Book Rites of Ordination and Commitment in the Churches of the Nordic Countries

Download or read book Rites of Ordination and Commitment in the Churches of the Nordic Countries written by Hans Raun Iversen and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique situation exists in the Nordic countries where there is a Lutheran majority living in ecumenical cooperation with other churches and ecclesiastical communities. This book attempts to shed light on what the churches have discovered they hold in common and on areas where they recognise that there are divergencies between them, both in relation to ordination and ministry, and in particular to the theology and terminology of ordination. The book brings together the research and insights of 23 researchers from all the Nordic countries studying more than 200 different kinds of 'ordination' rites from the Orthodox and Roman Catholic as well as Lutheran and non-Lutheran protestant traditions. After an introduction to the churches in the Nordic countries, the book presents 19 case studies from the Nordic countries. The last part includes some general ecumenical and liturgical perspectives on ordination and rites presented by international researchers.

Book Scandinavia in the Age of Revolution

Download or read book Scandinavia in the Age of Revolution written by Pasi Ihalainen and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Age of Revolution' is a term seldom used in Scandinavian historiography, despite the fact that Scandinavia was far from untouched by the late eighteenth-century revolutions in Europe and America. Presenting the latest research on political culture in Scandinavia, this volume with twenty-seven contributions focuses on four key aspects: the crisis of monarchy; the transformation in political debate; the emerging influence of commercial interest in politics; and the shifting boundaries of political participation. Generously illustrated throughout, this book will introduce non-Scandinavian readers to developments in the Nordic countries during the late-eighteenth and early nineteenth-centuries and both complement and challenge research into the political cultures of Europe and America.

Book Kierkegaard s Influence on Theology Anglophone and Scandinavian Protestant theology

Download or read book Kierkegaard s Influence on Theology Anglophone and Scandinavian Protestant theology written by Jon Bartley Stewart and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tome II is dedicated to tracing Kierkegaard's influence in Anglophone and Scandinavian Protestant religious thought. In Britain, before World War I, the few literati who were familiar with his work tended to assimilate Kierkegaard to the heroic individualism of Ibsen and Nietzsche. In the United States knowledge of Kierkegaard was introduced by Scandinavian immigrants who brought with them a picture of the Dane as much more sympathetic to traditional Christianity. The interpretation of Kierkegaard in Britain and America during the early and mid-twentieth century generally reflected the sensibilities of the particular theological interpreter. Anglican theologians tended to find Kierkegaard to be one-sided in his critique of reason and culture, while theologians hailing from the Reformed tradition often saw him as an insightful harbinger of neo-orthodoxy. The second part of Tome II is dedicated to the Kierkegaard reception in Scandinavian theology, featuring articles on Norwegian and Swedish theologians influenced by Kierkegaard.

With a rich blend of history, jurisprudence, and real-world examples, this book paints a comprehensive picture of how speech has been shaped, celebrated, and suppressed since the founding of America. Ever wondered about the intentions of the Founding Fathers when they penned the First Amendment? Or how landmark cases over the centuries have redefined its interpretation? From the early American media's struggles with censorship to the rise of digital platforms, discover the evolution of speech boundaries and the forces that have constantly sought to redraw them. Understand when speech crosses the line into crime, from threats and extortion to false advertising and copyright infringement. And for those moments when you find yourself walking on the eggshells of culturally sensitive speech, this book offers guidance on navigating those murky waters. Moreover, in a world where the line between private censorship and public responsibility is increasingly blurred, "Walls of Words" challenges readers to reflect on the ethical implications of speech boundaries. How do we balance tolerance with limitation? What role do private entities play in shaping the discourse? And as technology continues to transform the landscape of expression, what challenges lie ahead for the future of free speech? Whether you're a student, a legal enthusiast, or just a curious mind, "Walls of Words" promises an enlightening journey through the ever-evolving wall of words that defines our collective responsibility to uphold the spirit of free speech. Book The free speech wars

Download or read book The free speech wars written by Charlotte Lydia Riley and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who gets to exercise free speech, and what happens when powerful voices think they have been silenced? Assembling a diverse group of commentators, activists and academics, this book explores the contemporary free speech wars to try to understand how this issue has become increasingly charged. It asks how the spaces and structures of 'speech' – mass media, the lecture theatre, the public event, the political rally and the internet – shape this debate. The contributors examine how acts such as censorship, boycotts, and protests around free speech developed historically and how these histories inform the present. The book explores the opposing sides in this debate: beginning with a defence of speech freedoms and examining how speech has been curbed and controlled, before countering this with an exploration of the way that free speech has been weaponised and deployed as a bad faith argument by people wishing to commit harm. Considering two key battlefields in the free speech wars – the university campus and the internet – this book encourages the reader to be suspicious of the way that this topic is framed in the media today. The free speech wars offers context, provocation, stimulation and – hopefully – a route through this conflict.

Book Democracy of Expression

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew T. Kenyon
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2021-06-17
  • ISBN : 1108786022
  • Pages : 293 pages

Download or read book Democracy of Expression written by Andrew T. Kenyon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free speech has positive dimensions of enablement and negative dimensions of non-restraint, both of which require protection for democracy to have substantial communicative legitimacy. In Democracy of Expression, Andrew Kenyon explores this need for sustained plural public speech linked with positive communicative freedom. Drawing on sources from media studies, human rights, political theory, free speech theory and case law, Kenyon shows how positive dimensions of free speech could be imagined and pursued. While recognising that democratic governments face challenges of public communication and free speech that cannot be easily solved, Kenyon argues that understanding the nature of these challenges (including the value of positive free speech) at least makes possible a democracy of expression in which society has a voice, formulates judgments, and makes effective claims of government. In this groundbreaking work, Kenyon not only reframes how we conceptualize free speech, but also provides a roadmap for reform.
