Book excerpt: Every year hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make their painful, blister-popping way to the shrine of St James in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Most follow the celebrated Camino Francés over the Pyrenees then westward for nearly 780 kilometres; fewer choose to walk the quieter, lesser-known and - let's be honest - much shorter Camino Portugués which winds from Lisbon, north through Porto, into Galicia. Always a man to do things by halves, Patrick Tierney - a product of that gift that keeps on giving: a 1950s Irish Catholic upbringing - set out to walk the upper section of the Portuguese route. After a few heady days sampling the city's eponymous liquor, he skulks out of Porto into the shimmering heat of July, intending to reach Santiago in time for the city's annual celebration of its patron saint. On the way, our wanderer wrestles with many important issues. Can an atheist really go on pilgrimage? Could a two-week solitary hike help him adapt to life on his own following the death of his beloved wife? Is walking alone a good way to meet people? Who knew a combination of Compeed and Vaseline could ease the path to salvation? And can a thirsty Irishman find a decent beer anywhere in Iberia?Punctuated by creaking knees and a daily battle against chafing in unmentionable places, 'Northward to Santiago' is part memoir, part rumination on grief and loss, and in no way a reliable guide to hiking anywhere. Written by a man happy to describe himself as 'a mere pond skater on the meniscus of life', it offers neither insight nor profundity. It is instead an honest attempt to map the internal and external journey of a grumpy cynic, ageing and aching his way to some sort of reconciliation with what he has lost, gratitude for what he has had and, perhaps, picking up along the way faint hints of a future still to be explored. And - trigger alert - its pages contain splutterings that purport to be 'poetry'. You have been warned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the sixteenth through the mid-nineteenth centuries, Spain, then Mexico, and finally the United States took ownership of the land from the Gulf Coast of Texas and Mexico to the Pacific Coast of Alta and Baja California—today's American Southwest. Each country faced the challenge of holding on to territory that was poorly known and sparsely settled, and each responded by sending out military mapping expeditions to set boundaries and chart topographical features. All three countries recognized that turning terra incognita into clearly delineated political units was a key step in empire building, as vital to their national interest as the activities of the missionaries, civilian officials, settlers, and adventurers who followed in the footsteps of the soldier-engineers. With essays by eight leading historians, this book offers the most current and comprehensive overview of the processes by which Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. soldier-engineers mapped the southwestern frontier, as well as the local and even geopolitical consequences of their mapping. Three essays focus on Spanish efforts to map the Gulf and Pacific Coasts, to chart the inland Southwest, and to define and defend its boundaries against English, French, Russian, and American incursions. Subsequent essays investigate the role that mapping played both in Mexico's attempts to maintain control of its northern territory and in the United States' push to expand its political boundary to the Pacific Ocean. The concluding essay draws connections between mapping in the Southwest and the geopolitical history of the Americas and Europe.

San Francisco District and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents information developed in the course of a multi-year investigation of the need for shore protection and storm damage reduction. The study area was 8.6 miles of the Pacific coast, known as Ocean Beach, in the City of San Francisco, CA. The study area extended from Cliff House to Fort Funston. The beach portion of the study area is in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. Facilities threatened with damage included the Great Highway, parking lots of the GGNRA, a buried storm and sewer water transport box, a sewer pumping plant and ultimately houses and businesses. The report records the Ocean Engineering, Economic, and Geotechnical studies used to formulate and analyze a variety of alternative measures, including structural seawalls and revetments, as well as beach and dune nourishment. The final analysis indicated that most of the study area, while not absolutely safe, had a low probability of erosion. In the one area with a possible federal interest, the sponsor was unable to agree to cost share at the time of the report. Therefore the study was terminated. The sponsor will pursue other measures not requiring federal cost sharing.

Book excerpt: Relatively few Latino novels are published yearly in the United States. Now, from Rudy Apodaca comes When the Angels Came, a compelling story of a 12-year-old boy and of the old man who befriends him and a poignant narrative of their unparalleled friendship. The story begins in 1934, in west Texas, when Santiago Dominguez, as a six-year-old, loses his parents and is then raised by his loving uncle. Four years out of high school, as a Marine, Santiago finds himself fighting in Korea, where he’s injured and awarded the Silver Star for bravery. Two years later, in 1952, he moves to San Miguel, the “tiniest” of villages hidden along the Rio Grande in southern New Mexico. There, for many years, he lives a quiet and private life, earning a reputation as a good man but nonetheless a recluse. Being modest, he tells no one of his past. Not until 2011, when Jamie Almaguer moves into San Miguel with his parents, do the boy and Santiago, now 83 years old, meet. The old man is now known as Don Santiago, the title, a tribute of respect. Despite warnings from other youngsters to stay away from Don Santiago, “The Hermit,” as they call him, Jamie, by mere happenstance, meets the old man at a grocery store. From that chance meeting, the two begin a relationship that bonds them, despite their age difference. Don Santiago guides and comforts Jamie through difficulties in his young life, his first confrontation with racism, the sexual assault of his close friend, and the sudden illness of his mother. In time, Jamie comes to treasure Don Santiago, who molds him, providing the tools to tackle life’s issues. This, at a time most youngsters, often with considerable apprehension, are exploring the world around them and what living in it is all about. Ten years later, when a graduate student, Jamie makes his final entry in his journal, the spirit of Don Santiago within him. Above all else, Jamie writes, Don Santiago gave me what I considered the greatest gift anyone can give another. He believed in me. That can do much to invigorate and inspire the soul and the mind of a youngster just barely starting out in life.
