the Black American culture," writes author Makeba. "The Black man may be oblivious to the long term cultural needs of the white woman he's in love with and their children. He may not think about how this white woman is going to get along with his black family members and may not think it necessary to give her any tips on how to integrate smoothly into the family." "I also hope that this guide will encourage communications between black and white women to encourage a more sound and informative environment for everyone involved. We cannot choose who our brother, son, father, cousin, nephew or friend has fallen in love with but this guide may be a way to help that woman love them."

Book excerpt: A lot of people have made up their minds about Rachel Doležal. But none of them know her real story. In June 2015, the media "outed" Rachel Doležal as a white woman who had knowingly been "passing" as Black. When asked if she were African American during an interview about the hate crimes directed at her and her family, she hesitated before ending the interview and walking away. Some interpreted her reluctance to respond and hasty departure as dishonesty, while others assumed she lacked a reasonable explanation for the almost unprecedented way she identified herself. What determines your race? Is it your DNA? The community in which you were raised? The way others see you or the way you see yourself? With In Full Color, Rachel Doležal describes the path that led her from being a child of white evangelical parents to an NAACP chapter president and respected educator and activist who identifies as Black. Along the way, she recounts the deep emotional bond she formed with her four adopted Black siblings, the sense of belonging she felt while living in Black communities in Jackson, Mississippi, and Washington, DC, and the experiences that have shaped her along the way. Her story is nuanced and complex, and in the process of telling it, she forces us to consider race in an entirely new light—not as a biological imperative, but as a function of the experiences we have, the culture we embrace, and, ultimately, the identity we choose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This entrancing book looks at [the clash of class and caste within the black community] . . . . An important reexamination of African American history." —Choice The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago showed the world that America had come of age. Dreaming that they could participate fully as citizens, African Americans flocked to the fair by the thousands. "All the World Is Here!" examines why they came and the ways in which they took part in the Exposition. Their expectations varied. Well-educated, highly assimilated African Americans sought not just representation but also membership at the highest level of decision making and planning. They wanted to participate fully in all intellectual and cultural events. Instead, they were given only token roles and used as window dressing. Their stories of pathos and joy, disappointment and hope, are part of the lost history of "White City." Frederick Douglass, who embodied the dream that inclusion within the American mainstream was possible, would never forget America's World's Fair snub.
