Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Used primarily as a long-range bomber escort in raids over Germany, the North American P-51 Mustang earned a reputation for toughness and agility in dogfights. Carrying a two-stage supercharged V-12 Merlin engine and armed with six .50 caliber machine guns, the P-51 helped the Allies gain air superiority in the skies over Europe. P-51s were flown by the famed Tuskegee Airmen, and remained in service during the Korean War. World airforces made extensive use of the Mustang, some into the 1980's. Originally published by North American Aviation and the U.S. Army Air Force in 1945, this manual was originally classified "Restricted." It was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted, and color images appear as black and white. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The F-82 ¿Twin Mustang¿ was conceived during WWII as a long-range fighter escort. Like the P-51, it was designed by North American's brilliant engineer, Edgar Schmued. The F-82 utilized two extended P-51 fuselages, mounted to a newly- designed center wing and tail. The plane incorporated new propeller assemblies and a unique, four-wheel landing gear. In short, while the plane would be cosmetically similar to the Mustang, in reality it was an entirely new beast. The F-82 wasn¿t ready before WWII ended, but the program escaped cancellation, and planes entered operational service in 1948. The F-82 became the last piston- powered fighter ordered by the USAF. It flew as an escort for SAC B-29s, and with distinction as a night fighter in Korea. It was retired in 1953. Originally printed by the USAF and North American, this pilot¿s handbook provides a glimpse inside the cockpit of this warbird. Originally classified ¿Restricted¿, the manual was de-classified and is here reprinted in book form.

Well-trained pilots flying superior new fighter aircraft against an enemy, losing its best pilots and unable to afford the luxury of extended training, brought about the inevitable defeat of the Axis air forces. This is their story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the waning days of World War II, a frenzied race was underway in rubble-strewn Europe as US and Soviet forces sought to seize advanced German weapons technology. Over the next quarter century the North American Aviation (NAA) would enhance these spoils of war into fearsome weapons in America's arsenal. There's the swept-wing F-86 Sabre jet fighter, which would go on to be the only Allied warplane to outmaneuver a Soviet MiG-15 over Korea. X-15 rocket planes carried humans to the boundaries of space, setting speed and altitude records that still hold today. The stories of these weapons and the engineers who nourished them is a fascinating look into postwar corporate history of the NAA and its impact on the United States' aviation and space history.
