Download or read book Nonsense Botany and Nonsense Alphabets Etc Etc written by Edward Lear and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Lear's poetry and prose celebrates the joy of living, and has influenced writers and illustrators from Terry Gilliam to Spike Milligan and Ricky Gervais. Although the subject and form of his works varies greatly, all of Lear's poems can be characterized by his irreverent view of the world, and many critics view Lear's nonsense books as his way of undermining the all-pervasive orderliness and industriousness of Victorian society. However, regardless of his inspiration or impetus, the appeal of Lear's poems and illustrations has proved timeless. Nonsense Botany and Nonsense Alphabets contains illustrations and pictorial depictions from Lear's incredible imagination of plants and creatures, with appropriate captions and lyrics. His strange botanical illustrations include Manypeeplia Upsidownia, Piggiwiggia Pyramidalis, and Pollybirdia Singularis, whilst the "Nonsense Alphabets" consist of three sets of illustrated alphabets which twist and turn around the most bizarre imagery and language.

Download or read book 100 Nineteenth century Rhyming Alphabets in English from the Library of Ruth M Baldwin written by Ruth Marie Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The library of Ruth M. Baldwin contains, at the present time, about 35,000titles and editions of children's books in English, all before 1900and mostly from the nineteenth century. Though a small part of the outpouring of children's books in English in the nineteenth century--estimated to be as much as a quarter of a million volumes--her library is probably unique in its equal representation of American and English children's books. How many of the books published were rhyming alphabets is difficult to say. These hundred books presented here, certainly a small part of the whole, bear publication dates around the early part of the second half of the century, and represent the whole century well, for true children's book publishing did not precede this by much. Children and readers in general as well as students of children's literature should find this book of books interesting. The alphabets reproduced here are included in their entirety, many of them in color, and are grouped thematically under such topics as nature, animals, and farm life.
