Download or read book State of biodiversity in the Nordic countries written by Bo Normander and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic countries have agreed on a common target to halt the decline in biodiversity by 2010. This report aims at evaluating the 2010-target by presenting indicators that can describe trends in biodiversity in the Nordic countries. Our results comprise the most comprehensive documentation of land use in the Nordic countries to date. The area of important nature types such as mire, grassland and heathland have decreased significantly over the past one to two decades, whereas the area of constructed habitats, including city areas and transport networks, has grown considerably in all of the Nordic countries. Each of these trends in land use will cause biodiversity to decline. Looking into the quality aspect of biodiversity, our results reveal that two-thirds of the quality indicators presented show declines and the remaining one-third show improvements (or steady-state). Overall, our results indicate that biodiversity has declined in the Nordic countries since 1990. In particular, farmland, mire, grassland and heathland habitats show declines in biodiversity, but also the remaining habitats show negative trends. Therefore, based on the findings from this study, we conclude that it is highly unlikely that the target of halting biodiversity loss by 2010 can be achieved by the Nordic countries. Our results should be perceived as a first attempt to make an overall assessment of biodiversity in the Nordic countries. We believe that if further efforts were directed towards scrutinising existing and historic monitoring programmes and data sources, additional indicators could be calculated and hence a better knowledge base would be achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic welfare states are facing new challenges in an increasingly globalised world. Fiercer competition has underlined the need for the Nordics to enhance competitiveness - and to support and nurse growth in industry and businesses. This report presents the key findings and policy recommendations of the project "Nordic Growth Sectors." Having identified growth companies in the Nordics, the project analyses growth drivers, the match between supply and demand of labour, the work environment in the companies, and growth and other companies' perceptions of existing framework conditions and improvement needs. Based on the analyses and on a Nordic Policy Forum held in Copenhagen with participation of policymakers from the central administrations, labour market organisations, universities and growth companies, a set of policy recommendations are developed, the most important of which are to Introduce: (i) More flexible retirement schemes; (ii) Diminish international recruitment red tape; (iii) Prepare graduates better for employment; (iv) Create national work environment "barometers"; (v) Introduce more flexible child care facilities; (vi) Carry out cost-benefit analysis of complex regulation

This includes a review of historical developments within the sales of organic foods and beverages across the main sales channels, imports/exports and organic agricultural production. Furthermore, we give an overview of political incentives in the area of organic food, consumer profiles and attitudes, and provide an outlook on the future trends and expected developments within the Nordic countries. The report also includes an outlook for the Nordic region and globally towards 2030. Lastly, the report includes a link between organic food and the UN’s 2030 sustainability agenda and how the individual countries incorporate organic into their national strategies towards 2030. The market analysis covers the following countries: • Nordic countries: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland • Autonomous areas: The Faroe Islands, Åland Islands and Greenland • Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania The market analysis is part of the project ”Nordic Nutrition the Green Way”, which aims at bringing together the Nordic and Baltic authorities and relevant private stakeholders in the field of organic production and consumption. The project addresses the idea of a sustainable and healthy diet for the population and strengthening the Nordic-Baltic identity on sustainability and branding of a greener and more organic Nordic-Baltic region.

Download or read book How can the Nordic mix of policy instruments become more effective written by Pedersen, Jakob Louis and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2021-539/ The Nordic economies are strongly integrated but have chosen different pathways and climate policy instruments to reduce their climate impact. Therefore, the Nordic economic actors have different incentives, even though they operate in the same integrated markets. This can lead to negative spill-over effects on neighbouring countries. This report presents examples of such negative effects within transportation, waste management, energy production. Following an analysis of these, the report identifies a series of barriers for the countries to avoiding the counterproductive, spill-over effects. The report concludes by summing up recommendations for possible improvements the Nordic collaboration. The report has been prepared by COWI. It has included a desk study, stakeholder interviews and two cross-Nordic workshops to verify the findings and identify Nordic challenges and opportunities
Download or read book How climate policies impact gender and vice versa in the Nordic countries written by Lander Svendsen, Nina and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2022-507/ The Nordic countries have a progressive gender policy, and requirements to ensure gender equality and balance are laid down in laws and national strategies. However, the knowledge on the links between gender and climate change has been lacking documentation and has not been shared with relevant Nordic stakeholders and policy makers. The report seeks to close this knowledge gap. It provides a comprehensive understanding of how climate change policies affect gender and vice versa, and it is clear evidence of the importance of- and need to engage women and minorities in climate policy making. This is an important step towards implementing a climate change policy without negative effects on gender. The study gives an overview of existing and lacking sex-disaggregated data as well as a status regarding gender equality in decision-making related to climate policy in the Nordic countries.
