In 1977, Howie landed a summer job to offset college expenses. Forty years later, he finished his shift. Not a Bad Trip: A Pittsburgh Cab Story takes you along for the ride, offering an intimate view inside this often maligned and misunderstood profession. Readers encounter people from all walks of life, uncovering the humanity inside high-profile celebrities while discovering the extraordinary within ordinary folks. Not a Bad Trip unravels mysteries philosophers have forever pondered, like How do I hail a cab? What makes the airport The Promised Land? Why does my mediocre ride-share driver have five stars? Even the perennial How much should I tip? Relax, Enjoy the ride. And, yes, look out the windows as the place-Pittsburgh, becomes the star of the show.
Download or read book Brothers and Keepers written by John Edgar Wideman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A rare triumph” (The New York Times Book Review), this powerful memoir about the divergent paths taken by two brothers is a classic work from one of the greatest figures in American literature: a reflection on John Edgar Wideman’s family and his brother’s incarceration—a classic that is as relevant now as when originally published in 1984. A “brave and brilliant” (The Philadelphia Inquirer) portrait of lives arriving at different destinies, the classic John Edgar Wideman memoir, Brothers and Keepers, is a haunting portrait of two brothers—one an award-winning writer, the other a fugitive wanted for a robbery that resulted in a murder. Wideman recalls the capture of his younger brother, Robby, details the subsequent trials that resulted in a sentence of life in prison, and provides vivid views of the American prison system. A gripping, unsettling account, Brothers and Keepers weighs the bonds of blood, affection, and guilt that connect Wideman and his brother and measures the distance that lies between them. “If you care at all about brotherhood and dignity…this is a must-read book” (The Denver Post). With a new afterword by his brother Robert Wideman, recently released after more than fifty years in prison.
Download or read book Impossible Children written by Robert Yune and published by Sarabande Books. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these inventive short stories, characters must navigate an impossible world: America as we know it. Two estranged brothers on a road trip attempt to reconcile but end up at a Revolutionary War reenactment camp; a young woman moves in with her boyfriend and discovers an eerily personalized seduction manual on his bookshelf; a middle-aged Korean-American father attends college courses and is either blessed or haunted by the presence of Edward Moon, an eccentric billionaire who also happens to be “the most successful Korean in America.” Playfully engaging with genres like science fiction, the fairy tale, and the Gothic tale, the interconnected short stories of Impossible Children pit tiny heroes against tiny villains; the result is a stunning mapping of geography, heritage, immigration, freedom, and the mysterious forces behind epic ruins and epic successes.

Download or read book Do Not Go Gentle written by Ann Hood and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “breathtaking” memoir of a daughter’s quest to find a miracle for her dying father, by the bestselling author of The Book That Matters Most (Publishers Weekly). When her beloved father was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer, Ann Hood—the author Comfort: A Journey Through Grief—refused to give up. If conventional medicine could no longer help, then she would go to any length to find something that could—even if it took a miracle. In this heartfelt and heartbreaking narrative, Ann’s quest to save her father’s life becomes a reawakening of her self. Through trial and desperation she recollects the story of her family’s own past and their quest to find a better life in America, and renews her connection to her Italian Catholic heritage, all of which reminds her of where she came from and who she truly is: her father’s daughter. With a sensitive yet strong voice, Ann Hood’s “spiritual quest to make sense of her father’s fatal illness is rendered with exceptional grace” in a story that “affectingly explores the link between faith and family ties” (Entertainment Weekly). “[Ann Hood] creates an entire world of belief and tradition that sustains her. . . . The miracle that truly nurtures her is her art.” —The Providence Journal “This memoir is every bit as breathtaking as the poem after which it is named.” —Publishers Weekly

Download or read book The Greatest Love Story Never Told written by Richard Orion and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is based on a true love story that spanned almost two decades. The names and places have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals involved in this affair. The chronological sequence of events has been maintained for continuity. All the stories and experiences are based on facts. This book is about a love story that was kept secret for 18 years and perhaps shouldve remained a secret. The first book related to this love story was a book of poems entitled Somewhere, Sometime, Somehow: Love Poems and Short Stories published in 2008 by this author and Xlibris. For the perceptive reader of this book one can trace the ups and downs of our love relationship. These 18 years were filled with robust love and passion for each other. Perhaps it was fantasy; perhaps it was the most real thing we will ever experience. The heartbreaking part of this love affair is that I am not really sure my lover ever really understood or appreciated my profound and unconditional love for her. I opened my heart to her through poetry and thoughtful letters, but she rarely showed me what was in her heart. Perhaps it was a one-sided love affair, but I surely think and hope not. I was convinced that she truly loved me through her words and actions. At least I experienced a pure love that I had only dreamed was possible. The story is told mainly through the exchange of letters and emails to each other. Perhaps readers can experience and hopefully feel the deep love we felt for each other.

Book excerpt: One of the most anticipated books of 2017: Boston Globe, New York Times Book Review, New York's "Vulture", The Week, Bustle, BookRiot An NPR Best Book of 2017An AV Club Favorite Book of 2017A Barnes & Noble Best Book of 2017A Goodreads Choice Awards nominee David Sedaris tells all in a book that is, literally, a lifetime in the making. For forty years, David Sedaris has kept a diary in which he records everything that captures his attention-overheard comments, salacious gossip, soap opera plot twists, secrets confided by total strangers. These observations are the source code for his finest work, and through them he has honed his cunning, surprising sentences. Now, Sedaris shares his private writings with the world. Theft by Finding, the first of two volumes, is the story of how a drug-abusing dropout with a weakness for the International House of Pancakes and a chronic inability to hold down a real job became one of the funniest people on the planet. Written with a sharp eye and ear for the bizarre, the beautiful, and the uncomfortable, and with a generosity of spirit that even a misanthropic sense of humor can't fully disguise, Theft By Finding proves that Sedaris is one of our great modern observers. It's a potent reminder that when you're as perceptive and curious as Sedaris, there's no such thing as a boring day.
