Book Counting the Cost

Download or read book Counting the Cost written by Art Lindsley and published by ACU Press. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Christians want to accelerate the world’s transition out of abject poverty, they need to examine the role of capitalism. Counting the Cost helps readers begin with the truth of Scripture. It then relies on the economic realities that come from our Godgiven design as the foundation for enabling readers to think critically about capitalism. We live in an unprecedented time in human history. The number of people living in abject poverty is decreasing at an unprecedented rate. Capitalism has played a major role in lifting people out of such poverty, yet many raise legitimate concerns. Does capitalism hurt the poor? Promote materialism? Harm the environment? Allow the rich to get richer at the expense of everyone else? Is capitalism really the best system for organizing societies and the economies that keep them running? This edited volume of articles by noted economists and theologians takes an honest and empathetic look at capitalism and its critiques from a biblical perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman’s story – set in Pre-Regency rural Shropshire (1794-1808) – which introduces the working class folk of Linmore Dale. Maria knows, from bitter experience, that a woman alone must do what she can to survive. Ten years ago, her life was in ruins, and she would have died but for the help of a gypsy herbalist in her time of need. Afterwards, she vowed to restore her good name and reputation, and if it took subterfuge to achieve, so be it. Since then Maria has, by sacrificing her youthful looks, become Miss Dinchope, housekeeper, the epitome of primness and virtue. Her past is forgotten but she has learned that respectability has many faces; some of which hide dark secrets and intrigues that are every bit as threatening as her own experience. Although she wishes to move on to better things, anger, an emotion she contrives to hide, drives her to protect the vulnerable servants for which she has responsibility. One little pauper child in particular, a new housemaid, touches an inexplicable chord of memory. A foundling at birth, Nell Walcote accepts her lowly place in village life, and tries to ignore the attention her tawny curls attract. She knows that she is different, but cannot explain how she is able to learn her letters and numbers while others struggle to understand. She attends school because Mrs Lucinda Grimble declares it must be so – and no one argues with the farmer’s wife. Forced to seek work at the age of ten, Nell meets Miss Dinchope, the housekeeper at Hillend Rectory. Engaged for a month’s trial, she responds well to a disciplined routine, but finds that while some servants pretend friendship, malice is their intent. Receptive to atmosphere, she senses dark undercurrents in the clerical household, and people in authority who purport to be what they are not. She feels apprehensive, but how can she leave when there is nowhere to go, and what chance has a foundling of acquiring work elsewhere? While Miss Dinchope holds fast to her wish to escape, Maria knows that having risen above adversity; she must train the girl for a better place in service, and, to avoid the problems that she encountered as a girl, insists that Nell avoids men... But will her guidance be enough? A heart-warming story, which gives a rare insight into the lives of women to whom kindness, honesty and friendship mean more than money and social class. The second part of an interlinking series, which is filled with love, loss, life and laughs.

Book excerpt: What difference would Catholic Social Tradition make if it guided our personal and communal financial decision-making? The Sermon on the Mount reminds us of this fundamental decision-making when it comes to questions of faith and money: “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth” (Matthew 6:24). In Counting the Cost, Clemens Sedmak and Kelli Reagan Hickey suggest a theological and spiritual discernment process for the everyday reality of budgeting and financial planning that explores the status of money and monetary values by reflecting on this gospel call. Counting the Cost explains how Catholic Social Teaching provides a framework for our thinking around finances by answering questions such as: What does this fundamental decision look like in times of financial scarcity and stewardship responsibilities? How do the attitudes that Jesus invites us into shape the ways we make financial decisions? And how can budgeting be and become a way of discipleship for individuals, parishes, and dioceses? The book includes a range of financial decision-making examples and reconstructs them as decisions about priorities, values, and commitments to respond to the world and its material realities in a gospel-inspired way. The Enacting Catholic Social Tradition series is dedicated to the systematic application of Catholic Social Teaching to real-world problems and issues. Written for both academics and pastoral practitioners who want to draw on and learn more about the rich resources of Catholic Social Tradition for the practical work of justice, the series aims to strengthen the capacity of the church to respond lovingly and well to the demands of the gospel.

Book Counting the Cost of Food Waste EU Food Waste Prevention HL 154

Download or read book Counting the Cost of Food Waste EU Food Waste Prevention HL 154 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Levy Control Framework (LCF) limit is due to increase significantly from £3.184 billion in 2013-14 to £7.6 billion by 2020-21. The funds raised and spent via the LCF will soon surpass DECC's departmental budget. There must be transparent arrangements which ensure that Parliament has adequate oversight of how these funds are raised and spent, particularly in the light of public concern over the cost of energy bills. This report has been produced ahead of Parliament's consideration of the Supplementary Estimates 2013-14 in order to draw to the House's attention the annual derogation obtained by DECC from HM Treasury to remove LCF-related expenditure and revenues from its Supplementary Estimates. The current situation has led to an absence of LCF-related reporting in the Department's end year Accounts. The Committee would like to debate in the House: the implications of DECC's levy-funded schemes along with other government initiatives which affect energy bills but which fall outside of the LCF; and the current inadequate reporting arrangements relating to LCF spending and revenues; and the developing plans for improving these arrangements and enhancing Parliamentary oversight in the future
