Book Keys and Charts for California Species of Atriplex Classic Reprint

Download or read book Keys and Charts for California Species of Atriplex Classic Reprint written by Beryl O. Schreiber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Keys and Charts for California Species of Atriplex The key is based primarily on duration of the plant (annual or perennial), distribution, and vegetative characters, but in many cases it was necessary to resort to the fruiting bracts for the separation of species or subspecies. The accompanying charts present descriptions of each species in a manner in which they can be compared. The drawings which illustrate the leaf characters and bracts of each species and subspecies supplement the descriptions given in the charts, and the variations from the typical leaf or bract for each species have been included. It is to be noted that the fruiting bracts are usually long-persistent, but, when not present, remnants of these may be found by digging in the litter at the base of the plant. All of the distinguishing characters used in the key have been underlined in the charts in order to emphasize them. The keys, charts, and drawings are based primarily on H. M. Hall and F. E. Clements, The North American Species of Artemisia, Chrysothamnus, and Atriplex, (carnegie Inst. Wash. Publ. 326: 236-346, References were also made to W. L. Jepson, Manual of the Flowering Plants of California, and P. A. Munz, Manual of Southern California Botany. These have all been supplemented by a critical study of annotated specimens available in the U. C. Herbarium and specimens collected by the Vegetation Type Map Project.
