Book excerpt: As the largest expenditure category of the health systems in both industrialised and developing countries, hospital care provision has been the focus of reforms over recent decades. This publication reviews recent trends in hospital policy reforms and options around the world; and includes case studies which offer insights into lessons learned. Issues considered include: differences in income levels, cultural settings and market environments; organisational changes such as increased management autonomy and privatisation; the need for parallel reforms and effective evaluation mechanisms.
Download or read book Doing Good written by J.T.H. Connor and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-12-15 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of Toronto’s general hospital offers a window on a broader history of Upper Canada and Ontario over the last two centuries. In this lively and authoritative account, J.T.H. Connor traces the hospital’s two-hundred-year evolution, as its mandate to ‘do good’ forced constant adjustment to changing social, medical, and government attitudes. Doing Good presents the hospital’s history in three phases – roughly speaking, the first and second halves of the nineteenth century, and the twentieth century. From its conception in 1797 to the mid-1850s – it did not actually acquire a home until 1819 nor occupy it until 1829 – it functioned as a charitable institution, catering to the sick poor. It acted initially as a clearing station for sick immigrants; it later was deeply affected by political events and became embroiled in the medical turmoil of Toronto in the 1840s and early 1850s. In the second era, from the mid-1850s, it was a public charity, receiving stable government funding and constructing a new home in eastern Toronto. By the 1870s, it was winning praise as a model hospital. In the twentieth century, it early on established close links with the University of Toronto, building a vast and up-to-date new facility adjacent to the university, which opened in 1913. Its international reputation as an academic hospital grew over the decades to include a high profile in research, most notably in cancer and medical technology. By the 1960s the institution was being run as a public hospital, and the late 1990s saw its absorption into a hospital mega-corporation – the University Health Network – along with three other nearby hospitals. This work is the most comprehensive analysis of any Canadian hospital or health care institution yet to appear. Using trustees’ minutes, medical journals, newspapers, and government reports, along with correspondence, photographs, and reminiscences of trustees, nurses, doctors, and patients, Connor offers acute observation and detailed analysis, as well as compelling character studies and revealing anecdotes. Broad in scope and meticulously executed, Doing Good brings vividly to life the day-to-day routines, the behind-the-scenes intrigue, and the people and politics of a great urban hospital.

Book excerpt: This book explores the changing role of the Parole Board. It pays particular attention to the effects of the early release scheme of the Criminal Justice Act 2005, which resulted in the Parole Board deciding in Panels to deteminate sentence prisoners, lifers, and recalled prisoners. A wide range of significant issues, and case law, has arisen as a result of these changes, which the contributors to this book, leading authorities in the field, aim to explore.
Download or read book Biodiversity of Malaria in the world written by Manguin Sylvie and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the present time, malaria is responsible for a million deaths a year, with 500 million reported cases of the disease and 2.5 billion people at risk of contracting it. The distribution and severity of the disease vary with the causative agents, vectors and environment. Of the 4 possible parasites, only P. falciparum causes fatal forms; the three others have debilitating effects related to frequent disease recurrence and reviviscence. More than 50 species of anophele are involved in the obligatory transmission of the parasite from man to man. Climate, environment and biogeography condition the distribution of anophele species and modulate the intensity of transmission. This is what is known as the biodiversity of malaria. At the present time, more than 90% of P. falciparum malaria deaths occur in tropical Africa where only 10% of the world's population lives. A child dies of malaria every 30 seconds. This continent is home to the most effective vectors and the climate favours transmission. Severe cases also arise in the forested areas of South East Asia, New Guinea and the Amazon region. Throughout the rest of the tropical and subtropical world, the disease caused by P. vivax and/or P. malariae is less serious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether childcare is seen as part of society's educational policy, welfare policy, or employment policy affects not only its form and content but also its public image. The contributors in this volume use current polices for the care of infants and preschool children to analyze debates and track the emergence of new state welfare practices across a variety of social and political configurations-and offer some conclusions about which methods work the best.
