Book Nonlinear Physical Phenomena Proceedings Of The International Centre Of Condensed Matter Physics School

Download or read book Nonlinear Physical Phenomena Proceedings Of The International Centre Of Condensed Matter Physics School written by Alvaro Ferraz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1990-11-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-linear effects are basically manifested in a variety of physical phenomena such as defect mediated transitions, pattern formation, growth of aggregates, turbulence, chemical reactions, diffusion in porous media, biological information processing, etc. Many non-linear dynamical systems are extremely sensitive to small changes in the initial conditions. Different routes to chaos have been established and a new geometry, called fractal geometry, has been developed. The aim of this School is to review the main achievements of the modern theory of irregular structures and to discuss the exciting new trends in non-linear phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years one has witnessed in physics a substantial increase in interest in carrying out fundamental studies in the nonlinear optics of condensed matter. At the Danish universities, this increase has been especially pronounced at the Institute of Physics at the University of Aalborg, where the main activities are centered around fundamental research within the domains of nonlinear quantum optics, nonlinear optics of metals and superconductors, and nonlinear surface optics. In recognition of this it was decided to arrange the first international summer school on nonlinear optics in Denmark at the Institute of Physics at the University of Aalborg. This book is based on the lectures and contributed papers presented at this international summer school, which was held in the period 31 July-4 Au gust 1989. About 60 experienced and younger scientists from 12 different countries participated. Twenty-eight lectures were given by 14 distinguished scientists from the United States, Italy, France, Germany, Scotland, England, and Denmark. In addition to the lectures given by the invited speakers, 11 contributed papers were presented. The programme of the summer school em phasized a treatment of basic physical properties of the nonlinear interaction of light and condensed matter and both theoretical and experimental aspects were covered. Furthermore, general principles as well as topics of current interest in the research literature were discussed.

Download or read book Disorder and Nonlinearity written by Alan R. Bishop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ill the past three decades there has been enonnous progress in identifying the es sential role that "nonlinearity" plays in physical systems. Classical nonlinear wave equations can support localized, stable "soliton" solutions, and nonlinearities in quantum systems can lead to self-trapped excitations, such as polarons. Since these nonlinear excitations often dominate the transport and response properties of the systems in which they exist, accurate modeling of their effects is essential to interpreting a wide range of physical phenomena. Further, the dramatic de velopments in "deterministic chaos", including the recognition that even simple nonlinear dynamical systems can produce seemingly random temporal evolution, have similarly demonstrated that an understanding of chaotic dynamics is vital to an accurate interpretation of the behavior of many physical systems. As a conse quence of these two developments, the study of nonlinear phenomena has emerged as a subject in its own right. During these same three decades, similar progress has occurred in understand ing the effects of "disorder". Stimulated by Anderson's pioneering work on "dis ordered" quantum solid state materials, this effort has also grown into a field that now includes a variety of classical and quantum systems and treats "disorder" arising from many sources, including impurities, random spatial structures, and stochastic applied fields. Significantly, these two developments have occurred rather independently, with relatively little overlapping research.

Book Statics and Dynamics of Nonlinear Systems

Download or read book Statics and Dynamics of Nonlinear Systems written by Giorgio Benedek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of the properties of nonlinear systems is one of the fast deve loping areas of physics. In condensed matter physics this 'terra incognita' is approached from various starting points such as phase transitions and renormali zation group theory, nonlinear models, statistical mechanics and others. The study of the mutual interrelations of these disciplines is important in developing uni fying methods and models towards a better understanding of nonlinear systems. The present book collects the lectures and seminars delivered at the workshop on "Statics and Dynamics of Nonlinear Systems" held at the Centre for SCientific Culture "Ettore Majorana·" in Erice;· Italy, July 1 to 11, 1983, in the framework of the International School of Materials Science and Technology. Experts and young researchers came together to discuss nonlinear phenomena in condensed matter physics. The book is divided into five parts, each part containing a few general artic les introducing the subject, followed by related specialized papers. The first part deals with basic properties of nonlinear systems including an introduction to the general theoretical methods. Contrfbutions to the nonlinear aspects of phase transitions are collected in the second part. In the third part properties of incommensurate systems are discussed. Here, competing interactions lead to charge-density waves, soliton lattices and other complex structures. Another point of special interest, illustrated in the fourth part, is the 'chaotic' be havior of various systems such as Josephson junctions and discrete lattices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume III/28 is a supplement to volume III/16a+b Ferroelectrics and Related Substances. It also consists of two parts a and b. The present subvolume III/28a contains data on ferroelectric oxides, supplementing III/16a which appeared in 1981. Subvolume III/28b, due in 1990, will cover non-oxides, supplementing III/16b (published in 1982). Reliable data on both pure compounds and solid solutions, published mostly between 1978 and 1986 and some data from the literature up to early 1988 are critically evaluated and included. The dielectric and ferroelectric behaviour, as well as all other properties relevant to the characterization of these substances are presented in tables and figures. About 22,000 references have been surveyed with the aid of a computer. All values are given in SI units. Rapid localization of the required data is facilitated by an alphabetical index of substances and a two-dimensional survey of substances and properties dealt with in both subvolumes III/28a and III/16a.

Book Recent Trends in Theory of Physical Phenomena in High Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Recent Trends in Theory of Physical Phenomena in High Magnetic Fields written by Israel D. Vagner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive collection of papers on theoretical aspects of electronic processes in simple and synthetic metals, superconductors, bulk and low-dimensional semiconductors under extreme conditions, such as high magnetic and electric fields, low and ultra-low temperatures. The main emphasis is on low-dimensional conductors and superconductors, where correlated electrons, interacting with magnetic or nonmagnetic impurities, phonons, photons, or nuclear spins, result in a variety of new physical phenomena, such as quantum oscillations in the superconducting state, Condon instability, Skyrmions and composite fermions in quantum Hall effect systems, and hyperfine field-induced mesoscopic and nanoscopic phenomena. Several new experimental achievements are reported that promise to delineate future trends in low temperature and high magnetic field physics, including the experimental observation of the interplay between superconductivity and nuclear spin ordering at ultra-low temperatures, new observations of Condon domains in normal metals, and an experimental proposal for the realisation of isotopically engineered, semiconductor-based spin-qubit elements for future quantum computation and communication technology.
