Download or read book Electricity Network Regulation in the EU written by Leonardo Meeus and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK model of incentive regulation of power grids was at one time the most advanced, and elements of it were adopted throughout the EU. This model worked well, particularly in the context of limited investment and innovation, a single and strong regulatory authority, and limited coordination between foreign grid operators. This enlightening book shows that since 2010 the whole context has changed and regulation has had to catch-up and evolve. The EU is entering a wave of investment, and an era of new services and innovation which has created growing tensions between national regulatory authorities in terms of coordinating technical standards and distribution systems. This is being played out against an increasingly disruptive backdrop of digitzation, new market platforms and novel business models.

Download or read book Handbook on Geopolitics and Security in the Arctic written by Joachim Weber and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of climate change and tectonic political shifts in world politics, this handbook provides an overview of the most crucial geopolitical and security related issues in the Arctic. It discusses established shareholder's policies in the Arctic – those of Russia, Canada, the USA, Denmark, and Norway – as well as the politics and interests of other significant or future stakeholders, including China and India. Furthermore, it explains the economic situation and the legal framework that governs the Arctic, and the claims that Arctic states have made in order to expand their territories and exclusive economic zones. While illustrating the collaborative approach, represented by institutions such as the Arctic council, which has often been described as an exceptional institution in this region, the contributing authors examine potential resource and power conflicts between Arctic nations, due to competing interests. The authors also address topics such as changing alliances between Arctic nations, new sea lines of communication, technological shifts, and eventually the return to power politics in the area. Written by experts on international security studies and the Arctic, as well as practitioners from government institutions and international organizations, the book provides an invaluable source of information for anyone interested in geopolitical shifts and security issues in the High North.
Download or read book A common Nordic end user market written by Berit Tennbakk and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementation of the Energy Efficiency Directive in the Nordic countries may affect the development of a common Nordic end-user market in electricity. As the period up to 2020 is too short to develop harmonized energy efficiency policy measures, we expect to see a continuation of a system of current national measures to promote energy efficiency in the Nordic countries. Generally, non-harmonized policy instruments do not need to counteract competition in a common end-user market as long as the suppliers are not given a specific role in managing energy efficiency schemes. Hence, adverse effects on cross-border competition may be mitigated by avoiding obligations on suppliers or by harmonizing such obligations among the Nordic countries.

Download or read book Unleashing the Power of European Innovation written by Fred Bakker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is at a critical juncture where our industrial and economic principles have to be reshaped. Three major transitions are underway: towards the use of alternative energy sources, towards carbon-neutral and sustainable production, and towards digitalised manufacture and distribution. This book explores the ways in which these transitions are taking place in Europe. No single institution can bring about the necessary changes: a productive cooperation between government, industry and (technological) knowledge centres has to be established. In this insightful book, Fred Bakker paints a vivid picture of a wide range of European businesses, industries and research institutes, joining forces to further the transitions. This process of ‘Sharing Brainpower’ proves to be a unique European strength that needs to be recognised and furthered. Structured in five parts, the book provides a thumbnail sketch of Europe’s goals and methods, through a bird’s eye view across current initiatives towards the three transitions, to a concluding part in which the workings of Sharing Brainpower are described in terms of a set of ‘lessons learned’. It shows how top-down initiatives and the bottom-up approach reinforce one another, with case stories that prove that diversity does not have to mean fragmentation; it is a source of strength. Policymakers, industry advisers, board members, chief innovation officers and students will find much to inspire them and their work in this book. A website with cases, updates and more information is available at sharingbrainpower.eu.
Download or read book Economies that Mimic Life written by Joseph H. Bragdon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world economy today is at an historical inflection point. The neoclassical (industrial) model of economics is self-destructing while a new life-mimicking model, based on radically different assumptions, is emerging. Although rarely acknowledged in economic journals, Nordic countries, which pioneered the life-mimicking model, have become world leaders in prosperity and productivity while those operating on the older neoclassical/industrial model are trapped in downward spirals. By approaching economies as sub-systems of life rather than super-systems that transcend life, we gain transformative insights. Such thinking led to the first circular economy experiments in Kalundborg (Denmark) during the 1970s, then quickly spread to the rest of the Nordic world. By placing a higher value on living assets (people and Nature) than on non-living capital assets, this approach generates harmony rather than exploitation and conflict. Because Nordic people feel vested in the system and responsible for its success, they are extraordinarily innovative and productive. That is why Nordic companies are regularly rated among the world’s most sustainable and profitable in their fields – even though their region holds less than half of one percent of the world’s population. Written in an accessible way for non-economists, the book is ideal for readers interested in the benefits of biomimicry and methods of guiding democratic countries along a proven path of self-renewal. Economies That Mimic Life will also provide useful background for corporate leaders in scenario planning and strategic thinking. Knowing which way the political-economic wind is blowing will become increasingly important to corporate survival.
