Book Numerical Modeling of Ocean Dynamics

Download or read book Numerical Modeling of Ocean Dynamics written by Zygmunt Kowalik and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are several excellent books dealing with numerical analysis and analytical theory, one has to practically sift through hundreds of references. This monograph is an attempt to partly rectify this situation. It aims to introduce the application of finite-difference methods to ocean dynamics as well as review other complex methods. Systematically presented, the monograph first gives a detailed account of the basics and then go on to discuss the various applications. Recognising the impossibility of covering the entire field of ocean dynamics, the writers have chosen to focus on transport equations (diffusion and advection), shallow water phenomena ? tides, storm surges and tsunamis, three-dimensional time dependent oceanic motion, natural oscillations, and steady state phenomena. The many aspects covered by this book makes it an indispensable handbook and reference source to both professionals and students of this field.

Book Modern Approaches to Data Assimilation in Ocean Modeling

Download or read book Modern Approaches to Data Assimilation in Ocean Modeling written by P. Malanotte-Rizzoli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-05-10 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of oceanographic data assimilation is now well established. The main area of concern of oceanographic data assimilation is the necessity for systematic model improvement and ocean state estimation. In this respect, the book presents the newest, innovative applications combining the most sophisticated assimilation methods with the most complex ocean circulation models.Ocean prediction has also now emerged as an important area in itself. The book contains reviews of scientific oceanographic issues covering different time and space scales. The application of data assimilation methods can provide significant advances in the understanding of this subject. Also included are the first, recent developments in the forecasting of oceanic flows.Only original articles that have undergone full peer review are presented, to ensure the highest scientific quality. This work provides an excellent coverage of state-of-the-art oceanographic data assimilation.

Book Lanczos Algorithms for Large Symmetric Eigenvalue Computations

Download or read book Lanczos Algorithms for Large Symmetric Eigenvalue Computations written by Jane K. Cullum and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this book presents background material, descriptions, and supporting theory relating to practical numerical algorithms for the solution of huge eigenvalue problems. This book deals with 'symmetric' problems. However, in this book, 'symmetric' also encompasses numerical procedures for computing singular values and vectors of real rectangular matrices and numerical procedures for computing eigenelements of nondefective complex symmetric matrices. Although preserving orthogonality has been the golden rule in linear algebra, most of the algorithms in this book conform to that rule only locally, resulting in markedly reduced memory requirements. Additionally, most of the algorithms discussed separate the eigenvalue (singular value) computations from the corresponding eigenvector (singular vector) computations. This separation prevents losses in accuracy that can occur in methods which, in order to be able to compute further into the spectrum, use successive implicit deflation by computed eigenvector or singular vector approximations.
