Book North Carolina Surveillance of Birth Defects Classic Reprint

Download or read book North Carolina Surveillance of Birth Defects Classic Reprint written by Lee A. Sullivan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Surveillance of Birth Defects Careful monitoring of birth defects is of special importance given that North Carolina had the tenth highest 1985 rate of infant mortality in the United States (1) and that for 1984 - 86 congenital anomalies were the most frequent underlying cause of death for infants up to one year of age (figure They were also the second most frequent for children one to four years of age (figure Congenital anomalies were the state's seventh leading cause of years of potential life lost (table accounting for percent of all such years. Public concern regarding the effects of drugs and environmental toxins and teratogens suggests the need for keen surveillance of the relationship between such products and congenital anomalies. Comparing state rates of anomaly to national benchmarks might clarify links between anomalies and various drugs, chemicals, and environmental contaminants, thus reducing the possibility of another thalidomide-like tragedy. Detection of such links might also provide early warning signals for diseases such as cancer, where the latency period is usually longer than that of a birth defect. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this course is to provide participants with the foundational skills needed to begin the development implementation and ongoing improvement of a congenital anomalies surveillance programme in particular for countries with limited resources. It focuses on the methodology needed to develop either population-based or hospitalbased surveillance programmes. A set of congenital anomalies will be used as examples throughout this course. The specific examples used are typically severe enough that they would probably be captured within the first few days after birth have a significant public health impact and for some of them have the potential for primary prevention. Target audience This course is designed for individuals who are directly involved in the development implementation and daily activities related to congenital anomalies surveillance programmes in their countries and who will directly teach others. Learning objectives By the end of this course participants will be able to: 1. describe how to use data for the development of prevention campaigns and policy/programme evaluation; 2. describe how to best present data to policy-makers; 3. identify selected major external congenital anomalies for monitoring; 4. describe the tools needed to ascertain and code congenital anomalies; 5. describe the processes for managing and analysing data; 6. demonstrate how to calculate the birth prevalence of congenital anomalies.
