Book Northampton Fires and Firefighting

Download or read book Northampton Fires and Firefighting written by Joshua Shanley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settled not long after the Massachusetts Bay Colony and Plymouth, Europeans were living in Northampton, Massachusetts, by 1653. Throughout the early years, fire was a constant threat. And not long after the first fires destroyed buildings constructed of thatched roofs and wooden chimneys, townspeople organized a fire department. Although not officially established until 1857 after a spate of arson fires throughout the 1840s, the earliest fire protection equipment was purchased in 1792, comprised of buckets and hooks and ladders that were grabbed by anyone in town available to assist within earshot of the dreaded cry of "fire." By 1870, the Northampton Fire Department was comprised of four companies located in downtown, Florence, Bay State, and Leeds, each with hose wagons and hand tubs pulled by men before they were replaced by horse-drawn steam-powered engines and then motorized apparatus. Today, Northampton Fire Rescue responds to more than 3,000 calls each year, providing a variety of emergency services to the people of Northampton.

Book Birth of the Bravest

Download or read book Birth of the Bravest written by A. E. Costello and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-10-03 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They are called "the Bravest." They are the New York City Fire Department, ordinary men who put themselves on the line every day to save lives, and this is a chronicle of their early history. Birth of the Braves traces the history of New York firefighting from the earliest days of the city when it was part of the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam to the end of the nineteenth century when new innovations in firefighting technology began to make their appearance. Along the way are many tales of heroism and bravery, including accounts of the disastrous fire of 1811, the great conflagration of 1835, the awful fire of 1845, and many other signature events in New York City’s history. Birth of the Bravest also documents the history of firefighting itself, the birth and evolution of fire companies (both "volunteer and paid"), legislated fire regulations, the development of new equipment to aid the bravest in their mission, and the birth of fire insurance. Birth of the Bravest also tracks individual exploits of great heroism, on the job and off, as many members went off to serve in the Civil War. A seminal part of New York City history, the chronicle of the evolution of the Fire Department is an informative tribute to the men who are New York City's Bravest. Birth of the Bravest is a substantially abridged edition of Our Firemen -A History of the New York Fire Departments Volunteer and Paid by A. E. Costello which was originally published in 1887.

Book Firefighting in Bethlehem Pennsylvania 1741 1917

Download or read book Firefighting in Bethlehem Pennsylvania 1741 1917 written by Chris Eline and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through contemporary news accounts, archival records, and rare artifacts and photographs, Firefighting in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 1741¿1917tells the story of how a town battled the elements¿and won. The story begins with the bucket brigades of the Moravian community during the Colonialperiod, soon supplemented with two of the country¿s earliest fire engines. It tracks the parallel path of the town¿s expansion to the south and west and of the infrastructure improvements that made it possible. Each of the four boroughs that would eventually merge to form the modern City of Bethlehem¿Bethlehem, South Bethlehem, West Bethlehem, and Northampton Heights¿had its own fire department, made up mostly of volunteers, and its own logistical and financial challenges. Water supplies andwater pressure were unreliable, equipment frequently failed, funding was scarce, and unpaved streets were often impassable. This book illustrates how Bethlehem¿s early firefighters overcame each of these challenges and more with courage, humor, and camaraderie.
