Book excerpt: Eddie Hobbs has never been one to shy away from a challenge and his advice is that you shouldn't either! When the oil that we depend reaches scary prices, our lives are going to change utterly. This is going to happen much sooner than most of us want to admit and if we do not prepare for it, it's going to hit us where it hurts most: in our pockets. For years, Eddie Hobbs has been encouraging and supporting Irish people in getting to grips with our finances and now, in Energise, he gives us the tools to get to grips with the coming energy crisis and age of high inflation. In Energise he explains what you can do to prepare. You'll learn a range of strategies for managing your money so that wherever you are on the financial ladder - whether just waking up to the reality that you must take control of your finances, or wondering how your savings, pensions and investments are going to fare when the price of oil sky-rockets - you can survive and prosper during this age of high inflation. You'll also learn what Ireland needs to do to get ready for the energy crisis and what you can do to help raise public and political awareness. Eddie shows how, by taking control of your response to the new world order, you can prosper in unforeseen new ways. Energise is the essential starting point for getting to grips with the imminent age of scarcity.

Book Radical or Redundant

Download or read book Radical or Redundant written by Liam Weeks and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the type of small political party In Ireland has varied, their fate, it seems, has not. Although some enjoy a brief time in the sun, termination is the long-term prospects for all minor parties. The usual pattern is a speedy ascent, an impact on the political system including a time in government, followed by a prolonged termination. This book examines this pattern of evolution for minor, or small, parties in Irish politics. As the Irish state has changed, so too have the types of parties that have emerged. With the first-time entry of the Greens into government in 2007, their wipeout in 2011, the termination of the Progressive Democrats in 2009, and the failure of a new party to emerge despite the on-going financial crisis, the time is ripe for this analysis.

Book Irish Identities

Download or read book Irish Identities written by Raymond Hickey and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines in-depth the many facets of language and identity in the complex linguistic landscape of Ireland. The role of the heritage language Irish is scrutinized as are the manifold varieties of English spoken in regions of the island determined by both geography and social contexts. Language as a vehicle of national and cultural identity is center-stage as is the representation of identity in various media types and text genres. In addition, the volume examines the self-image of the Irish as reflected in various self-portrayals and references, e.g. in humorous texts. Identity as an aspect of both public and private life in contemporary Ireland, and its role in the gender interface, is examined closely in several chapters. This collection is aimed at both scholars and students interested in langage and identity in the milti-layered situation of Ireland, both historically and at present. By addressing general issues surrounding the dynamic and vibrant research area of identity it reaches out to readers beyond Ireland who are concerned with the pivotal role this factor plays in present-day societies.

Book Biotechnology Education and Life Politics

Download or read book Biotechnology Education and Life Politics written by Pádraig Murphy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should individuals and society do when genetic screening becomes widely available and with its impact on current and future generations still uncertain? How can our education systems around the world respond to these developments? Reproductive and genetic technologies (RGTs) are increasingly controversial and political. We are entering an era where we can design future humans, firstly, by genetic screening of "undesirable" traits or indeed embryos, but perhaps later by more radical genetic engineering. This has a profound effect on what we see as normal, acceptable and responsible. This book argues that these urgent and biopolitical issues should be central to how biology is taught as a subject. Debate about life itself has always been at the forefront of connected molecular, genetic and social/personal identity levels, and each of these levels requires processes of communication and debate, what Anthony Giddens called in passing life politics. In this book Pádraig Murphy opens the term up, with examples from field research in schools, student responses to educational films exploring the future of RGTs, and science studies of strategic biotechnology and the lab practices of genetic screening. Life political debate is thoroughly examined and is identified as a way of connecting mainstream education of biology with future generations. Biotechnology, Education and Life Politics will appeal to post-graduates and academics involved with science education, science communication, communication studies and the sociology of education.
