Book A Book of North Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of North Wales Classic Reprint written by Sabine Baring-Gould and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of North Wales Concerning the purpose and scope of this little book I have but to repeat what I have said in the prefaces to my other works of the same nature - A Book of the I Vest, A Book of Dartmoor, A Book of Brittany - that it is not intended as a Guide, but merely as an introduction to North Wales, for the use of intending visitors, that they may know something of the history of that delightful land they are about to see. Welsh history is a puzzle to most Englishmen; accordingly I have made an attempt to simplify it sufficiently for the visitor to grasp its outlines. Without a knowledge of the history of a country in which one travels more than half its interest is lost. Dominion of the free! when from the chain Of foreign victors Britain's chiefs withdrew, Guarding with arm and life thy stern domain, Which round the heroes like a fortress grew, Secure 'mid towering cliff, or savage cave, Or tangled mazes of recesses deep, High o'er the foes they bade Defiance wave, And still the baffled chase o'er deserts sweep. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of South Wales His book is a companion to my Book qf North Wales. The purpose is the same - to give the visitor some idea of the history of the country in which he travels. To a Welshman there is, of course, in it nothing that he does not know already. But the average Englishman is singularly ignorant of the history of Wales and of the significance of its antiquities. I must tender my thanks to the Rev. J. Fisher, b.d., of Cei'n Rectory, S. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views in North Wales, From Original Drawings The Signs of a glacier are so evident in Cwm Llydaw that it is needless to describe all the details. At the outflow of the lake there are moraine-like mounds, formed of earthy matter, stones, and angular and subangular blocks, which even now partly dam up the lake, and when I first knew it, raised it to a still higher level, ere the channel of the brook was sacrilegiously deepened to lower the water, for the sake of saving a few pounds in the construction of an ugly causeway. Close to the outflow, the once beautiful little islets of rock, feathered with heath and grasses, are now united to the mainland, and a broad ugly black rim round the lake marks alike the extent of the drainage and the barbarism of the perpetrators of this unhappy outrage on the most beautiful scene in Wales.'
