Book Cincinnati s Northside Neighborhood

Download or read book Cincinnati s Northside Neighborhood written by Dann Woellert and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cincinnati's Northside neighborhood rests in the amphitheater created by the Mill Creek and West Fork Creek. Settled in 1790, incorporated in 1865, and annexed in 1873, it was Cincinnati's first commuter suburb. Its colorful history from Native American days to the present is evidenced by its many names-Ludlow Station, Helltown, Happy Valley, Tanyard, and Cumminsville. The abolitionist sentiment made it a hotbed for Underground Railroad activity. A large German presence birthed its many beer gardens and saloons. Wealthy estate owners of Clifton and Avondale came to Frogtown to buy perennials for formal gardens. The fashion-conscious came to seek the large number of merchant tailors and milliners for their high-quality and contemporary styles. Beer drinkers sought Bruckman's Beer, fermented on the canal. The famous Crosley brothers started their empire in Northside. This Cincinnati neighborhood still sparkles today with the diversity and creativity of its past. Step back in time to see the stories that still make Cincinnati's Northside neighborhood such a vibrant and exciting community.

Book excerpt: From Northside Poetry: Growing up wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t hard. Mama just wanted me to be okay with my brothers, sisters and myself. All I wanted was to be okay with myself. I don’t need fame because fortune would be enough. . . . The people I’ve met in my life just heard me, but didn’t listen. If people just took the time to listen to our problems, there wouldn’t be problems with us today. It’s not about who is smarter or richer, it’s about who is ahead of the class and how long can you stay there, only the strong can survive. I still feel the same way as I did then, “Step on them or they will step on you!” But in my joyful times I’m the lion who sleeps, and the child in God’s eyes. My ladies and gentlemen, I don’t need you to gossip about me. Cause its still going on with my family. Or I don’t need a spotlight to determine who is the bad guy; I know who I am. Because we all have our own hell, and it’s killing me everyday thinking about mine. If only I could go back in time where I started it all I would, but I’m not God. And I’m living my life just as you, one day at a time. I wrote this letter and poetry to all those who I love and all that I hate. . . . Thank you for listening to my confessions and my cries at night.

Book excerpt: Northside Story, rich with affirmations and positive analogies that exist between nature and humanity, may help children cope with the struggles in their own lives. Northside Story is a unique twist on a timeless love story about two kids from opposite sides of the tracks. One is manor-raised on the south side, and the other struggles daily for survival on the north side of the gardeners shed. Nature provides the characters and the setting, which allows young children their first opportunity to understand lifes issues through the great outdoors. It offers them perspectives that can enhance their feelings of confidence and well-being. Ive used flowers and weeds and the landscape to teach lessons about love and acceptance. The story strives to introduce them to Pandoras final gifthope.

Book Appalachian Reckoning

Download or read book Appalachian Reckoning written by Anthony Harkins and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hillbilly elegy, J.D. Vance described how his family moved from poverty to an upwardly mobile clan while navigating the collective demons of the past. The book has come to define Appalachia for much of the nation. This collection of essays is a retort, at turns rigorous, critical, angry, and hopeful, to the long shadow cast over the region and its imagining. But it also moves beyond Vance's book to allow Appalachians to tell their own diverse and complex stories of a place that is at once culturally rich and economically distressed, unique and typically American. -- adapted from back cover
