Book excerpt: The most careless reader can hardly fail to see that many of the Tales in this volume have the same groundwork as those with which he has been familiar from his earliest youth. They are Nursery Tales, in fact, of the days when there were tales in nurseries-old wives' fables, which have faded away before the light of gas and the power of steam. (Excerpt from Popular Tales from the Norse.) First Page: POPULAR TALES FROM THE NORSE By SIR GEORGE WEBBE DASENT WITH AN INTRODUCTORY ESSAY ON THE ORIGIN AND DIFFUSION OF POPULAR TALES Notice to the Second Edition The first edition of these Tales being exhausted, and a demand having arisen for a second, the Translator has thought it right to add thirteen tales, which complete the translation of Asbjornsen and Moe's collection, and to strengthen the Introduction by working in some new matter, and by working out some points which were only slightly sketched in the first edition. In order to overcome language and dialect difficulties, the two modeled their style after the Brothers Grimm. The stories were originally published in pamphlets, but by 1870 the current collection was published, and the entire work was translated by Sir George Webbe Dasent, a professor of English literature and modern history at Kings College London. Asbjørnsen and Moe called his work "the best and happiest rendering of our tales that has appeared." These simple yet charming stories are a treat for both children and adults, full of giants, trolls, heroes and princesses. The stories include: "East O' The Sun and West O' The Moon," "Taming the Shrew," "The Master Thief," "The Widow's Son," "The Three Billy-goats Gruff" and many others.
