Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we derive a model of aggregate investment that builds from the lumpy microeconomic behavior of firms facing stochastic fixed adjustment costs. Instead of the standard sharp (S, s) bands, firms' adjustment policies take the form of a probability of adjustment (adjustment hazard) that responds smoothly to changes in firms' capacity gap. The model has appealing aggregation properties, and yields nonlinear aggregate time series processes. The passivity of normal times is, occasionally, more than offset by the brisk response to large accumulated shocks. Using within and out-of-sample criteria, we find that the model performs substantially better than the standard linear models of investment for postwar sectoral U.S. manufacturing equipment and structures investment data.

Download or read book Explaining Investment Dynamics in U S Manufacturing written by Ricardo J. Caballero and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we derive a model of aggregate investment that builds from the lumpy microeconomic behavior of firms facing stochastic fixed adjustment costs. Instead of the standard (S, s) bands, firms' optimal adjustment policies are probabilistic, with a probability of adjusting (adjustment hazard) that grows smoothly with firms' disequilibria. Depending upon the specification of the distribution of fixed adjustment costs, the adjustment hazards approach encompasses models ranging from the very non-linear (S, s) model to the linear partial adjustment model. Except for the latter extreme, the processes for aggregate investment obtained from adding up the actions of firms subject to aggregate and idiosyncratic shocks, is highly non-linear. Estimating the aggregate model by maximum likelihood, we find clear evidence supporting non-linear models over linear ones for postwar sectoral U.S. manufacturing equipment and structures investment. For a given sequence of aggregate shocks, the nonlinear model estimated generates brisker expansions and - to a lesser extent - sharper contractions than its linear counterpart. These features fit well the observed positive skewness and large kurtosis of U.S. manufacturing sectoral investment/capital ratios.

Book excerpt: The 90s have witnessed a revival in economists' interest and hope of explaining" aggregate and microeconomic investment behavior. New theories, better econometric" procedures, and more detailed panel data sets are behind this movement. Much of the progress" has occurred at the level of microeconomic theories and evidence; however aggregation and general equilibrium aspects of the investment problem also has been significant." The concept of sunk costs is at the center of modern theories. The implications of these costs for" investment go well beyond the neoclassical response to the irreversible-technological friction" they represent, for they can also lead to first order inefficiencies when interacting with" informational and contractual problems

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I. The Topic and the structure of the Proceedings The papers in this book are the proceedings of a conference held at the Economics Department of the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in March 1985 in New York for which financial support was provided by .the West German Consulate. The topic of the conference was "Competition, Instability, and Nonlinear Cycles." A number of mathematical economists from Italy, West Germany, France, Japan, and the u.s. were invited as participants in this meeting. The conference was preceded by two other conferences in which several of the invited scholars had taken part. One, on "la gravitation des prix," took place in Nanterre, France,in March 1984. The other was held at the New School for Social Research in April 1984 on "Price of Production in Joint Production systems." Both conference were concerned with classical prices of production systems and their revival in the form developed by Sraffa and Pasinetti (1977). In these conferences, considerable interest arose in more properly modeling the dynamics of prices of production systems in a multi sectoral framework by utilizing modern mathematical tools of dynamical systems. Such a discussion on the dynamics of the classical process of competition and the stability of classical production prices was originally initiated by several papers by Nikaido (1977, 1983, 1984) and further pursued by several scholars (see Steedman, 1983; Boggio, 1980; Kuroki, 1983; Dumenil/Levy, 1983; Krause, 1983, 1984; Hosoda, 1985; Filippini, 1985).

Download or read book Nonlinear Systems written by Bo Yang and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mathematics and science, a nonlinear system is a system in which the change of the output is not proportional to the change of input. Nonlinear control systems, which are among the new technologies most widely used in many fields such as economic management, industrial production, technology research and development, ecological prevention and control, are at the core of worldwide automation control technology. In contrast to linear control systems, the nonlinear control system has the characteristics of a data model: stability, zero-input system response, self-excited oscillation or limit cycle, and a more complex structure, increasing the difficulty of its theoretical analysis and technical development. Nonlinear systems are common phenomena in real life and as such cannot be ignored. Analysis and research of nonlinear systems are therefore important, and researchers need to clarify their characteristics, explore scientific and effective application measures, and finally enhance their control quality. This book comprehensively investigates the main principles, core mechanisms, typical problems, and relevant solutions involved in nonlinear systems. In general, this book aims to provide advanced research on nonlinear systems and control schemes for researchers and engineers working in related fields, and thus promote future study in this research area.

Book excerpt: International finance is the branch of economics that studies the dynamics of exchange rates, foreign investment, and how these affect international trade. Financial services is a term used to refer to the services provided by the finance industry. Financial services is also the term used to describe organisations that deal with the management of money and includes merchant banks, credit card companies, consumer finance companies, government sponsored enterprises, and stock brokerages. Financial services is the largest industry (or industry category) in the world, in terms of earnings. This book presents important analyses in these interaction fields.
Download or read book Adjustment Costs Irreversibility and Investment Patterns in African Manufacturing written by Mr.Arne Bigsten and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines dynamic patterns of investment in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe, assessing the consistency of those patterns with different adjustment cost structures. Using survey data on manufactured firms, we document the importance of zero investment episodes and lumpy investment. The proportion of firms experiencing large investment spikes is significant in explaining aggregate manufacturing investment. Taken together, evidence from descriptive statistics, average investment regressions modeling the response to capital imbalance, and transition data analysis indicate that irreversibility is an important factor considered by firms when making investment plans. The picture is not unanimous however, and some explanations for the mixed results are proposed.

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics in Equilibrium Models written by John Stachurski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal growth theory studies the problem of efficient resource allocation over time, a fundamental concern of economic research. Since the 1970s, the techniques of nonlinear dynamical systems have become a vital tool in optimal growth theory, illuminating dynamics and demonstrating the possibility of endogenous economic fluctuations. Kazuo Nishimura's seminal contributions on business cycles, chaotic equilibria and indeterminacy have been central to this development, transforming our understanding of economic growth, cycles, and the relationship between them. The subjects of Kazuo's analysis remain of fundamental importance to modern economic theory. This book collects his major contributions in a single volume. Kazuo Nishimura has been recognized for his contributions to economic theory on many occasions, being elected fellow of the Econometric Society and serving as an editor of several major journals. Chapter “Introduction” is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
