Book excerpt: “A comprehensive look at the 272-plane F-82 fleet . . . This is a fine addition to Carey’s body of work and to anyone’s aviation library.”—HistoryNet One of the most unusual and remarkable American fighter aircraft, the F-82 Twin Mustang was the last mass production propeller-driven fighter acquired by the U.S. Air Force. Originally intended as a very long-range fighter escort for the Boeing B-29 Superfortress during World War II, it arrived too late to see combat and evolved into a night and all-weather fighter during the post-war years. Combat operations in the Korean War followed, along with a host of other dynamic episodes of deployment. This work traces the developmental, operational, and combat history of this unique American fighter and features 120 photographs and illustrations, many of which have never been published before. Seven chapters, all extensively illustrated, cover the aircraft’s development, descriptions of the variants and sub-types, details of initial entry into service, three chapters covering the F-82’s service in the Korean War, and a final chapter detailing the type’s removal from the Korean War Theatre in February 1952, to see out its operational days in the Alaskan Air Defense Command. “If you’re an historian like me, you’ll love this book. It lists every F-82 to serve in Korea, every crewman lost in combat, every squadron which used them, and all the pertinent tech details about each version. Photos illustrate the planes from nearly every squadron (if not all) and captions offer in-depth information not included in the text—so they really add value.”—My Hobby Info

Book The Cutting Edge

Download or read book The Cutting Edge written by Mark A. Lorell and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 1998-10-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposition that innovation is critical in the cost-effective design and development of successful military aircraft is still subject to some debate. RAND research indicates that innovation is promoted by intense competition among three or more industry competitors. Given the critical policy importance of this issue in the current environment of drastic consolidation of the aerospace defense industry, the authors here examine the history of the major prime contractors in developing jet fighters since World War II. They make use of an extensive RAND database that includes nearly all jet fighters, fighter-attack aircraft, and bombers developed and flown by U.S. industry since 1945, as well as all related prototypes, modifications, upgrades, etc. The report concludes that (1) experience matters, because of the tendency to specialize and thus to develop system-specific expertise; (2) yet the most dramatic innovations and breakthroughs came from secondary or marginal players trying to compete with the industry leaders; and (3) dedicated military R&D conducted or directly funded by the U.S. government has been critical in the development of new higher-performance fighters and bombers.

Book American Military Training Aircraft

Download or read book American Military Training Aircraft written by E.R. Johnson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. did not become the world's foremost military air power by accident. The learning curve--World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and more recently the war on terror--has been steep. While climbing this curve, the U.S. has not only produced superior military aircraft in greater numbers than its foes, but has--in due course--out-trained them, too. This book provides a comprehensive historical survey of U.S. military training aircraft, including technical specifications, drawings and photographs of each type of fixed and rotary-wing design used over a 98-year period to accomplish the first step of the learning process: the training of pilots and aircrews.

Book excerpt: This is the true account of one of America's greatest aircraft producers, North American Aviation: its rise and its fall. It is the story of its only two CEOs: "Dutch" Kindelberger and Lee Atwood. One would oversee its rise, and the other would oversee its fall across the tumultuous backdrop of the Age of Flight. The real reason for the fall may never be known, but some of those involved share their viewpoints in this book. The story provides perspective on why things happened, shares anecdotes about the people and the airplanes, and what both did for aviation. Their achievements and what they represent in our imagination is the stuff of legend. We hope all of our readers-aviation buffs, historians, and future CEOs-gain an insight into the effort, rewards, and pitfalls that lie along the path to achieving great things.Warren E. Thompson. Military Aviation Historian, says of North American Aviation: The Rise and Fall of an Aerospace Giant, "John Casey was in upper management positions with North American Aviation from 1941 until he retired in 1968. His knowledge of the aviation manufacturing business during World War II and the early years of the Cold War with the Soviet Union is second to none. He has written several books, and this one is the best yet. His book could fit the profile of just about any aerospace giant that has disappeared over the past 40+ years. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in aviation."

