Book Reaching for Health

Download or read book Reaching for Health written by Gwendolyn Gray Jamieson and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The women's health movement shocked and scandalised when it burst into Australian politics in the early 1970s. It cast the light of day onto taboo subjects such as sexual assault, abortion and domestic violence, provoking outrage and condemnation. Some of the services women created for themselves were subjected to police raids; sex education material was branded 'indecent'. Moreover, women dared to criticise revered institutions, such as the medical system. Yet for all its perceived radicalism, the movement was part of a much broader and relatively conventional international health reform push, which included the 'new' public health movement, the community health centre movement and, in Australia, the Aboriginal health movement, all of which were critical of the way medical systems had been organised during the 20th century. The women who joined the movement came from diverse backgrounds and included immigrant and refugee women, Aboriginal women and Anglo women. Initially, groups worked separately for the most part but as time went on, they found ways to cooperate and collaborate. This book presents an account of the ideas, the diverse and shared efforts and the enduring hard work of women's health activists, drawn together in one volume for the first time. This relentless activism gradually had an impact on public policy and slowly brought forth major attitudinal changes. The book also identifies the opportunities for health reform that were created along the way, opportunities which deserve to be more fully embraced.

Book excerpt: "This is an anthropological study of the culture of public health governance in the Northern Territory of Australia. It asks what it takes to become a helping white bureau-professional in Australias post-colonial frontier - someone who passionately cares about and resolutely strives toward improved health for Indigenous people and how their determination to help is sustained in the face of a self-declared history of failure."--Provided by publisher.

Book Health Social Change Communities

Download or read book Health Social Change Communities written by Pranee Liamputtong and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments, while concentrating on policy development and the pursuit of strategic approaches, have concurrently distanced themselves from the direct provision of services to become funders, not providers. Funding is provided to agencies, whether from the public or private sector, on the basis of the strength of their competitive tenders and the number of relevant organizations that they have included. The effects that these and other changes in the political and economic sectors have had on Australian society at the beginning of the 21st century are the concern of the authors of Health, Social Change and Communities. Since communities are both the recipients and the participants in health and social policy, the book is a sympathetic, but critical analysis of some of those community groups, and how they are faring in terms of health and social indicators. All of the chapters focus on the four main areas: An overview of current social, cultural or epidemiological perspectives relevant to the community and their members' health. Problems or issues in Australian society as reflective of wider international concerns. A discussion of relevant health policies and programs. Measures that can be taken to improve the health of selected groups in the community. Health, Social Change and Communities is written for readers who either have an interest or who are engaged in working with members of communities. With its presentation of diversity in communities, the book provides insights to enlighten and influence thinking about health and social policy.