He also describes the construction of megafactories like Willow Run, factory design considerations, and the postwar conversion back to peacetime production. Illustrated with 175 period photographs—including 50 rare color photos never before seen in print.

Download or read book Warbird Factory written by John M. Fredrickson and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the WWII history of the company that later became a part of Boeing and made more aircraft from 1938 to 1944 than any other company in the United States. During World War II, Los Angeles was the ultimate boom town. By the end of the war, the L.A. area had produced 17 percent of all of America's war needs. North American Aviation, Inc. (NAA), operating out of their main Inglewood, California, plant, which is south of and adjacent to the city, was a key player in that work. From 1938 to 1944, NAA built over 40,000 aircraft, more than any other company in the United States. The bulk of them were of three iconic types designed by NAA: - The P-51 Mustang, arguably the best fighter of WWII. - B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, which saw worldwide combat. - Two-seat military pilot trainers, such as the AT-6 Texan. This is a fascinating story of a remarkable time in aviation history, when American businesses helped fund the arsenal of democracy that helped defeat the Axis powers. Warbird Factory tells this story with over 200 photographs, many of which come directly from the NAA/Boeing archives, where they have resided since WWII. This is an essential book for anyone interested in warbirds, aviation, Boeing/NAA, WWII, and/or the history of Southern California!

Book North American XB 70 Valkyrie

Download or read book North American XB 70 Valkyrie written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many futuristic military aircraft concepts created in the 1950s the North American XB-70 still stands out as the most awe-inspiring. With its huge, white partially-folding delta wing, its fuselage resembling a striking cobra and its extraordinary performance, it was one of the foremost technological achievements of the 20th Century. A strategic bomber built to outrun any Soviet fighter jet, it could reach Mach 3 with a full nuclear payload - as fast as the legendary SR-71 Blackbird but more than three times the size. However, its role as a nuclear bomber was limited after the introduction of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, and defence cuts eventually led to the project being scrapped in the mid-1960s. The Valkyrie had a brief, costly decade of life but it proved the continuing value of developing manned bombers. However, almost half a century after the XB-70 its predecessor, the B-52, continues in service. Using full colour artwork and rigorous analysis, this is the complete story of the ultimate US Cold War military X-plane.

Book Valkyrie the North American XB 70

Download or read book Valkyrie the North American XB 70 written by Graham M. Simons and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating insight into one of the Cold War’s most interesting concept aircraft . . . [with] new information, photographs and first-hand accounts.” —Flypast During the 1950s, plans were being drawn at North American Aviation in Southern California for an incredible Mach-3 strategic bomber. The concept was born as a result of General Curtis LeMay’s desire for a heavy bomber with the weapon load and range of the subsonic B-52 and a top speed in excess of the supersonic medium bomber, the B-58 Hustler. However, in April 1961, Defense Secretary McNamara stopped the production go-ahead for the B-70 because of rapid cost escalation and the USSR’s newfound ability to destroy aircraft at extremely high altitude using either missiles or the new Mig-25 fighter. Nevertheless, in 1963 plans for the production of three high-speed research aircraft were approved and construction proceeded. In September 1964 the first Valkyrie, now re-coded A/V-1, took to the air for the first time and in October went supersonic. This book is the most detailed description of the design, engineering and research that went into this astounding aircraft. It is full of unpublished details, photographs and firsthand accounts from those closely associated with the project. Although never put into full production, this giant six-engined aircraft became famous for its breakthrough technology, and the spectacular images captured on a fatal air-to-air photo shoot when an observing Starfighter collided with Valkyrie A/V-2 which crashed into the Mojave Desert. “Well-illustrated with numerous diagrams and black and white photographs, the book provides an interesting insight into one of the so-called ‘white elephant’ projects of the 1960s.” —Jets Monthly
